What I do is open up two windows for gimp.. so you dont get confused on what to cut and what not to cut, take the bg pic and paste it on the final window, paste a diff pic on the other window, click on the first tool, pick out what I want, cope it paste it onto final, and lower the opasity... follow for the rest of the image and ta da! Some peopel may do it different, but I do it that way

how do you make it transparent like that? awesome by the way
