Rumours spread that there was a group of hunters who were looking to shoot animals for their pelts and other features like antlers. Kupiq's mother was still not caring much for him, and barely acknowledged his presence, so why would shy care about hunters that could endanger her life and her sons. A shot to the leg got her thinking straight. The pain was such a surprise to her, and she bolted into the forest, Kupiq following close behind. Even with the bullet still lodged in her leg, she forgot the pain and she was too fast for the little fawn to keep up, and in the chaos around him, animals running, hiding and hollering in pain when they were caught, he lost his mother. But he kept moving. He didn't stop, He couldn't stop.
Eventually, things quietened down, and when he finally stopped, he realised he was in an unfamiliar place. Fear took control of him; every leaf that rustled made him jump. Finally, when he could take it no more, he ran. He ran with tears streaming down his face. He would never get home. He would never see his friends, or his family, or his unloving mother, ever again. These thoughts raced through his mind, and the tears in his eyes blurred his vision, until he ran smack bang right into another fawn. The fawn's name was Jasmine. She was beautiful, even with his teary eyes he could tell that. Jasmine led him to her home where he was introduced to the other deer in Jasmine's herd.
Kupiq was taken in by a doe that had lost her own fawn, and she was able to teach Kupiq things he should know, but he was still a long way behind the other fawns. He even began to feel jealousy for some of the other fawns, the ones that were smart and well-educated, that had loving families and friends. He felt pain because of his separation from his family, and the only way he felt he would get rid of that pain was to think of the better side of life, but there wasn't much of that to think of. Jasmine was the only thing that came to mind. He had a goal to become popular, smarter, braver, faster, and to win Jasmine's heart. He became more of a show off around her, and acted higher than everyone else.
One day, he stumbled across another lost fawn, going by the name of Akiko. He showed her the way to the herd and left her with one of the does, thinking that would be the last of her. But Akiko kept following him around, wanting to be his friend and wanting to hang out with him, but Kupiq just thought she was annoying. Deep inside though, he actually had a liking for her, but couldn't even admit it to himself.
When they were older, it was time to find a mate. His heart was set on Jasmine, but she had other plans. She became mates with Sarapen and they had two fawns, Clove and Tupan. Kupiq didn't give up though, he still tried as hard as he possibly could to change her mind, and become her mate. Jasmine continued to reject him, staying loyal to her beloved Sarapen.
When he was old enough, the time came for him to leave and start his own heard. He didn't belong in this place where his crush rejected him and everyone else was a show off in his mind. When he left, Akiko followed. Not being able to change her mind (and partially not wanting to be alone) he allowed her to come with him.
Soon he had a large herd, completely made up of females (he hadn't come across any males who wanted to join), with a territory all his own. But after a while, the lands started to die. The herd was too large to occupy any other herd's land without destroying it. But a stag from a faraway land said he had enough room and food for the herd, all except Kupiq. Dominant males weren't allowed in his herd in fear of them taking over. Kupiq made all the females leave, even Akiko, who desperately wanted to stick by Kupiq.
Kupiq travelled far. Because he was alone, it was easier to find refuge with another herd. He returned to the herd he grew up with, where he lived for a long time. He had long since given up on Jasmine, and decided it was time to search for a mate. The first thought that flashed across his mind when he thought about mates was Akiko, but he still didn't understand his feelings for her yet. He was unsuccessful in finding a mate in the herd, and thought that there was still a mate out there for him, he just hadn't found her.
Just under a year after his return to the herd, he found a young, lost fawn, strangely familiar in appearance. Her name was Gisela, and she had lost her mother. He helped her find her mother, who turned out to be Akiko, and the young fawn was none other than Kupiq's own daughter. It was then he realised, although he still didn't understand his feelings towards Akiko, that he knew Akiko must be the one.
