Corvin stared into Soleil's warm, beautiful face as she struggled to see through the shadows of the thick forest. Even in the darkness, her olive-green eyes danced and sparkled. Indeed, she made him feel at ease; his light in a world of blackness. He closed his own yellow eyes and sighed.
"'I know you think he's interesting and clever..."' Corvin whispered, even his own hushed tone seemed to boom over the silence. "'But I don't trust him.'"
Soleil smiled soflty.
"'I know you don't. But you should really give him a chance.'"
Corvin quivered inside at her gesture of defending the calico-colored buck.
"'I wish no harm on him." Corvin's voice suddenly deepened. "I just wish he'd go back where he came from.'"
"'Go back where I came from?'" His calm yet commanding voice ripped through their ears like daggers.
They both turned sharply to see Zayn approaching them from the shadows of the surrounding trees. He wasn't a terribly muscular buck, but he was tall and thin. His mighty rack, which seemed too large and heavy for his neck, jetted high above his head, forked and sharp. His own eerie yellow eye throbbed as his anger steadily increased. He took another step towards the couple.
"'You want me to return from whence I came.'" He stopped for a momentary chuckle of amusement. "'Have you any idea of the condentations of your request? Do you? Have you the slightest idea where I come from?'" His voice steadily became louder, more aggressive. "'I was tortured, abused, poked, prodded, electrocuted, attached to machines day in and day out all in the name of science. You think you know of hell? You know NOTHING.'" His voice screeched with frustration at the last word. '"I lived there. I escaped. Believe me, I have absolutely no intention of going back."'
Soleil lowered her ears at the horrifying story, feeling remorse and pity for the newcomer. But Corvin just narrowed his eyes in agitation, feeling nothing but malice. Noticing this, Zayn took a deep breath and focused his calm energy at the dark young buck.
"'I am different, Corvin.'" He said in a quieter tone. "'I was hoping that, of everyone in this forest, you'd understand."'
The ruse didn't calm Corvin down at all. In fact, it only infuriated him even more.
'"You know that, huh?'" Corvin's voice deepened as he lifted his raging gaze to Zayn. '"Is that what you know?'" He took a step forward, his antlers lowered defensively. "'You just know everything, don't you?"' He cringed as the familiar haunting cackle of the beast within echoed in his ear.
Zayn gasped, knowing what he had provoked. The hairs on the back of his neck became bristled, and he took a step back.
'"Wait!'" Soleil suddenly leapt between them, snapping Corvin out of his stupor. She looked pleadingly into Zayn's face. '"Don't be mad at him, Zayn. I was the one who was questioning you. Corvin was just agreeing with me."' She turned and looked hopefully into Corvin's face. "'Isn't that right, Corvin?"'
Corvin growled a little on the inside, and reluctantly nodded. He relaxed and lowered his guard. "'Right. I'm sorry."'
Soleil sighed in relief and looked back at Zayn. He had released a huge lungful of air. He didn't even realize he'd been holding his breath. He stared into Sol's face and smiled.
"'I cannot remain upset with you. You are forgiven.'" He looked past her at Corvin. "'As are you, my friend. I apologize for my hostile response. But if you knew where I came from, well, you'd react with hostility as well."'
At the pleading request of Soleil, Corvin forced a crooked grin.
Relieved that a disaster had been averted, Soleil bowed her head respectfully to her two friends and left. Zayn and Corvin stood alone in the forest, silence coating the entire area. Corvin kept his head and eyes down, not wanting to even look at Zayn. As soon as Soleil was out of range, Zayn chuckled.
"'Well, I suppose the old saying has some truth to it.'" He said aloud as he turned to leave. "'Evidently, only beauty can tame the Beast."'
That last dig caused Corvin to snap his head up, but Zayn had already gone. Corvin snorted angrily and pawed the dirt in a rage, leaving behind deep scars in the dirt.
His heart was full of hate, and the beast within lusted for Zayn's blood. But, Soleil's face entered his mind. She, who was kind of heart and strong of mind. She looked past the monster and saw something special inside of Corvin. Perhaps, he thought, she can see something special inside Zayn, too. Something Corvin couldn't see. Maybe even something Corvin didn't want to see. His anger depleted, Corvin stood alone, shivering. Who was Zayn anyway? Friend or foe? Only time would know the answer....

A little 'what-if' scene for "The Untamed Path". I'm hoping it'll give Feather a good idea on the type of character Zayn is and the manner of which his dialogue could be delivered. Also a little example of the 'relationship' Zayn has with Soleil and Corvin in the beginning.
I'm actually very proud of this render; I LOVE how Corvin came out...looking very serial-killer-ish XD But I'm most proud of Zayn, since I rendered him from 3 different screencaps. This was the first time I ever made my own pose by taking the head, body and antlers of 3 different shots and combining them into a new pose. I had fun with that :P

Kodaik: After seeing you do it with some of your characters, I thought it looked like fun so I gave it a try. Especially since I'm increasingly running out of poses to choose from, haha! Thanks very much, and I'm getting excited about it too!
Feather: I'm glad this helped! Despite the fact that his antlers make him look like a Megaloceros, Zayn is actually VERY afraid of Corvin. He knows of the beast who lurks within. Though Zayn never meets Nacht officially, he often speaks to Nacht's spirit through the ghost-eye (since the eye belonged to Nacht originally). Though Nacht never witnessed Corvin's brutality, the ghost-eye offers Zayn a spirit-vision of what Corvin had done in the past. And, actually, it's because his antlers are so grossly huge that Zayn doesn't like to fight with anyone. Though the deer in the forest aren't evolved enough to understand, Zayn is well aware that his antlers are too big for his neck to support during a full-on attack. The force of a head-butt received by another buck combined with the sheer weight of the antlers could literally snap Zayn's neck in an instant. This is why Zayn doesn't fight, but rather, uses his other skills to intimidate; namely, his brilliant mind. Glad you like it, Feather!
