In the Name of Aniu (Sequel to Balto: Alternate Ending)

Tired of waiting for Nexus to answer, Balto headed off into the woods in the direction that Keso and his wolves had departed earlier, his paws kicking up puffs of snow as he walked briskly away.

(Meh, sorry about that, this week's been hectic. I got to go the Rascal Flatts concert here though! XD)

Nexus whirled around as he was spoken to and simply shrugged as Balto began to question him and then took a few steps back as the large half-wolf advanced on him. "I had no paw in this event, I swear! I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I had committed such a sick and vile act! I just thought you might have an idea of who had done it." He lowered his eyes and a small whimper would come from his throat. He really didn't like that Keso had committed the act at all, and half hoped that Balto and the rest would be able to catch Keso and defeat him in some way, then he wouldn't have to spy on them or be Keso's little eye and ear in Nome anymore. He would finally be free after all the years of servitude to him.

Nexus glanced up as Balto departed, going in the path that Keso had gone down, the one that led to the sight of the massacre. He bit his lip and then said in a low tone, "I'm sorry to have burdened you with this. It wasn't my place. I'll just go back to town now..." He turned back the way he had been going a few minutes before and then jogged briskly off the trail, not intending to anger the other any further than he was now.

Balto couldn't believe it. There had to be at least a hundred wolves lying before him, some of them had been his friends, and all of them were gone from this world. Their bodies were entagled in each other, legs, paws, heads, bodies, all contorted into indescribably groteque positions, lying in a river of blood. A mass grave. As he walked among the bodies, many times he felt as though naseau would overtake him. The stench of death was everywhere.

Suddenly, another scent caught his attention. In disbelief, he scented the air again. His eyes narrowed, and his face became a mask of hate and anger.
"Keso."

"Keso? Who's Keso?" Star asked, His wagging tail coming to a stop. "Balto..." He raised his nose and sniffed also. "Doesn't smell like anyone I would want to mess with," he muttered.

"Well if I die at least I die for a good cause. I'm not going to go out there and get mysef killed to save myself. It'll be to save another dog," he said proudly. He was getting older, it seemed, every day, anyway, so he wasn't having second thoughts about death anymore.

Balto had heard Star, but he didn't really want to answer.
"I'll kill him. I'll kill him if it's the last thing I do. Some of these poor souls were my friends!" He quickly turned around and said to Star.
"Come on, we need to get Jenna back to Nome." After a short pause, he added, "After that, there's a wolf out there who deserves to rot in the deepest pits of H**l. I'm just going to make sure he keeps that appointment."

"Yeah," Star said. "And then I'll stay in Nome." He really, really didn't want to be out here right now, with that wolf, Keso, hanging around.

Kalgorn felt concerned for balto. "You want any help with Keso?" Kalgorn asked. His teeth bared.

"I'd help fight him but... well... you know..." Star laughed. He sat down, waiting for Balto to make a move. "So then... What happened back there?"

Balto seemed to shake with anger as he spoke.
"There's over a hundred wolves out there in that clearing, and they're all dead. It's Keso's doing, I'm sure of it." He closed his eyes, and the shaking stopped. Opening them again, he said,
"Come on, I'm getting Jenna back to Nome." With that, he set off toward Nome with Jenna on his back.
