Winter had turned to spring, and spring then finally turned to summer. Jack and Kuro were all grown up now, and life seemed pretty balanced and peaceful. However, for a while Kuro hadn't exactly been feeling like his own self. He would spend more and more time outside, and sometimes appeared moody and distant. Jack, growing worried about his friend, decided to follow him one night, and found the wolf at the lake near their house, staring at the moon.
- Hey, there you are, the wolfdog began, bringing Kuro back from his thoughts, and made him turn towards him with raised brows.
- Jack? What are you doing here? he asked, as the creamy brown wolfdog approached him.
- I could ask you the same thing. What's with you lately? You keep disappearing into these "nightly walks", and quite frankly, you haven't been yourself for a while now, Jack spoke, with a hint of worry in his voice, Kuro sighed, and looked at his paws.
- Come on, Kuro, we've always been able to share everything with each other, good or bad. Talk to me, pal, Jack pleaded, with raised brows. Kuro looked at his paws, sighed, and raised his head.
- Alright. I think... he began, closing his eyes for a brief moment, then opened them again and looked at his friend.
- I think it's time for me to go.
- Go? Go wher... Jack began, until he immidietally realized what Kuro meant, and nodded slowly.
- Ohh... you mean, go... back to the wild, he said, lowering his voice, and turning his head to the side.
- I'm sorry, Jack, I've really liked it here with you, and I'm grateful to you and your master for taking me in, but... Kuro began, sighed and turned to now properly face the wolfdog.
- The truth is, I'm still a wolf, after all. And my place is not in a human house. It's out there, in the wild, where you originally found me. Besides, I've just had this feeling for while that there's something out there for me.. something big, he continued, glancing over his shoulder into the mountains and forests in the distance. Jack could hear determination in his voice, and he clearly had given this a lot of thought. Though still, Jack couldn't hide his disappointment, and lowered his ears a little bit.
- I guess I understand, in a way, but... I was hoping that we'd be friends forever, the young wolfdog said quietly, and Kuro began to smile.
- Hey, we will be! Nothing's ever going to change that fact, he said, and now Jack's ears slowly perked back up, and he raised his head.
- Jack.. you're not just my best friend, you're my brother. And this isn't farewell, I'm sure we'll bump into each other every now and then, Kuro continued with a smile, and a raised brow, and Jack's face now slowly turned into a smile.
- Well... Yeah, I guess so. Just promise me you'll take care of yourself, okay? he said with raised brows, and Kuro smiled.
- Of course, and you too, smiled, then he put his paw on Jack's shoulder, and continued:
- And remember; no matter what happens, you and I are brothers forever.
Jack now began to smile properly, and also put his paw on Kuro's shoulder.
- Brothers forever, said the wolfdog with a smile, Kuro returned the smile, and then, they bid farewell for now, and Kuro too off, heading for the mountains. Jack watched as he disappeared into the distance, sighed quietly, then he turned around, and headed home - wondering when they'd meet again...
