You're correct on that one, my dear Starsky. Studies do show that mixed breeds tend to have less medical and behavioral problems.

It's still a matter of perspective. Mixed breeds generally do not because they are not, by nature, inbred from only a few select lines. But one parent may indeed be seriously overbred. And some very ethical breeders often outcross to save their lines from genetic issues that crop up. ANY dog, mixed or not, can have hip or OHA problems (etc.).

If you do get a dog at A shelter make sure it's healty first...Our puppy we got from there turned out to have "Heart murmur"...It's really sad that he might not lose it when he get's older. So, he won't live as long as a normal dog will.

Yes, adopt a dog from a reliable shelter that gives health checks to their dogs before they go home.

Look people...while the show and conformation hobbies really do turn me off (because of the "clubb" and conceited nature of the people involved in most cases), and while it is entirely possible for certain breeders to over-breed their dogs and bog them down in poor genetics and disease issues, there ARE many fine things to purebreeds.

What is this? Some sort of anti-purebred conspiracy? Any of you who posted in the "Top Ten Favorite Dogs" topic, who also posted here saying that mixed breeds are better, are starting to appear rather hypocritical from where I'm sitting...

I hear that mixed breeds are easier to handle and aren't prone to as many diseases therefore live a longer life than purebreds?

Exactly!! I should be going soon to the North Shore Animal Leauge. Any one been their before? My aunt got a pure bred Golden Retriever from their. With parents that was show dogs xD I have goldens no offense. But I'm mostly looking for personailty too. Not too stubborn, not too little feiceness, etc.... Mostly I love Dobermans (couldn't gues that one?) Austrailian Cattle Dogs, etc.. I want a mid-sized dog. Also must have high to mid energy. We'll see.

Get a doberman! They make great guard dogs, and I love them too. XP

I have three pures and one mix. I think all dogs are great...but not every dog is for every job. For example, i wouldn't enter St. Jimmy in an agility class (he'd knock everything down.) Some dogs just aren't meant for certain jobs. You all get me, right?

I never said anything was wrong with purebreds, it's just that more people would rather have a purebred then a mutt. I wouldn't mind having a purebred, but they are expensive and they usually get adopted right away, not that many people adopt mutts, because they are 'dirty' and 'ugly' [I do NOT agree with that.] If you are looking for a dog with a certain attitude, then a purebred is the thing for you, because you know how there personality will be when their older, with a mutt, you never know.

I do like both. :? you can like both you know. I own a pure breed and a mutt at the same time. And besides. Not everyone can have the some exact opinion as you. I like both. And it depends as well. because every dog has a defferent personallity, and some SEEM to use more of their instinct then others. judgeing from the dogs I have owned (And I have owned ALOT) The mix breeds seem to use more instinct then pure breeds. But I have seen it the other way around too so. Like I said it actually depends on the dog's personallity really ^^

Hey - it's cool, Lunawings. It's just that, all of a sudden, it seemed like everyone was dissing on purebreds. They're not THAT bad. Sure, there are plenty of unreputable breeders (who sure CLAIM to be reputable...just because of a looooooong list of show awards and years in the "hobby", as they call it) who do harm to their breed. But that doesn't mean that ALL purebreds are as bad as some people here are making them out to be, or that they're worse than having mixed breeds.

Sure...mixed breeds can be a lot of fun. And some are quite intelligent, attractive, and healthy. Everyone should get what they want. But the kind of information being posted here, so generally, is doing no good, and is not entirely accurate.
