Dusty shook her head. "No, I didn't smell it at all, I saw the thing, sure, but I mean afterwards, it just vanished," she explained, thinking. "That was... strange..." she admitted, giving a confused look. It honestly confused her like nothing else. "You'd think with my nose literally in it's quills, I'd have smelt something, wouldn't you?" she asked, rubbing her head with her paw.
"I'm back!" called Sable, putting a some herbs down and beginning to tear the raccoon open and prepare it. "Um... If you're squimish, you may want to look away," she said, knowing tearing open prey was messy.
"We'll just look at each other and the stars," replied Dusty quickly, not looking at the raccoon. "Speaking of stuff we don't understand, what about up there?" she asked, looking up at the sky. "All those stars and everything... I know it sounds silly, but just think about how big it is out there, what could be out there."

Kodi listened to Dusty, her observations competing for his ears against the ripping and tearing of the carcass behind him. He hated that sound. It was such a brutal and violent sound. To think if he had actually run away when Fang had arrived in town… There was no way in all of Alaska that Kodi could do that to an animal. Maybe his father’s values of non-violent resolution had intertwined itself with Kodi’s survival instinct. Then again, desperation can bring out the most unexpected traits in someone. Kodi never would have guessed that Dusty could carry herself in such a manner until he saw it himself in that alleyway. Speaking of his father…
“It's not silly to wonder about things like that. Explaining the inexplicable, I think we naturally want to know why things are the way they are. But the one dog I would ask about that is… Dad. He’s been closer than any of us up there when he was flying with Duke.” He had never thought to ask Balto what it was like up there, and he wasn’t sure why he didn’t. Kodi would have to remember, once he and his father were on speaking terms again.
“I don’t know if you saw it or not Dusty, but he was there.” Kodi told her. “Dad was there when we left this morning. I think he was trying to hide from me, but he still wanted to see me off. Why do you think that is? The way he handled himself, I should have been hiding from him.”
The tearing of flesh had stopped. Perhaps Sable was just applying the herbs now? Kodi dared not look up, in case he was wrong and accidentally witnessed a most unpleasant disassembly of the raccoon.

Dusty cringed a little at the song of tearing meat and the like, like Kodi she wasn't exactly used to the sound of it, nor was it at all pleasent, but she knew Sable was merely preparing the meat. She listened to Kodi and gave a smile. "So you think your dad felt a bit guilty and came out to see you?" she asked, keeping her tone down so Sable didn't hear. "I wouldn't doubt it, Kodi, your dad loves you. I think he just got a good bit worked up and finally snapped. It happens to all of us after all."
Dusty then decided to change the topic to Kodi's other one. "I wonder what it's like flying up there like that, it's so unreal," she replied, thinking it out. The idea of flying high over the ground, looking down on everything. "It makes me wonder what it's like to be a bird and know what stuff like that feels like. Though I guess the birds beat humans by a good bit to getting to fly..." she continued, looking up at the sky. "I wonder if humans or anyone else will ever get beyond that and see the stars up close. I'd sure love to see that."
Sable looked over, cleaning blood off herself as she mixed the herbs into the meat. She drained the kill too, so the domesticated dogs wouldn't have to deal with that. "It might sound silly, but I've heard some humans saying they think the gods and deities of some ancient cultures are visitors from another world. I don't know which sounds more out there myself."

