These bands succeeded because they took portions of the rap genre and incorporated them into their vocals instead of just rapping over guitars. In other words: No soup for you!

RHCP is not rap and certainly not Metal, they are Funk/alternative.....its important to not mix them up ...Funk...rap... there is a certain difference between the two. I've heard some Chili Peppers songs that could be considered rap-rock, but yes they are mostly funk-rock.
