Same here. Except I hadn't read Big Fish. Liked the movie though. But I was the same with Twilight. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaated the book...the movie was half decent. Same goes for the Harry Potter books. Only the first two movies could come close to equaling the books. The rest took a nose-dive in the land of epic fail! D:

Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations."

Talk about a boring book! Usually I can follow largely boring and rambling books (see: any James Michener novel), but this one just crossed a line for me or something, I dunno. Maybe I'll try it again later in life.

Really dull, even lamer than Twilight. Bella keeps whinning, wanting one thing, and Edward keeps saying no. (If he keeps saying no get it threw your head!)

Rising Sun by Michael Crichton. It sounded too much like a question and answer novel. What I mean by that is one character would ask a question, and another would just have all of the answers. I actually stopped reading it half way through because of that. I like thriller, but there's nothing thrilling when all of the questions are being answered.

I forgot the title and who it's by, but I ended up leaving it on the bus I got so sick of it. The one thing I remember the most is how descriptive the writer was in certain scenes. He described more than was needed. Something like 'he takes a shower, dries himself off and puts on clean clothes.' I'm so glad he mentioned all that cause I would never have been able to picture what happens in my mind. The final straw was when he described a lock box being 'big enough to fit three roasted chickens inside.' I'm not joking, that's what was in the story. When I read that, I started asking myself 'was that necessary? Couldn't he have just said "one of the biggest lock boxes in the bank" and let the reader figure out the size on their own?' I'd describe what the book was about, but with it being a thriller, it'll take a lot of explaining to do in order for people to narrow it down.

As for Harry Potter.. never had any interest in it.

I didn't state it before, but I don't think I really had to...there are very few books that can turn my stomach and truly want to make me vomit, or even fall asleep for that matter. I'm a tolerant person, and most writing styles generally do not perturb me When I do come across one, I won't always try to steer people away unless it's just truly awful. Here are some books that I don't particularly like, that I didn't think of earlier:

1. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
This one I just thought was dreadfully boring. It was required reading in my 9th grade English class - high school for crying out loud! It's at best at a 4th grade reading level, and that's about the last age that the content is really appropriate for as well. It's made up of many dinky little poetic short stories called vignettes which offer little meaning to anyone past elementary school age.
2. The Stranger by Albert Camus
Maybe it was bad translation of my particular volume (it was originally written in French), maybe it was the pointlessness of the plot, essentially existing only to explain the plight of an existential character (which could have been told in a 10-15 page short story just as well) or maybe it was just the general style and tone of the book. Any way you look at it, I just did not find it pleasant to read.
3. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
I'm on the fence about this one. It does have a lovely story, but the thing is just so darn boring and hard to really get into until about halfway through, that you nearly forget the first half of the book just trying to get there.
4. How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill
Another one I'm on the fence about. It's good as far as content goes, a great work describing the historical significance that the Irish had in saving literature of all types so that civilization could continue. But, as with so many others I've listed, it's very hard to really "get into" and focus on it, because the tone is uninteresting and the pace is slow.
5. Something to Declare by Julia Alvarez
No offense to Ms. Alvarez, for it certainly wasn't her fault that I was stuck reading this my freshmen year at college, with no idea who she was at the time or what she'd written. Nevertheless, book with collected essays about good writing, even those that include funny and entertaining anecdotes about said writer's life experiences, are just plain dull unless you are already very familiar with the author and have a general respect/liking for him/her. After reading this book, I certainly do have that respect for her as a writer, but all-in-all, she's not a very well-known writer and her books and essays are not renowned for her remarkable writing skill. So really, why bother to have them all published together with a sort of commentary on writing, even at the urging of your publisher? Not to mention, with no general guiding thought or theme other than what Ms. Alvarez does herself to be a good writer (and even these ideas are jumbled and mixed in a confusing order amongst the stories included), it makes this book terribly hard to become interested in, follow, and gain any knowledge from. But, then again, it was meant to be for those who were already familiar with her works, to explain her life and why she became a writer in the first place.

I have to halfly disagree....I enjoyed that book kinda. It's interesting because that will be America in the near future, which is sad. I'd probably be one of the people burned to death with my books *.*

Montag did the right thing.

I've always hated The House On Mango Street. I live in a primarily Hispanic city and have no interest in books regarding a Hispanic family. I'm not being Racist at all, a lot of my friends ARE The House On Mango Street.

Over the Summer I was forced to choose a book to read and chose Animal Farm by George Orwell. It was another half and half book. The idealism was wonderful however I don't know anything about The Russian Revolution(because that book, or so I've been told, is a mimicry of the Russian Revolution.). But I like how it basically says 'All men are animals' and I agree.

Kohaku Zero- perhaps that's not your style of reading. The reason Edward says he doesn't want her is because he cares for her so much and he's afraid he'll screw up and end up killing her because her scent is so tantalizing. Besides, like any Twilight fan knows, the Volturi cannot have a human knowing about Vampires unless that human dies or becomes one. And obviously you're not a Romantic, because Bella keeps 'whining' because she understands she loves Edward more than life itself. She is at a crossroads in her life when Edward leaves, because she's torn between Jacob and depression, and suicide(On the cliff scene I think she tried to kill herself, or Edward's voice in her head drove her nearly insane). If you are able to look deep, you can see all these things in a book. However, if the book you choose to read is not your taste, then I don't blame you for interpreting it that way.

That 'romance' doesn't make any sense to me. That'd be like me falling in love with a hamburger and trying not to eat it. :B

A hamburger has more personality than the common self-insert Mary Sue.

Have you seen the parody of the Twilight trailer where Edward falls in love with a cheeseburger?