Kodi kept quiet as he listened to the two. The truth was, Kodi didn’t much like the thought of flying. He could see the appeal to it, of course. Nothing but the clouds imposing as obstacles made for faster travel than trudging through snow and ice, and on the rare warmer days, strong breeze that would feel great caressing his muzzle.
However, the risk associated with it seemed too great. The very first time he had seen a plane in action, it had crashed into the Alaskan wilderness between Nome and White Mountain. Kodi fell from the slick roof of the Nome’s butcher once, part of a so-called “initiation rite” that Kirby had assigned for him involving filching a fresh cut of meat. He regretted agreeing to it, much to his chagrin, before he started, and he regretted it much more exponentially when the icing proved equally more slippery than he thought. Kodi was told by all involved that he was very lucky he didn’t get seriously injured, and how fortunate he was that his mail delivery career didn’t end before barely beginning. The fall was very painful, even more so than the tongue lashing his mother gave him for attempting to steal from a hard-working citizen who was friendly to them (Kodi neglected to mention how Kirby put him up to it, but he suspected his mother knew based on how uncharacteristic it was of him).
What if he fell from a plane? Kodi shuddered at the thought. “You’d have to ask Boris about flying. He doesn’t fly much, but I’m sure he could tell you more than Dad could.” Kodi told Dusty hurriedly. Kodi felt silly that he was deferring all of the answers to Dusty’s questions to people other than himself. If it kept up, their conversation would devolve into a reference list based on expertise and experience that Kodi didn’t possess.
Hearing Dusty and Sable speak of worlds beyond their own, freely travelling among the stars and conste-whats-it’s, (the shapes that Dusty showed him) left Kodi thinking about the whole concept. The more he thought about it, the more absurd it seemed.
“I don’t know about that whole star travel and ancient visitors business. I mean, think about it. If birds can’t fly up that high, how could other animals hope to? If things can’t fly that high, how would visitors get here? That would be one heck of a fall.” Kodi said. He had to admit, a couple of months ago, he would never have imagined seeing a human in the air. Then he met Duke. But, some things were in the realm of possible, and others in the realm of impossible. This one most assuredly was in the domain of the latter.
Kodi discovered that there was a lot he didn’t know. He didn’t know much of human practices involving gods and the like, other than that on Sundays, most of the town would gather at the chapel and talk about it. They would sing too, very beautiful songs. He didn’t understand them, but he appreciated them nonetheless. If the ones humans sang about were ancient visitors from other worlds… there was a lot MORE Kodi didn’t know. His head, already sore from the pounding against the wooden siding of the building in the alley, was starting to twinge again. Maybe it was just better that way.
Thinking about Kirby's prior ultimatum brought the two goofy teammates back into Kodi's consciousness.
"D'you think that that Ralph and Kirby are alright? We've been gone for a while, and I hope they didn't run into those dogs if they went looking for us. They can probably handle themselves, especially Ralph, but still..." he asked uneasily.
Kodi was willing to bet that Sable knew more about the eccentric townsfolk than Dusty did. "What was up with those dogs back in town? The one with a scarred face, whatever his name was, why was he so violent to us? Some of the things he was saying to Dusty, they were- they were..." He tried to think of a word to finish his sentence. He couldn't think of one that described it.

Dusty couldn't help chuckling under her breath at Kodi's naivity once more when he said how hard a fall it must be. "I'd imagine they'd have something like Duke's plane, only a lot more advanced. After all, while I wouldn't say humans are smarter than dogs, they're much better with those machine... things. I'd never be able to make a plane or even consider how it works. Just imagine something with that big of a difference in machines between them and humans."
She then thought about his last statement. "Yeah, that is true..." she remarked. "We'd better head back and try to meet up with them... I'm still worried about those dogs though..."
"Those are feral dogs," said Sable, looking to Kodi. "That scarred one is their leader, don't know or care what the brute's name is," she explained, giving it some thought. "However, I may be able to give you a little something to ward them off if you run into them again," she replied. "But first, we eat," she said, pushing over the prepared raccoon, which she'd ripped appart, drained, and prepared for them with the herbs. "It's hard avoiding those mutts full, let alone on an empty stomach."
Dusty nodded. "Thank you so much, Sable," she said, giving a smile. She took a few bites. "Yum! It's really good!" she exclaimed, the meat was pretty good, she'd tasted raccoon from a hunter before, but this tasted even better. She got some snow from the ground and let it melt in her mouth for water.
"So..." said Sable, looking at the two after taking a few bites herself. "Have you two considered having... You know, little ones at all? Mating season is soon."

