Well the password thing is good, but I can take R things. So in most that would work by age, but for me that wouldn't really work. Cat put it their it's too long to read well the fic is longer then the warnning isn't it? So you can read that but not the warning. If you don't read it, it's their fault if they can read, they can avade what they don't want to read.

No, I guess no one's mentioned those writers who use 'thin description' as you say, Cat.
I've tried to be one of those writers, not only to please the most people, but because I really don't see further description of violence or romance as necessary to the story. Plain and simple.
And I'm by no means the only one!
Juchann17 is an excellant example of a 'thin description' writer of romance.
As are you, Cat, in my humble opinion.
The same goes for Starwarsisme. If you haven't read at least one of his fics, I advise you do. He's got some good ones!
And there are many others who write this way, and they should be commended, lest we forget them.

Write on!

how about this- the fics can remain the way they are- and for R-X rated fics are only available to members whoes age posted is above say 12. and the age should be a mandatory thing to put when becoming a member. and if the person does not have an age posted, they cannot access anything above PG13. how is that steet? is this a good comprimise? it CAN be done.

No, this doesn't work. On the web, anyone can put any age, it's impossible to check if it's true or not. Besides, if I would do that, you would see lots of people changing their ages or creating other accounts just for reading the forbidden fanfics.

Yeah this is true I have seen this around, they could easily get past the system of that, and in some cases the seeing of those things increase because it's suposed to be away. The warnings will have to do which work perfectly fine with me.

Well I have read some fanfictions that had sexual content and also that were violent even though violence doesn't really bother me. But it might for someone else, say for example someone who's 10 or something similar. Also the sexual content thing doesn't bother me but some might get offended and let's keep in mind that this is a kid-friendly site and their safety must be protected by any means. In my mind, the solution would be: the writers to explain in the beginning of the story what it contains (as many writers I've seen done so far) and hopefully it will prevent small kids from reading them though I highly doubt that.

Well well. The argument last night, in the shoutbox (which I saw a discussion about this morning, and went back to observe) proves one thing conclusively:

While the people who write these fan fics (violent, dark, incestual, homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexually-explicit) are probably not bad people in of themselves, and may not be morally-bankrupt, they certainly are SELFISH. What I saw proves that the attitude on that side of the fence is:

1. Eh...kids SHOULD be exposed to disturbing images, it's good for 'em.

2. Parents who try to monitor what their kids do are -bastards-.

3. We HAVE to be sensitive to the feelings of homosexual members.*

4. If kids go and read these fan fictions, it's still not the WRITER'S fault that the fictions are there.

5. The fan fiction moderators are at fault for allowing such things to be posted in the first place!

6. These KIDS should stop complaining...they read it, it's their fault.**

7. The Balto characters are CARTOONS. What's the big deal?

8. We certainly don't want this to become some lame retarded thing like a Disney website. Those people are so clean and sanitized.***

If you want, go ahead and look back at the shoutbox, and you'll see exactly what I mean. Each of those eight bulleted points was stated (word-for-word, or almost so) in that argument. And while it saddens me that this issue is the hardest that Balto Source has ever had to face (inasmuch as I can tell), I am STILL proud to stand with those who are opposed to the "anything goes" mindset. And those points above prove just how much our societies have indeed fallen into decay (NOTE TO SELF: prepare for the paranoid responses and accusations). I'm sort of glad I wasn't here for that argument.

*You know what? I'm not tip-toeing around ANYONE. I don't care about their race, religion, sex, sexual preference, or national origin. And I don't take that into account when I interact with people. I judge people on WHO they are, not WHAT. But I am a hardlined opponent of "political correctness", a liberal concept. Odd that it is so much like communism...where we are FORCE-FED, and threatened if we dare to speak our minds about how we feel, IF that runs counter to the politically-correct mindset. And liberals (be they straight, gay, or bi) have probably done more to DAMAGE the gay lifestyle than any random dumb redneck in a pick-up truck with a crowbar and a "mission". Because homosexuals should be able to enjoy their lifestyle in peace, IN PRIVACY.

This stuff belongs in appropriate forums. Places where those who enjoy heteroerotic or homoerotic material (or deviant stuff like incest, gratuitous violence, or "dark" themes) can gather and share with those of a like mind, without being harrassed or facing opposing viewpoints. And that's supposed to be a GOOD THING!

No matter what a couple of people have said HERE, I have yet to have seen ANYONE condemn the writers of this material, or condemn homosexuals. With regard to homosexuality and bisexuality, I have seen some people express distaste for homosexuality and bisexuality. That is no crime, and is fundamentally different than condemning the persons themselves. With regard to the fan fictions, I've seen people express varying levels of distaste for them. But never ONCE a condemnation of the writers.

So we REALLY need to focus here, and the writers of that material who have become defensive and aggressive really need to stop accusing their opposition of things that are not true.

**I've got news for you people, there are plenty of teens and some adults who are of the same mind, and it is probably mostly THEM, rather than kids, who are complaining.

