Apperantly some of these wolves don't just kill for food, they kill for "fun". People have found 300 sheep, I think 100 cows, a bunch of elk, two ladies and I think a man and probably more with they're necks ripped open. Cows can cost over $1,000, and the wolves are just killing them. So don't just go feeling sorry for a bunch of wolves being killed, because they are killers. They are dangerous. Most or all wolves aren't a Balto, gentle and kind I still like wolves, primarily for they're looks, but they will kill slmost anyone in sight. Be careful.
Actually I disagree with almost everything you have said. To make your Topic a fact. Wolves are what we call carnivores and pretty sure if you were a wold and you had pups and they were starving you were starving there you see a farm animal. Obviously you would go kill and fill your self up. You can't give random un-true facts. But whatever, Wolves are territorial That territory can only support so many wolves.Limiting factors also keep wolf packs from expanding too significantly. Besides the wolves' territorial nature, food supply limits pack expansion. A pack's territory only provides forage for a certain amount of wolves."Somebody's not getting enough to eat or there's not enough room,"Wolf prey They're wildlife terrorists."They'll attack humans."Wolves do surplus kill,""But it only occurs in unusual situations."Wolves will conduct surplus kills when livestock or ungulates are bunched up en mass. Bands of sheep trigger an innate chase response in wolves, Wolves can kill sheep with ease, leading the wolves to kill more than they can eat at times.Wolves often put themselves at risk when they kill for food, Wolves can be injured or killed when trying to take down elk, bison or cattle."It's not like wolves are out there just cruising around killing for fun,It's inherently dangerous. For the record, Holyan said, wolves do not view humans as a food source. In fact, Holyan said, he has crawled into a den of wolf pups only to have the pups' mother run away. When Holyan has monitored wolf packs, the animals have never threatened him. They know you're there, but it just doesn't seem to be a big deal to them,They're just like people.

Quote: I've seen where wolves are number one on Animal Planet's The Most Extreme.
It was an urban legend episode of the Most Extreme. Wolves were #1 because they were the most misjudged animals in the world.
But back on topic, I don't think wolves kill just for fun. Every animal will have some reason other than pleasure to kill another creature, even if it's for mates, territory, food, or something.
And good job with the sources, Deimos. I like that, this "evidence" thing.

Wolves most certainly are not growing in population. If anything, they are decreasing.
Point #1: Exactly! Wolves are calculating, intelligent, and tactical creatures! When the National Geographic Channel described a pack of wolves fighting a bisen, they described it as "strength (the bisen) vs. strategy (the wolves)" Besides, as intelligent as they are, I don't think they have the mental complexity to kill for fun, really...
Point #2:(Excuse my language in advance) Of course they aren't! I read that in Alaska, they are voting on whether or not to f****** shoot at the wolves from the air! Jesus, as if they aren't becoming less and less common fast enough... Besides, the wolf population only seems too big because our houses take up too much space, and a vast majority of them require natural land to be cleared out! AND that the human population is getting to past 6 billion...

Swords, you just contradicted yourself. You say wolves are intelligent, then you say they have not the mental complexity to "have fun" with what they kill. If they are as intelligent and tactical as you say they are, then they definatly can enjoy ripping something to shreds.

Intelligence and mental complexity are two different things. They are smart in coming up with strategies, and picking out the weakest in the herd and all that, but it's not in their evolved nature to kill for fun. In all of their history, they have killed things, and eaten them because they had to! Why? Because only a small percentage of all wolf hunts are successful! Therefore, it logically wouldn't be in their genetics to have the mentality of killing for fun.

Wow, is this really what you believe? Some say that they don't kill for fun and they are going by their instincts. I'm not saying all, but some. What if you or one of your family members was attacked by a wolf for no reason? How would you feel toward them? No offence, but you really have no idea.

And do you really have a idea? I think not no offence your not stating facts your giving basic thoughts of anti-wolf lovers.

Sigh. It seems like saying bad things about wolves has become a trend by this point. First there was the whole "wolves are annoying" deal, and now this.

Okay, i just want to say something about the first part of that statement. What i think Snowpaws ment was that the population of wolves were growing in Montana. Not the overall population. I dunno though. I havn't seen anything about rabid wolves reproducing rapidly anywhere.
I would also like to say something else. If a kid came to this topic, i don't think this would make much sense to him/her. Lots of big words are being used here.
Anyway, everything i could point out about wolves has already been posted by the Duo, Seppala and Deimos. So i'll just leave this post at that.

You still have yet to answer Mr. Paw's question, Snowpaws. What personal experience do YOU have with it?
And how can you ask people hypothetical questions about how they'd feel if one of their family members were attacked by a wolf? PFF! It probably would NEVER happen! And if it did, NO ONE would be able to answer that question! But you might be just as surprised to see someone not express a new hatred wolves (or the particular wolf) as it just might be that they'd become an avowed hater of wolves (or the particular wolf).
Asking hypothetical questions, especially ones which deal in such absolutes, is plain stupid.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Wolves certainly do NOT kill for fun, they are portrayed that way in fairytales. Yet wolves "play" with smaller prey, like chipmunks and fish (they DO fish aswell), before they eat it...I don't know why though. It's actually hard for them to catch food, especially in winter.
AND, they do select their prey. I'm quoting something I found on the internet now:
"Begin with a classic case the took place in Wood Buffalo National Park, Alberta, Canada, in 1951. Two buffalo bulls (males) and two cows (female buffalo) are lying in the grass. Three of them are in good health; one cow is lame (in bad health). The wolves approach and withdraw a number of times...At each approach, the lame cow becomes agitated and begins to look around. The three other buffalo ignore the wolves. When one wolf comes within 25 feet, the lame cow gets up on shaky legs to face it alone. It seems clear that prey selection is something both animals play a role it."

You know what? I haven't had any personal experience with it, but my relatives and their friends have had some experience with it. You just need to realize the truth here. They kill for fun. I am not saying ALL, but some. You don't live up here to know the truth. I still like wolves to a point. Don't think I hate Balto and wolves now.

Mkay, I'm a 6th grader that's 11, going on 12 on December 29th, and I understand this. Anyways, to the topic.
Wolves don't kill for fun, just like everyone says, and yes, I think I do know, because I live in Idaho, just not in the place where they were realesed. They are hunting cattle because if you were a wolf in a hunting group, which would you choose? A whole heard of elk that have horns and hoofs that could crush your skull? Or dimwitted cattle? And think we all know what they would choose. And they don't know that you have to buy cows, all they know is they are easy prey to feed a hungry pack.