The raccoon meat was far superior to what hunters gave the dogs. Kodi could already tell that each treat from them here on in would be an utter disappointment. The herbs, however it was they worked, created a positively luscious flavor that danced on Kodi’s tongue. He wasn’t necessarily partial to the rather rough texture that raccoon meat possessed, but the flavoring made the meat one he WANTED to chew on. That’s why it was such a shame he was only able to have two bits of meat before he started choking.
Kodi’s eyes bulged, to the point where he started to tear up at the corners. He waved his paw dismissively as if to say “I’m fine, keep eating.” despite his loud hacking that showed otherwise. After an especially strong pulsing motion his gag reflex devised, the larger-than-normal slab he had swallowed prematurely at Sable’s question lay on the floor of the cavern.
“Oh no, no, no!” He shook his head violently to answer, not bothering to apologize for the most unappetizing mess he had left in front of the other two while they ate. After he made sure he was clear with his answer, he apologized. “Oh, sorry about that…” He would be willing to bet that the meat would still taste very good, even after being spit out, but he didn’t feel it would be very appropriate in front of the two females in front of him.
“No, no puppies for us.” He said reassuringly. The reassurance was more for himself than anyone else. The question caught him completely off guard. The notion of fathering puppies seemed inconceivable to him, but he couldn’t think of a reason why. It just felt… Kodi didn’t know how he felt.
He tried to gauge Dusty’s reaction, but he couldn’t. Upon reflection, he realized that perhaps his answer had come too quickly and across too strong. More specifically, it was when he mentioned “no puppies for us”. The operative word that stood out was “Us”. He hadn’t talked about it with Dusty, not one iota. He didn’t know how she felt on the subject after all. Until a couple of oxygen-deprived minutes ago, he had completely neglected it as a subject entirely.
In a conscious effort to save face he renegotiated his statement. “I mean… no puppies for us- me- yet… We hadn’t really talked about it…” He looked at Dusty apologetically. Maybe it was time they did.

Dusty was taken offguard big time by the question as well, but luckily avoided choking like Kodi did. Still, it kind of upset her when he said "no pups for us", if they hadn't talked about it, what right did he have to say that? She felt better when he added that in. Still, maybe it was a good idea to talk about it after all...
"I... I'm not sure... I should be going into heat soon after all..." said Dusty, thinking things out. How would Mr. Samson react? Probably alright, he loved the dogs and probably could already tell they were in love. He was an understanding human and she truly did trust him. He probably would understand and accept it, so no problem there.
Balto and Jenna both loved pups to pieces, they wouldn't mind, and her mother would be overjoyed... If she ever found out. "But I don't know if I'm healthy enough to have pups..."
"Come over here and let me look you over, in privite, I can tell. I know medicine, dear, it's my fortay," said Sable, leading Dusty off alone and thoroughly examining her.
Dusty wouldn't lie, having a stranger, even one who had been so nice to her, examine her from nose to tail like a vet was a bit uncomfortable. But still, she'd been kind enough to them she trusted her and Sable was gentle.
Sable lead Dusty back and nodded. "You're very healthy, Dusty, you can have pups and I'm very certain you'd be perfectly alright," she said in a calm, soothing voice.
Dusty gave a sigh of relief. "Well, that answers that... Now comes the hard part, deciding if we should or not..."