Either way you slice it, a decision will be reached soon. And it is clear that, unless it is a moderate decision, the result will cause some members on one or the other side of this debate to probably pack up and leave BS. Of course, that is something only each individual member can decide, and it would be a shame. But people will do what they will do. And besides, the way things are looking

***To borrow one of member AlaskasJenna's tactics: [sarcasm]Gee whiz. What a horrible, horrible thing.[/sarcasm]

And I also agree with Juuchan about one thing in particular (I'm sure I agree with her on some other things she said, but this one caught my eye): I'm sick of having Kodi/Kirby shoved down my throat everywhere I turn on this forum. "ZOMG NEW KODI/KIRBY FIC!!!" "OOH KODI/KIRBY FANART LOOK LOOK!!!1" "KODI AND KIRBY FOREVER!!!!!111" Okay, we get it. You like that fan pairing. Good for you. Now please stop shoving it in our face so that we can actually look at a single page on the forum where it's not mentioned.

Thank you. At least I know I'm not the only one that's annoyed by this.

Look, I have nothing against these "gay pairings" (and personally, I think Kodi/Kirby is an interesting one), but it's getting old. Thanks.

Anywho, back to the subject:

Thanks, LoneWolf_fanwriter. (Is that supposed to be a good compliment? I'm afraid I don't understand whether you're praising me or putting me down. Gah.)

BaltoSeppala: Nice use of sarcasm, BTW.

As the "catalyst" of these "terrible incest" fics that these people speak of, this may surprise many - I'm not selfish. I just write whatever my mind wishes to write; isn't that how writers work? I get an idea for something that has never been done before and add my personal touches to it. It just comes natural to me. I know you have read some of my fics, so writer-to-writer, I understand that you may not like certain situations in some stories, but you have to face it - the story is ultimately up to the writer in control.

(Note: When I say "you", I mean "you" as in a whole, so don't take this personally, okay?)

That's the point of writing. If you want stories written in a certain way, then by all means, write it! Who cares what others think? Writing is a form of self-expression and free will of the writer.

(But when it comes to certain topics - sexual situations, gore, homosexuality - that's when you might want to warn people early, even if they disregard it. It's still the reader's choice whether they read a certain story or not. Plus, the writer should make sure to post it where it belongs, with the correct ratings and all, or else the writer will be at fault if someone gets P.Oed about something they read and blame the wrong people.)

Honestly, I don't feel the need to continue this argument, because I do believe it has been discussed elsewhere (look for it, I know they're here . . . closed and locked, most likely - multiple times perhaps.), but no offense - this is getting stupidly childish.

I do believe that you do have a point on many of the issues that you have stated. I understand that these shout-box conversations do not truly state the opinions of everyone here on Balto Source, and that you (as a writer also), as do many writers, have the right to use their creative license to write whatever they wish (although I think some abuse that privilege by "following the bandwagon" of popular themes instead of making their own original ideas).

Hopefully, this situation will be resolved and all will be well again. I can't wait. (BTW, I won't be scared away so easily, unlike others. I have my ways to satisify anyone that wants to read my stuff.)

No harm done, Juuchan. You know I think highly of you as a writer, and that I would not want to find myself at odds with you. I was speaking generally. Unless I'm somehow mistaken, not all of your fan fics fall into these questionable categories. Am I right? I've been so absorbed in this, I've kinda forgotten what I've read of everyone's. :|

(Incidentally, thanks for the notice of my cute use of sarcasm. lol. And I also happen to be one of those who's SICK AND TIRED of the Kodi/Kirby nonsense, and everyone talking it up with their signature images. PFF.)

It's my understanding that Steet is coming close to his decision on this, and I believe he's preparing something which will work for the great majority. But I don't want to steal his thunder, so I'll say no more.

no offense BaltoSeppala, but why do you insist on making long redundant statments that know one seriously want to keep reading? why cant you come directly to the point? it's really frustrating to try and read all of that, and it's really just irritating when you keep saying the same thing.

my point is that the kids SHOULD be held acountable for thier actions, if they have such a problem, why do they keep reading the stuff? because obviously they can't be bothered that much, if they keep doing it. Aside from that, a lot of the stuff that you said writers feel is TRUE. And EVERYONE kid, teenager, whatever should respect that without a problem.

No offense, Rozalyn, but why do you insist on criticizing my posts, rather than debating logically?

a. You must have read it, or else you wouldn't have said that. My point is there. I am hardly beating around the bush. It's often not as easy as all that to make a point in one sentence, Roz. If people want to understand my position, they will read. There's another problem with younger readers...so tied into the internet, that they find it impossible (or perhaps tedious and painful) to read anything more than a short paragraph. An intelligent discourse is not often possible within the confines of a few short sentences. So, as has often happened HERE, they just glance over someone's post, and then jump to some very illogical (and often inane and enflammatory) conclusions.

b. Ah. I see. So kids, who lack a certain degree of maturity, logic, and responsibility should be held fully accountable for reading these fan fictions, but the writers bear no responsibility whatsoever? No offense to you, but you've been taking lessons in morality and ethics from Hollywood and video game designers, huh?
