^ Ah, fascinating! Lawl And you're quite welcome. JerseyCaptain wrote: Incidentally, did you know that the actual history behind the Jamestown settlement (which recently celebrated its 400th anniversary) indicates that the "romance" between Pocahontas and Captain Smith (the real individuals) was probably an utterly fictional legend? Historians have maintained that the real Pocahontas (who went by other names as well) was much younger than John Smith - little more than a child, and that it's even possible that the story of her saving him from her father's decree that he should die is apocryphal. That love story, most likely, was the work of romanticists ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocahontas#Popular_legend). So it goes... JerseyCaptain wrote: You know what, Xaqtly? I'm going to concede the point to you if that sets your mind at ease, as you are clearly determined to hold to it regardless of anyone else offering counterpoint. I know, it's almost as if that's what you do every time anybody has a differing opinion from yours. You don't have to concede anything. I'm not telling you you're wrong, I'm offering my opinion, based on what I've observed in the movie and basic common sense. You don't have to agree with it. You are free to offer counter points if you want, and I am free to disagree with you. That's how this works. JerseyCaptain wrote: I don't see the item at hand as you do, buuuuuut I know from experience how pointless it is to continue.
I tried to extract myself from this point-counterpoint-counter-counterpoint once already (even though I want to remain involved in the topic), but hey - stick to your guns, ol' bean. lol Is it really that hard to simply say you don't agree and leave it at that? You make it sound like there's something wrong with not agreeing with you. Or "sticking to your guns", even though that's what you do in every argument you get into here. Next time you have a strong opinion about something will it be okay for me to sarcastically comment on how pointless it is for anybody to argue with you, and to keep sticking to your guns ol' bean? Or is it only okay if you do it? Oh and by the way, nobody is stopping you from extracting yourself. All you have to do is stop responding if you really don't want to argue about it any more. It's real easy. Well for most people anyway. I've "extracted myself" from arguing with you a bunch of times, I'm not surprised that you haven't noticed. Anyway if JerseyCaptain will allow me to get back on track, the only reason I'm still talking about it is because while people continue to disagree with me - and that's fine - nobody has actually been able to do what I asked, and show me how I'm wrong. So while it's fine if you don't agree that Jenna is the main motivation for Balto in the movie, I haven't yet seen anything that suggests otherwise. And obviously this whole thing can be considered pointless - but in that context, so can this entire site, and all animation, and all fiction. It's not real, so why discuss it, right? It's just something I noticed about the movie, that's all. There are people here who clearly don't like love stories and don't think they belong in a movie like Balto, but I'm suggesting that without the love story there would really be no story at all. At least not in the context of the universe as it was laid out in the movie. I've already shown a lot of examples of this, I don't think I need to show them again. Just ask yourself if Jenna were not in the movie, would Balto have saved Rosy's hat? Would he have been sitting on the edge of his boat looking longingly into town? Would he have gone anywhere near the hospital? And so on and so forth, there are dozens more examples like that. Just think about it. Food for thought, that's all.

I think we've gotten a little off topic here.
I try not to dwell on what I didn't like about this movie because there's almost nothing I didn't like, and focusing on those few things isn't something I'd do for a movie I love. However, I didn't really like how Balto was so quick to befriend Nome after he returned with the serum. I know he wanted to help the town and be accepted, but all the years of rejection and abuse seemed to be forgotten or disregarded so quickly like it was just nothing.

That's quite enough Xaqtly.
The topic had moved one from the previous disagreement and there was no need to drag it up again. This topic is to express what you dislike about the movie and that's what people are doing; there's no need to continue a dead argument over the romantic aspect.
You can make your own topic about that if you wish to keep talking about it but no more on that minor argument here.

Well, there's little in the first, second or third Balto movies to confirm that the situation was one of "years of rejection and abuse". It's possible. But I don't know. I would think that he would have long since abandoned Nome, or become a lot more depressed and forlorned if that were the case. Besides, it is in the character's nature to be forgiving, altruistic and friendly. I don't see him holding a grudge. Even if he mentions in Wolf Quest how the dogs "still sometimes tease him". Now he has friends...and a Nome public who admire him for what sacrifices he made. That would be enough for most people to gain heart.

I'd say he was rejected because of how everyone was to him in the first movie it would suggest it wasn't anything too recent for him. It just seemed like he disregarded all the crap he took from the town pretty easily. While Balto was made to be without any flaws(it sure seems that way to me), I think him being too "good" is a problem for him.

^ I can see your point, but perhaps they just needed to end the film and didn't want to linger on it. Though like JC said, they back track and cover their steps a little in the sequels [more specifically the second when he does indeed mention still being teased]. There honestly isn't a single thing I hate about the first movie. I love the characters, the animation, the plot, the music. Even though it's only loosely based on what happened, it's a great movie. Quote: True, but the silver lining is that the movie does raise awareness about Balto and his story. If it weren't for the movie I would never have known about him, the serum run, Togo, or anything.

ApauloWolf wrote: Actually, Rosie [sp - correct spelling is "Rosy"...check the end credits of the movie] is a work of fiction as well. And not even the Balto portrayed in the movie is anywhere even approaching what the real Balto was, in form, living conditions or genetic heritage.