Kodi nervously chewed another piece succulent meat, as he had been for the past two minutes. As hungry as he was before, he suddenly lost his appetite. He was only “eating” now to occupy himself, to keep himself busy. Kodi wished to the high heavens that Sable hadn’t asked that question. After all, he kept himself from asking her about pups or mates she might have had. It seemed inappropriate, given how little they knew each other. Maybe Sable had lived out here by herself for so long, she simply forgot.
But maybe the problem wasn’t with Sable. Fathering children was, as his mother and father told a very uncomfortable Kodi years ago, completely natural. He loved Dusty, he really did. If he was going to be with her for the rest of his life, their having puppies was bound to happen eventually. So why did it unnerve him so much?
It didn’t help the matter at all when Dusty mentioned that she was to be going into heat soon. Mr. Simpson had told them to try and stay away from her when she smelled like that, as it “might cause problems”. Kodi didn’t know why, until his parents (Mostly Jenna, Balto looked just as nervous as Kodi did) told him what it meant. He felt bad that Dusty seemed so moody during those times, but at the behest of Mr. Simpson and in the interest of keeping his precious mail team in working order, he and the others avoided her.
Now that he and she were together, he knew he couldn’t avoid her. It dawned on him how very real the unforeseen possibility of parenthood seemed. It made Kodi queasy. Why? The piece of raccoon was now completely decimated, but he still vainly tried to chew on it. He finally, with much difficulty from his uncooperative throat, swallowed it. Now what? What was taking them so long? What was Sable doing? Was Dusty OK? Why was she concerned about her health? Was she sick? Was it something he had done? His paws raced like his mind as he anxiously paced in a circle.
As the tension built, he felt like bolting into a sprint to relieve it. It was at that time when Dusty and Sable returned. He wanted to ask “Is everything alright?” Instead, his tongue tied, he sat silently dreading the answer. Either she was, or she wasn’t. Kodi didn’t know which answer frightened him more.

"Your mate is perfectly healthy," said Sable to Kodi. "If you so choose, she's in perfect condition to have pups," she explained, sincerely. "Your owner must take excellent care of you all."
Dusty nodded. "Thank you, Sable..." she said, then looked to her mate, giving him a nuzzle. She knew that Mr. Samson told them to keep away from her when she's in heat, but that was mainly because they didn't have a backup member to take her place if she were to get pregnent. Which, if Fang did get onboard, would be solved. "Kodi, there's no rush, just because I'll be in heat soon doesn't mean we've got to rush," she replied. "There's plenty of time to think things out..."
"Should I leave the room for this?" asked Sable. "I know this is a privite moment, I probably shouldn't be here for you to talk this out," she replied, finishing her meal and walking out of the room.
"That was considerate of her," said Dusty, waiting to be sure she'd left. "Kodi, I will point something out. Before, Mr. Samson was worried he'd be a dog down, we have no backup dog... But if everything goes right with Fang, we will. But he won't be ready this season, so that gives us plenty of time to think this out... But what do you think first?"

Kodi was surprised by how much Dusty seemed to have thought this out, at least in regards to the mail team losing a valuable member. Kodi hadn’t even thought about the mail team with his indecision. It made sense; Dusty obviously couldn’t run while she was pregnant.
“I-I don’t know, Dusty… I’m not worried about the mail team, not really.” He said. Kodi never thought he’d ever say those words, as he felt like he practically lived to serve no other purpose. Dusty had once mentioned that she “didn’t know how to do anything else”, so this was a large sacrifice on her part. She seemed very open to the prospect anyways.
“I just…” He wanted to tell her that he was frightened of the whole idea. He was the runt of his litter, what was to say he wouldn’t pass on his own natural deficiencies to his offspring? What if he was a terrible father? Questioning the ‘what if’s’ of star flight and ancient cultures seemed a more positive alternative to asking these ones.
Why was he so ill-prepared to tackle the subject, while Dusty seemed like she already had a plan? Was she expecting this to come up? For how long? He remembered when she had referred to Kodi to the scarred dog as “her mate” in the alleyway. Why didn’t Kodi catch that earlier?
“I just…” he repeated. “I just don’t know if I’m ready. You seem like you already know all about having puppies, but I don’t know anything. It’s like you were planning for this.” He said accusingly. Kodi’s voice started to rise. “It’s like you already had Fang set up for the queue when you were gone. Is that the reason you were so eager to help him out? When were you planning on telling me? It’s mighty convenient, isn’t it? What reason would I have to say no?”
He took a deep breath before he finished. “That’s not fair, Dusty.”
That felt good. For a moment, at least. As soon as he finished uttering his last phrase, he immediately felt regret. It was awfully rich of Kodi to accuse Dusty of plotting their future without asking him when he had just told the curious Sable that THEY (as in, both of them) had no plans for pups in their immediate future. What a hypocrite. His tail, wildly erect during his interrogation, now hung low behind him.

