Mario wins anyday, hands down, no competition etc.
Perhaps the greatest ever console game is Super Mario Land for Snes. It has everything ^^

Hey check out this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_%26_ ... mpic_GamesIt is a (soon-to-be) game about the 2008 Olympics, featuring Sonic and Mario, and all the characters from their respective games. If any one already said this, I'm sorry, but I must have missed it.

I grew up with Mario. The original Super Mario Bros. has more nostalgia for me than any other game. Sonic was always the kid living on the other side of the street, while Mario practically lived in my household I still want to see Sonic in Super Smash Bros. Brawl though! Mario, hands down. After playing several Sonic games for the Gamecube (and the latest one for Wii), I can still honestly say that Mario games, simple and basic as they may be to some, have never failed to disappoint me as far as gameplay and overall satisfaction goes. I could not say the same for the Sonic games I've played, or at least the GC ones. The controls were frustrating, the levels weren't fun, and I was left disappointed after finishing them. Mario at least had fun levels and tight, easy controls. Who cares about Mario being short and fat when his games had such quality? A complicated story isn't everything. In fact, simplicity is one of the very things that propelled Mario to his status as one of the most well-known video game characters in the world.

Mario seems to have both a larger fan base and amount of modern games. Sonic is a great character in my opinion but his recent games have been terrible, if Ubisoft gets backs to the character's routes in this upcoming RPG I might come to prefer Sonic over Mario once again but until then Mario is my all time favorite Nintendo character.

I'd say Mario. The Sonic Movies and Cartoon series were great, but Mario had a sweet theme song and super cool video games.

Just to say: Sonic is SEGA and the new RPG, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, is being made by BioWare and SEGA, not Ubisoft.
