"Hey, Champ, ain't it time for you to get outta here?" A rather high pitched voice sounded in Steele's head. Blearily, he woke up to find a lanky husky standing above him. From the information he'd received from old sleddogs, and his now-former musher this was the spitting image of Chase. The dog emitted a light-blue light, the snow around either of the two reflected this. Steele didn't move, and the husky made a clicking noise a few times. ''Well, come on then, Champ.'' He said, repeating himself.
''You're dead,'' Steele growled, raising his head from his paws. ''You're Chase and you're supposed to be dead.''
''This isn't news to either of us, bucko.'' The husky said, the sarcasm in his voice was scathing. The dog's eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced down to Steele's neck. Steele gave a grin, the golden collar. He'd earned it after intense training brought on by his musher to become as good as, if not better than Chase.
''What's wrong Chase? Miss it?'' Steele growled, rising to his feet. To his surprise, Chase was much smaller than Steele had thought he'd be. The ex-champion had angular features, and a wiry body. Steele himself was quite muscular and substantially taller. Steele strode closer to the husky and flashed a grin. Chase merely flicked his left ear, and met Steele's eyes with his own stubborn brown ones.
''The only thing that thing ever gave me was a sore neck,'' Chase said evenly. Steele blinked. This was the ultimate honor bestowed on a sleddog! ''You seem to think differently? You've driven yourself mad with the power you think it has.'' Chase continued, a smirk forming on his face. Steele let out a growl but before he could utter anything else, Chase's mouth opened once more. ''I mean, this diphtheria thing proves that, doesn't it? Pathetic.'' Chase said, turning away. Steele bounded in front of him, and instead of shock he was met with, once more, a calm, vacant expression.
''What do you want?'' Steele hissed, his brow furrowing.
''What do I want?'' Chase echoed. He seemed to ponder this for a second. He rose his brow rather suddenly. ''A race out of Nome, you're supposed to be long gone by now, aren't you champ?'' He said, spitting out the word ''champ'' as he had previously. Instead of being offended, Steele was rather shocked. He'd finally be able to prove that he was faster, and better, than the ex-champion.
''Fine,'' Steele growled, taking off almost immediately. Chase wasn't thrown off in the slightest, and when the apparition was even with Steele he turned his head.
''Cheating already, huh kid?'' Chase said, the scathing tone back in his voice. Steele gave a growl in acknowledgement, and focused his eyes to the ground. From his position, he could easily snap at Chase's paws. But would that have any effect on a ghost? Not giving that much though, Steele lashed out, only to clamp down on cold air. Looking up, Chase had advanced a few yards ahead.
''Gonna have to do better than that, champ, gonna have to do better than that.'' Chase laughed, disappearing into the darkness.

The next morning Steele awoke in the middle of nowhere. Snow surrounded him in every direction. What had happened last night was most certainly a dream. Perhaps even a hallucination, Steele had been lacking on sleep as of late. Looking back, he only saw his pawprints. Steele sighed, and got up, shaking the snow off of his fur. What a strange night indeed.

I like to think that Chase would torment the holders of the golden collar after his death. Or at least Steele, who took the most pride in the collar and thought it made him better than others. Chase may have been many things, but he wasn't egotistical.
And who is the devil here? That's for you to decide.
(And also, I drew Chase so. I couldn't find any screenshots that I liked enough to render into him.)