Dusty gave a whimper and backed up a bit, looking quite hurt, which she was. "Kodi... How could you think that about me?" she asked, tail between her legs. She could handle being insulted by someone else, but Kodi was supposed to be her mate... She really didn't know how to react to being accused of something by him now that they were together and it really hurt.
"I was just trying to think of a way it could work... I wasn't planning anything..." said Dusty, looking down. "If you don't want to have pups, just say so, but don't accuse me of something I didn't do, that's not right and you know it..." she stated, not looking up at him. What did this hurt so much? Why did being offended by Kodi make her feel rotten and angry?... Because she loved him and it hurt for someone you love to hurt you...

Remorse coursed through Kodi’s brain. What a stupid thing for him to do. He knew Dusty better than that, to make such unfounded accusations about her “motives”. The look on her face was that which he hoped never to see, and never wanted to be the cause of. He wasn’t angry at her; far from it. He felt so much pressure on him… he didn’t want to admit that he was petrified of the prospect of being a father, and he covered it up. Kodi hid behind a veil of anger.
Just like Dad did, he thought.
“No… Dusty. Please, don’t be upset. I think… I think I need to tell you something.”
Kodi cleared his throat, and began to sing.
I think too much on what I say What if you take it the wrong way? When you see me as I am, so unprepared What will you think of me, that I don’t care? That isn’t true, it’s simply that I’m scared.
I worry not about our team Priorities put forth on me When giving life is not, a one way street On both of us it falls, I will agree A mutual responsibility
So just remember that together we will be You and me
Kodi took a deep breath. He didn’t sing very much, but he didn’t quite know how else to express it in a meaningful way. His mother and Dusty herself were both able to portray such trying moments through song, so Kodi decided it might be best if he gave it a try. It certainly beat stuttering endlessly through an apology. He continued.
Unscramble signals in the noise My heightened pitches hide a voice Of a dog who doesn’t know, just what to do For decisions such as this, I’ll stay with you I just need some time to think things through.
So if you’ll listen hear me out I didn’t mean to cast such doubt I’ll use my mouth instead, to find a way Apologize for words, not meant to say And realize ourselves on the same page
So just remember that together we will be You and me You and me
He finished, and let loose a rattling breath. “Dusty… what I’m trying to say is… I’m sorry.” He apologized. “Sometimes, I still feel like a pup myself, with how much I don’t know, how-how inexperienced I am with everything that isn’t about dog sledding.” He admitted. “To be a father… what if I do something wrong? What if our pups don’t like me? What if they look like me? What if they don’t? The whole thing terrifies me, Dusty, it really does.”
“The whole thing seems so sudden.” He continued. “Two days ago, the thought of being with you seemed impossible. Now, we’re together, and already discussing our future. After the things we went through today, can you see why I was maybe just a little stressed?” A little stressed seemed an understatement. “That’s still no excuse for how I acted. Once again, I’m so, so sorry.”
He concluded his confessions. “But, if I were to ever have puppies… I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather have them with.” He nuzzled her softly, apologetically. “Just... I need some time to think about it, alright? Can we think about it together, later?” He asked reproachfully.

