I saw this when it came out a few weeks ago. I'm considering seeing it again. I've had a lot of time to think about it and form an opinion since I saw it the first time, and here it is.
This is all my opinion. Ultimately, I think this is a pretty bad movie. A lot of it has been covered in this thread already, but to recap - really bad/strange animation and 3D models for the wolves especially, a plot that has been done many times before, a goose ripped straight out of Balto, cheesy dialogue and a propensity for toilet humor, bad jokes, log riding, references to human things that have nothing to do with wolves.
In short, this is a movie about two wolves that fall in love, yet the movie barely even acknowledges it.
This movie was obnoxiously bad in a lot of ways, but in others it was more frustrating than obnoxious. I wanted it to be more like Robin Hood or Balto. Balto isn't even about the love story, yet they did a better job of it than this movie did. Why didn't they focus more on Kate and Humphrey's relationship? Isn't that what this movie is ultimately about?
I wanted it to be better. I really did. There were parts in this movie, little tiny glimpses of what it could have been, that made the rest of it seem really banal. For example, there was a scene in which Humphrey and Kate were going back to their home in Jasper Park via train. They were in a boxcar, and Kate was asleep in the back. When the goose shows up to wake him up and tell him they're back home, there is a really nice little section where Humphrey looks over at Kate sleeping, notices how beautiful she looks like that, and then goes to wake her by nuzzling her and quietly asking her to wake up.
It's one of the few times in the movie that it actually rises above its own mediocrity, and you get to see some real tenderness. If they had put that kind of effort into the rest of the movie, the whole thing could have been a lot better. But they spent so much time focusing on the goose, and riding in logs, and the war brewing between the two wolf packs that everything it could have been was lost, and what was left was relegated to only a few moments in the film.
It was disappointing, and frustrating. And in a general sense, it was mediocre and shallow. And yet I still want to see it again just for those few parts where you actually get to see some emotion, something that isn't a butt joke or riding in a log, or a wisecracking goose.
I mean it reminds of me the ridiculousness of the zany circus music scene in Balto 3 as they're being swept downriver. That music right there was so blatantly inappropriate for that scene that it was almost a joke. And that's what most of Alpha and Omega felt like to me. It had potential that was completely wasted, despite the weak attempts at bringing it forth.
It's really just sad. And you know what the worst part is? Because this movie performed so poorly, which is specifically because it's not a good movie, the next time somebody approaches a studio head with an animated movie about wolves, no matter how good it is, all the studios will have to do is point to Alpha and Omega and say "nobody likes wolf movies."
If they had let some of us here at Balto Source write the screenplay for that movie, it would have been a lot better.

So you're saying that a bad movie is one that doesn't focus on romance? That's pretty biased.

They were saying that the movie was promising to be a romance film, but didn't even give what it promised.

I'm saying it's called "Alpha and Omega", and the movie is about two wolves that fall in love. That's the entire premise of the movie. The problem is that the movie doesn't focus on that very much at all, and in fact only really brings it up in a couple places. It's like if you wrote a story called "Balto goes to the store," and then wrote a story about how Boris is flying south for the winter, with a tertiary mention of Balto actually going to a store at some point. And that's only one of the problems with Alpha and Omega. As I pointed out, it has more problems than that.

The trailers do that, and that does indeed suck when a trailer tells you one thing and you get another xDDD But my understanding is that there were two relationships going on between alphas and omegas. (And romance is something that should only be a subplot anyway.) So isn't that kind of okay? As ridiculous as it is to pay as much attention to the secondary characters as the main ones (if not more).

But in this case the title is actually descriptive of the plot. The movie is about the alpha and the omega, and the taboos associated with the two of them being together. That is literally what the entire movie revolves around. They even go so far in the beginning as to point out that Kate and Humphrey have been friends since they were cubs, and that Humphrey has always had a crush on Kate. The conflict in the movie comes from Kate having to do her Alpha duty and marry Garth, instead of being with Humphrey.
The framework of the entire movie is based on Kate and Humphrey's relationship. But then they paid relatively little attention to that part of it and spent more time on log rides, crazy hijinx getting back to Canada, getting chased by bears, the war between the two packs, the goose, etc. And because of all that, the movie has this sort of wandering, unfocused feel to it.
Compare that to Balto, which is NOT about his relationship with Jenna, yet does a much better job with (and spends more time on) their relationship - and the payoff is tangible at the end of the movie, because you care about what happens to them.
Alpha and Omega is just a mess, plot-wise. It doesn't nail the emotional high points it needs to hit in order to maintain interest, and a lot of that is because it doesn't give the characters enough attention. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, it's just... flat. It misses out on a lot of good opportunities for character development, and the plot is all over the place. I really wish they had done a better job with it.

Well, I watched it. Opinion? - Meh.
The kind of movie you'd stick on at a birthday party for some kids. Though something like Balto, TLK etc. is still a better choice, A&O would be easier to grab from a movie rental store I imagine.
I liked: The music, the backgrounds and the musical aspect of the howling (what? That intrigues me xD Ever since I saw it in Zelda: Twilight Princess. ) plus I agree with Xaqtly about the romantic aspects of it. The odd scene between Humphrey & Kate or Lily & Garth were really sweet and cute but it was over-shadowed by the stupid parts. (And those BUTT JOKES uuurrrrghhhhghgh Dx ).
I disliked: The character designs (wolves with mullets. urgh.), the animation; I swear every animal had rubber jaws, all the unneccessary (sp? =_=) and stupid jokes; it really grinds after the first one or two and especially when they throw one in that ruins an otherwise cute or (almost) tense moment.
Out of 10; 4.

Ecliptica wrote: I really liked this movie, kind of a mild animated romantic comedy but non the less I enjoyed it^^ they need more wolf related movies, im tired of seeing stupid rodent movies, frogs and stupid things like that, so this was a nice change, altho some charcter voice acting was crap. What's wrong with rodents and frogs?? I find them more interesting than wolves
