How to make a fox with a wolf/dog image.

Since I'm return on the english side of Balto source, I've saw that many person tryed to make foxes here. It's a nice idea since foxes are on Balto's univers and there is a fox on the second movie. BUT, most of the people who make foxes don't render them right. Part of them use nice lineart from other website ( ok ), some of them use foxes from other films like " the fox and the hound " ( not sure it's allowed .... ) and the others want to make them by them self with Balto's images.
So for those who want to make they foxes by they own way, here is a little tutoriel.
Have take one of the most used image of Balto to show you every images can be used.
Just a little something before we start ... Just put whiskers on a balto's render DOESN'T make a fox. Foxes and wolves/dogs have TOTALY different anatomy.
The first image is to show it. This looks not like a fox, just a wolf/dog with whiskers like Niju or just realistic wolves/dogs.
The second image is the original image I use without any modifications.
Now I'll tell you what I change in the second one :
- The ears are longer for the foxes.
- The muzzle is thiner.
- The noze is smaller.
- The eyes are smaller.
- The chest is thiner.
- The forearm paws are smaller but strong.
- The toes are smaller ( don't make them too small like Jenna ... It's just proportional to the paws ok ? )
- The body is longer.
- The back is a bit roundness.
- The back paws are smaller.
- The toes are smaller ( don't make them too small like Jenna ... It's just proportional to the paws ok ? )
- The thighs are roundness ( only cause Balto have strange one on the movie =/ )
In this step you have already a better anatomy, but your work is not finish !
Than you can make a first lineart ( like in the third image ). Then you can already put your style in and make something who looks better than the changed image from Balto. I'll help you to see what is not good and had some details you can change on the original image ( like the tail in this case. You can see it's longer, fluffyer and ronderness on the tips than a wolf tail ). I've change the mounth cause I think he looks better like this =D
Than you can change what you think it's not ok. In my case, I've made the head a little bit smaller, the same for the toes and change a bit the back.
To make it, I use a fox photo on google to see if it was looking like a fox or not, you should do the same ^-^ And to show you whiskers don't make a wolf looks like a fox, I don't had some on mine, but you can if you want =D
Than, some little things to say cause I know this will happen.
- I don't make it to make " lulz " about the one who only add whiskers. I just make it to help them, ok ?
- It's not cause I make this render in this style that you can make it with the same style. This is mine, ok ? You just have to add yours like in all your images. ( Seriously, I'm tired to be copied, here or on the others sites with my drawings ). It's to show you the way, now make it in yout own way ^-^
- I know this is not perfect but it's since looks more like a fox.
- And don't use this image, it's not free use.

This was very helpful for me, since i intend to make a few fox
characters myself. It was presented and had a very organized and clear
layout. Thank you. not many people can do this kind of thing easily
which is why this was very well done. =) |