Dusty listened to Kodi as he sung, something she'd never heard him do at all. Really, she didn't know he knew HOW to sing... But she knew his mother could, so it did kind of make sense, didn't it?
She listened, and understood. She nuzzled him lightly. "I understand Kodi..."
"I may think hard before I speak I try to stay at the physical peak But there are things I don't know And I'm careful to watch where I go Because I know I'll take others in tow.
I worry about our team, that's true. But I worry even more about you. You're right, it's not a one way street Both our eyes a pup's would meet Both of us would be there to greet.
To decide together, it must be You and me."
Dusty inhaled again, finding her voice a good compliment for Kodi's, she'd never dreamed that a duet would break out between the two of them, let alone on such a strange topic... But some things were easier to sing about than speak. Dusty didn't really know how they both knew the words to a song no one had written out, one they shouldn't know at all. It was just natural, she didn't question it really, it was just a part of the world.
"This is something we've got to talk out To overcome any such doubt. If one parent doesn't want a child true The child will suffer for it too So I will not rush you
I know you didn't mean the things you said You just let stress mess with your head So I forgive you, Kodi, I really do You have a good heart, I know it beats true And that is why I know I love you.
We'll decide this out together, that's how it must be. You and me You and me..."
Dusty looked at him. "I'm not so sure right now if I want to have pups, I was just trying to get all the facts straight," she explained, looking him in the eyes. "I'm scared about it too, there's so many things that worry me, and not just about the child, but being pregnent with it. I've heard old dogs say it'll really hurt, that scares me, the possibility the pups would be born dead... I've heard some females in town say that too, and that makes my blood run cold..."
"But at the same time, I just know those are fears everyone faces, and that no matter when we'd have pups, it'd be there, but that doesn't mean I should give up on it just because that. Being afraid means we're taking it seriously, and that's a good thing..." she said, smiling to him. "So we're both stressed, Kodi... But if I ever have pups, I can't think of a better father..." she said, nuzzling him back.
"... Should we start back to town or talk about this more here and now?" asked Dusty. "Sable gave us privacy, Ralph and Kirby might not..."

Kodi was put off slightly listening to Dusty’s own admissions of worry. It made him feel a little more at ease, knowing he wasn’t alone in his misgivings. Obviously, he didn’t want Dusty to be hurt. He had never thought to ask his mother about the actual birthing process. Having “the talk” was awkward enough, and he vowed never to bring the subject up again if he could help it. Even more ghastly, he thought, was the possibility of a stillborn child. He couldn’t begin to imagine the horrors of seeing a motionless pup, dead before it had been given the chance to fight for it’s new life. He couldn’t even fathom…
Kodi deliberated about continuing with the conversation here, or heading back into town. He opened his mouth to speak, but as soon as he did, Dusty was met with a yawn from his gaping maw.
“Well, that kind of explains that, doesn’t it?” He joked. “I’m really tired.” He told her ashamedly. He felt bad that their first date, though it started later and under much different circumstances than he had envisioned, he was ready to fall asleep so soon. Kodi didn’t know about how late it was in the evening, but he was sure that Ralph and Kirby were already asleep.
“I think a good night’s sleep will be good for both of us, you know? We can mull things over, and talk about it tomorrow once we get back safe and sound in Nome.” He suggested. “Plus, we’ve imposed on Sable enough, I think. She’s healed us, fed us, let us talk in private… She’s really been great. I just hope she won’t mind leading us back to White Mountain. I’m not sure about you, but I wasn’t really paying attention to where we going when she brought us here.” Memorizing routes seemed a lot easier when he had a harness on him, it seemed.

Dusty nodded, giving a yawn of her own. She was phyisically and mentally worn out too, it'd been a rough day. She'd nearly died, twice, and she had a signifigant talk with Kodi about their future. "I agree, let's head back," she said, getting up and stretching, then giving Kodi a nuzzle. "I love you, Kodi," she said, leading the way to the main room, where Sable was working on something. "Sable, thanks for the help, but we'd better be getting back to our team if you don't mind."
"It's fine, I knew you'd need to leave, you've got your own lives to get back to," replied Sable, bringing up a pair of ropes with a herb on them, putting one around each of their necks. "These aren't very strong, but they'll mask your scent and make it difficult for someone to track you," she explained, smiling. "Protect you a bit."
Dusty nodded. "Thanks..." she said, though the herb smelled kind of foul, but not THAT bad, still, if it'd mask their scent, that was the important part. "Do you mind leading us back to White Mountain?"
Sable shook her head. "No, I'd be happy too," she replied, giving a smile. "Would it be possible for me to meet your team? I don't go into town often, if I am, I'd like to meet some friendly faces."
