The cougar jumped up from her sleep, momentarily forgetting what had happened the previous day. Or was it the day before that? She looked around in nervous desperation. There, no more then 100 yards away, was the stag, grazing in the distance. He picked up his head upon hearing the leaves rustling around the tawny cat. He smiled warmly at her.
--Good afternoon.-- He greeted as he approached. --How are you feeling?--
She stared at him for several moments as visions from the day she met this Prince flooded her memory. She blinked a few times, then cleared her throat.
--I'm...I'm fine...How long have I been asleep?--
--Oh, about 4 days now. I must admit you had me worried. How does your leg feel?--
She looked over at the leg that had been so terribly wounded. But aside from a clean scab, it felt fine. She moved it without any pain. Shocked, she stood up. Her leg was healed.
--Wha...it's all healed! How did that happen?--
Bambi laughed. --My father taught me about certain plants that stop pain and heal wounds. You lost a lot of blood and then you were unconscious. I moved your body to the base of this mountain.--
The cougar stepped out of the embankment beneath an old fir stump and observed her surroundings. Sure enough, they were at the base of a large, rocky mountain, sparse coniferous trees scattered up the rocks. She blinked in bewilderment.
--Why did you bring me here?-- She asked suspiciously.
--Well, it's one of the safest places in the forest. Man never comes here. Do you like it?--
The cougar looked at the mountain in awe and sighed. --It looks like my old territory. But man burned it down so I...I...-- She swallowed and looked at Bambi bashfully. --I have nowhere to go.--
Bambi lowered his ears in sadness. --That's terrible.-- Suddenly, he smiled and perked up again. --Would you like to see it?--
Before she could say a word, the stag had already started up the mountain. She stood there, watching him ascend. He stopped and turned, motioning his head for her to follow.
--C'mon. It's really quite nice. Beautiful views, and very private too.--
The cougar flattened her ears and turned away. The main word was 'private'. No one would be able to see her injure the stag from there. Maybe she could even kill him if she backed him into a canyon. And now that he trusted her...
A pang of guilt swept over her. Bambi TRUSTED her. A naive decision, but it was his none-the-less. He trusted her. Not only did he trust her, he saved her life. Not only did she owe him HIS life, but she felt she also owed him the truth. The REAL reason why she was there.
But then what would become of her? Would the Prince seek vengeance by slaying her? Would he drive her away? She had nowhere else to go. Ronno's deal was the only things she was certain of. At least with him, she knew she would have new hunting grounds. A place to call home...
--Well?-- Bambi called out again. --Are you coming or not?--
Sitting on her haunches, she peered at him from the corner of her eye. She needed to make a decision and she needed to do it now.
--Yes.-- She answered quietly. --I'm coming.--
But in her mind, she wept woefully. 'I'm so sorry......'
