Fool's Gold

Fool's Gold

Is the collar cursed? I'll let you decide.

The Legend - Chase.
Breed - Siberian Husky
Age(s) - 2 - 6

Chase was the only one to keep the collar for the majority of his sledding career, and the only one to not lose it through competition.

Fate - Sacrificed himself for his team in a bear attack.
Other - 1. After Chase's death there was a scramble to try and find if he'd had any pups, as they were to be deemed highly valuable. (Nobody knew about Vincent as Chase rarely brought the pup around his musher, or anyone for that matter.)
2. Much of the "collar" had to be replaced. Like Chase it did not survive the bear attack. The gold pieces are the only remaining bits of the actual collar.

The Magician - Wizard
Breed - Alaskan Malamute
Age(s) - 6 - 8 1/2

Held onto the collar after Chase for about three seasons.

Fate - Had to be euthanized after developing cataracts.
Other - 1. Was the largest dog to win the golden collar, and the only one who knew Chase. The rest were born after Chase had died.

The Duchess - Vendetta
Breed - Siberian Husky
Age(s) - 2 - 4

Was the first female sled dog to earn the title. Held onto the collar for two seasons.

Fate - After being used as a sled dog, she ended up dying due to complications while birthing a litter of pups.

Other - 1. Came from the same breeder as Chase. No relation to him at all, although on various occasions she claimed to be his niece.
2. Had a regal air to her, however she was also very selfish.

The Ruffian - Blarney
Breed - Siberian Husky x Unknown - thought to be some sort of retriever.
Age - 4 - 6 1/2

The only mixed breed to earn the collar. Was very brutal and held onto the collar for two and a half seasons.

Fate - Died of jaundice not more than a month after he lost the collar
Other - 1. Was very small, but overcame this by having a nasty temper.

The Whisper - Bluebell
Breed - Siberian Husky
Age(s) - 3 - 4

Her victory over Blarney was quite the surprise as she was very timid and tended to fall back on long races. Held onto the collar for one season.

Fate - Bluebell was a hemophiliac and ended up dying after a spill while on a routine run.
Other - 1. Had heterochromia iridium in her right eye.

The Beast - Steele

Easily beat Bluebell's team, sources say through cheating. Held onto the collar well past his course - he disappeared with it after being booted out of town. Is counted as holding onto it for three seasons.

Fate - Still alive. Was kicked out of town though.
Other - 1. Steele was greatly inspired by the predecessors; particularily Chase. Steele looked back on the former's mistakes (Bluebell's timidness, Blarney's extremely ruthless nature, Vendetta's selfish nature, Wizard's habitual womanizing, and Chase's sacrifice and either applied those qualities to himself or disposed of them immeadiately. Which is why he is fairly ruthless, seems to have a way with the ladies, doesn't care about anyone other than himself, and his lack of empathy to his team.)

Also, not planning to do anything with any of these characters. I've just had ideas for them for a bit and decided to make a not-so-quick render of all of them. If anyone is interested in them, just let me know.

Also - did not include Iron because while he does currently have the collar, he did not win it. This is just an image of the ones who won it. Seems like Iron isn't unscathed though - check out his history here : http://www.animationsource.org/balto/en/chars/Iron_naegi/48899.html

I really like this image! I think it's cool that you put little descriptions about them. It makes each character unique. I have to say, I'm really interested in Vendetta and Blarney.

DT - Thank you very much. That quote rings very true in this - many of these dogs were not especially great specimens. (i.e - Blarney's obvious horrid attitude, Wizard's wandering ways....) To be completely honest though, I was thinking more along the lines of the "Mummy's Curse" where all parties involved (or most - a bit foggy on the details) died of rather bizarre occurrences. In hindsight though, all are pretty natural, or at least fairly understandable. (Chase was killed by a bear, Wizard had to be put to sleep as he was losing his sight and was already fairly old, Vendetta died due to birth complications, Blarney had been ill for years, and Bluebell had a known disorder.)
Still leaves enough to let you wonder though.

WildWind - Thank you!

Interesting concept. If the collar is cursed, then I'd say that the "victory" of obtaining it begs the old question: "What shall it prophet a man if he gains the world but loses his soul?" For all the prestige these dogs may have gotten with the collar, methinks they would have been better off without it.
