Yeah, I just HAD to do this. Jack Frost and Nilak, then! I had a LOT of thinking to do during the drawing process, and only now, typing, head turne to stare at the paper art, I realize Nilak's head-shape is funny-looking. :P Anyway, here's what I think:
Jack? He looks GREAT. Just... fantastic. Heavily reffed, like... REALLY heavily reffed, but fantastic, so don't mention it so I can feel good about myself! That hair? SO much fun to work with. I cannot even begin to describe it. It's just SO MUCH FUN!!! Idlno, Jack's just got a fun character design.
...and it makes sense.
ANy-wayyy, Nilak is fairly young here, and it's just now getting cooler in the Taiga(? or is this the Tundra? Ugh. ALWAYS mix those up.), and so her fur is somewhere between all-short and all-thick. That's why she kinda looks mangey.
Oh! There's another reason she looks mangey. As I was drawing this, I was thinking, "Now, how would this picture function in a way that's semi-believable and could occur?" Here's how. Nilak - this is obviously an alternate continuity - is separated from her mom and can't find her, so she wanders on her own. High-point of summer occurs, and is a VERY low point for caribou. The bugs are harrassing her, shes rolling in the water, screaming, burying her face in the moss, anything to keep them out of her nose and eyes while they sting her(This actually happens a ton to the poor creatures...). Jack's duty is upon him here -- he brings winter, after all -- so he sees her, and, cue sudden cold draft, kills the bugs on the spot. Nilak's a curious calf, so she looks up to see what just happened. There leaning against that... tree... back there... in the background...(Yeahthatdoesn'tlooklikenotree) is Jack Frost. Nilak doesn't know folk-lore, of course, but she does know SOMETHING causes frost to appear and look so pretty.
Here he is.
She feels courageous enough that she walks right up to him, but, clearly - and with good reason - fears being rejected, just like all the other cows rejected her.
But Jack just doesn't.
----
So I expect a few more pictures of the two since I imagine that the Caribou range is terribly large and poor little Nilak JUST found someone who isn't trying to chase her off.
Anyway I've been watching trailers for Rise of the Guardians for awhile now, and originally planned on drawing Jack with Tupilek.
Then, I went and saw the movie, and... Holy. Cuh-rap. The music, the animation, the character designs - AND THE REINDEER! If I didn't know for SURE the movie was gonna be awesome while I stared at Jack's flowy-ful hair and reflective eyes, I knew it when I saw the reindeer.
Guess what?
They were coloured right.
The NOSES were right.
......
...THEY GOT THE ANTLERS RIGHT!!! AND THE FEET -- I almost squee'd out LOUD in the middle of the movie theater.
So yeah, Jack Frost and a caribou? Perfect picture right there.
Just lineart. Should I go through the effort to color this??
...Hey, I stopped callin 'im "Frost."
