The thing about music that annoys me the most is people who call themselves punks and metalheads, but only listen to the generic, no-talent garbage shown to them on Mtv (Linkin Park, Disturbed, Green Day)
Once you listen to each of or a number of the following bands, not only will you be able to call yourself what you claim to be, but will see commercial rock for the trash that it is.
Pantera (heavy metal)
Iron Maiden (power metal/speed metal)
Metallica (heavy metal)
Rage Against the Machine (hard rock, rap-metal [the only band that did it right], punk-metal)
Alice in Chains (hard rock, grunge)
Tool (progressive metal, industrial metal)
Led Zeppelin (hard rock)
Guns n' Roses (hard rock, hair metal)
early nineties Red Hot Chilli Peppers (funk-rock)
Jimi Hendrix Experience (funky guitar rock)
Sample these artists on iTunes (or whatever you have). If you like them, check out a song or two and see if they hold up. Even if it's not your taste, it'll be evident how much more talent they have than the talentless pop bands in the current top 40.
