The room was dark, spare for a pale shaft of moonlight that peered in through the window. Benny noted that the small strip of light was just enough to see throughout the room. He was awake and from where he lay he could just make out the larger shape of his brother, Iron. He too, appeared to be awake, staring at his paws hardly. Benny glanced around the room to search for his other siblings, all asleep, before slowly walking over to his brother. Iron only noticed him just before he sat down next to him.
"Where did you go off to today?" Benny asked, a question that had been nagging at him all day. As his siblings played close to the shore and Benny sat as far away from the ocean as he possibly could he noticed one thing. Iron was gone. This he knew because Iron probably would've sat there on that sand dune with him.
Iron blinked at the question, then gave a smile.
'"I saw dad!"' The black and white pup whispered excitedly. While Iron's ears perked right up, Benny's almost lied flat. "We raced, and I did good but..." Iron's ears drooped once more. He looked back to his paws as well. Benny scooted closer.
'"But what?"' He asked, furrowing his brow. Iron looked back to him with an uneasy expression.
"But I missed a turn and tripped over a branch, and then a hill." Iron whispered, sounding absolutely heartbroken. "Dad said if I was his son I wouldn't have done that." With that, Benny felt rage stream through his young body. In fact, he'd never been this angry.
"Well what does he know? He never sees us, he's too stupid to take five seconds off. I don't think he actually races all day," Benny hissed, feeling the fur on his back fluff up and out. "He doesn't care about us Iron. If he did he'd be here." Iron was silent, glancing from his paws to Benny.
"I just wanted to make him proud," Iron said after a long time.
"And if he had half a brain, he would be." Benny replied with a shrug. Iron nodded, but did not seem convinced at all.
"Are you worried about tomorrow?" Iron asked next, rather quietly. Benny pondered this for a second. Benny knew he wasn't as cute or fluffy as most of his siblings. In fact, he was pretty scrawny, with fur that hung loose from his body. Benny personally doubted if anyone would want him, but he knew Iron would go to a good home. The larger pup was already muscled and had sleeker fur.
"A little, why?" Benny asked, shifting his paws. Iron blinked slowly, then looked away.
"If I can't even make dad proud, why would anyone else take a chance on me?" Iron asked glumly. Benny was slapped with a stark realization. All those times Iron had raced on the beach instead of playing, all those times Benny himself had mocked him, he'd only been trying to make Steele proud.
"That's why you run on the beach, isn't it?" Benny sighed, speaking his thoughts.
"Yeah, but I guess that's not enough." Iron muttered. Benny sat up straighter and looked Iron in the eyes.
"You are good enough, you don't have to do that." Benny said, a little louder than the rest of their conversation had been. Iron only nodded halfheartedly, and turned away from his brother. Benny more or less did the same. At least he looked back a few times.

So this is kind of what Benny and Iron's relationship was like. They were really close, and Benny didn't really mess around with Iron as he did others. However when it came to the subject of Steele they never agreed and that is ultimately what drove them apart. Benny was also more mature to the whole Steele - issue, and instead of wanting to make his father be proud of him he did everything he could to just stay away from Steele. Or, on rare occasions, make him remember he actually had a family.
