"Their parents went out to do something I didn't understand." said Balto. "Grown up are hard to understand." he said. "So I'm watching them, I don't mind, Flash has always been my friend and I love his kittens." he said. "Jenna, I'm glad to have another friend that's a dog, I know I've got Flash, Boris, and those two weird polor bears we met yesterday." he said. "But none of them really understand being a dog you know? Heck its a wonder I do, I was raised by a goose, its a wonder I don't honk instead of bark!"

Jenna sat and listened. She could feel the pain and sorrow. She just didn't understand. No matter how much she wanted to, she just didn't understand. "Dixie told me about Flash. She said that he had a cat raise him but something happened to her. I guess he could feel the same way, but differently."

Balto nodded. "He does understand my pain but I meant understanding what its like to be a dog." he said. "We're dogs, he's a cat." he said. "He's a good friend but he's not a dog." he said. "You're the first friend I've had that's a dog and I'm happy."

Jenna blushed under her fur. "I guess he doesn't understand." She said. And neither do I She thought to herself.
Rico got up and started to play tag with Nica. "Catch me if you can Squirt!" He yeld to his younger sister.
Nica stood up and raced after him. She pounced on him and pinned him down. "Pinned ya!" She mewed.

"Guys, stay inside the boat alright? And don't get out of my sight." said Balto to the kits. He looked to Jenna. "Anyway, I'm just saying your the first dog who looks at what's in my heart instead of what I look like." he said. "And for that I'm very grateful." he said.

Balto was suprised but let her nuzzle him. "I will tell you something that I've never told anyone." he said. "I was seprated from my parents when I was a few months old." he said. "I don't remember what happened but I heard a load sound like the ones before the races and I came out and..." Balto burst into tears from the memories, he didn't have to finish to tell the story.

Jenna's heart felt ache as she felt his tears roll. She nuzzled his cheeks and licked his maw. "Its ok" She said, her heart felling like all the happyness was flooded away.
Rico raced outside and started to run out into and open field.
Nica stopped at the opening and yowled "Rico! No, Uncle Balto said we have to stay in here!" She raced outside in search of her brother.

Balto smiled. "Thank you." he said. "It feels good to have someone care for me." he said. He saw the kits were gone. "Oh no, the kits are gone!" he said. "I've got to find them." he said. "You can help me if you want me to." he said. He sniffed around and caught their scent. He ran and caught up with them. "What did I tell you guys?" he asked sternly.

Jenna's ears perked as she heard her name come from Rosy. "Sorry Balto, but I have to go home now!" Jenna called as she started to run. "Good bye Balto! See ya tomarrow Buddy!" She raced away. She hoped by saying "buddy" he would feel a lot better.
"Sorry Uncle Balto" Nica satrted "Iwent to find Rico after he ran off!"
Rico hid behind his sister. He hated getting in trouble.

"Well that wasn't a good thing to do, who knows what you could've run into." said Balto. As if to show his point a skunk walked out of the trees and looked around. Balto froze and held his breath, he wasn't sure if the kits knew what a skunk was.

Rico looke din the direction of the skunk. He froze. Obviously HE knew what a skunk was and could do.
"Hey another cat!" Nica mewed. She raced after it. Only to be sprayed the second it saw her. "EWWW. YUCK!" She yowled.

Balto put his paw over his nose as the skunk walked off, leaving the reeking Nica. "Oh Nica, that wasn't a cat, it was a skunk." he said. He walked up to her, paw still on his nose. "Its an animal that when frightened sprays stinky stuff from its rear end and its sticky to, it doesn't come off for a long time." he said, coughing, eyes watering. He fell on his stomach so he could put both paws on his nose.

By the time Nica was sprayed, Rico was laughing his head off. "Nica! You should have seen your face when the smell hit!" He mewed between laughs
"Mom and Dad should be home soon, lets get back." Nica said as she stormed toward the boat.
