Break a Leg

Break a Leg

It was a cold, even frigid morning. Vincent did not want to be outside. His father strode next to him, slowly keeping an even pace with Vincent himself. Vincent gave a discontented sigh and tried to speed up, to throw him off. Chase met it, and looked down at him with an amused look on his face, cocking one eyebrow. Vincent was used to this look. His father gave this look to most things, and it was the look of a challenge. For a moment, playfulness entered the eyes of both dogs. Vincent cast his away with a harsh look at the icy ground, Chase's was smothered as he watched his son's reaction.

''Well aren't you just a chip off the old block?'' Chase said, trying to coax his son to make eye contact once more. The only thing he got was a jaded look from his son.

''No, I'm not,'' Vincent grumbled, his high pitched voice laced with malice. ''I'm not like you at all.'' Chase looked down at his only son for a few moments, feeling anger boil his blood. Vincent had never liked him for whatever reason, and despite all of his thinking Chase could not name a reason why.

''Well, Vincent, I am your father so y'know what? I think we might just be a little alike because that would just make sense, wouldn't it?'' Chase retorted, blinking. Vincent whipped his head up, a deep frown etched into his face.

''I don't care. You don't even act like a dad. All of my friends' dads play with them. You're never even home. I don't see you.'' The pup growled, though he kept his tone even. Chase looked up at the icy road ahead of them. He could just make out the sled, and his musher. Vincent obviously didn't realize that him being away was completely out of his control.

''When I am home, you don't let me near you. What's your mother bribing you with to escort me off?'' Chase said wryly, trying to keep the conversation light. To his surprise Vincent's expression changed from anger to something Chase couldn't quite read. Vincent's eyes lifted to meet his, and they were still quite angry.

''Mom isn't giving me anything. I miss you a lot sometimes, and I saw you walking up the road so I came out by myself. Mom isn't awake yet because YOU didn't tell her you were leaving.'' Vincent said. His son's statement made his heart constrict momentarily. This was the most knowledgeable thing he'd heard his son ever utter, and it was the saddest thing he'd heard in his life. This is exactly what Chase didn't want. He didn't want his family, the ones he loved, to miss him while he would be away for the majority of their lives. For a moment he considered stopping and turning around to take the pup home and not look back at the sled team. This was not an option. He knew his musher would've spotted him by now, and in frustration he looked ahead. Vincent brushed against Chase's front leg. The pup was shivering.

''You have to go now, don't you?'' Vincent squeaked. His tone was bitter, but there was still the underlying sadness of the statement he'd said moments ago.

''Yes, sir. You be good now, take care of your mother for me, alright?'' Chase replied, feigning a small smile. Vincent scoffed and sprang away from his father's leg.

''I wish that you'd just break a leg or something so you could do it yourself!'' The pup yelled over his small shoulder. Chase felt a smirk force it's way onto his face.

''I'll see what I can do about that, son!'' Chase yelled after Vincent, who cast a solitary dirty look over his shoulder.

There was some pain watching his son walk alone, but Chase brushed this off. Vincent didn't need him, nor did he want him. Vincent was going to be better off without him, and Chase couldn't give up on his racing now. However, as Vincent's final remark replayed in his head, Chase decided that he wouldn't mind being out of racing for good.

---------------------------

I just really like Chase a lot. He's horrible, but he knows it and reassures himself that what he's doing is okay. (He thinks that Vincent and Fawn would be better off with someone who could be there for them all the time, and he may be right, but more than likely he's wrong.) And he's already earned the golden collar at this point, so he's been distancing himself from Vincent and Fawn for quite some time.

Poppers - Vincent was born a raggedy old grump. So much anger in so little space can lead to things like this.

Chase is such an arse, but at least he embraces it? He could deny it, which would probably make him worse. lmao
aND VINCENT IS SO LOVELY. At this point in the conversation Vincent was probably thinking he had the upper hand because he is so angsty and snarky. And then Chase just ruins that for him because Vincent had to get all that snark from somewhere. He probably went home and ranted to Fawn for hours about that one comment.
and omfg THANK YOU BAEB. ;w;
