“Marina, is that you?”
The she-wolf looked over her shoulder, surprised that she had been followed. It was night of her brother’s burial and she still couldn’t believe that he was gone. Her eyes were round and heavy with tears but she wasn’t sure at how long she would hold them back. She silently watched Dakota approach her.
“You know we can’t start Storm’s burial without you,” Dakota whispered softly. “I know this must hurt you-”
“No wolf understands how I feel!” Marina snarled. She blinked, realizing how she had just snapped at her best friend. She quickly turned her head away, chastising herself. “I’m sorry,” she continued now almost at a whine. “I just can’t believe he’s gone. I’m a delta and I couldn’t even protect him from this evil treachery.”
Dakota shuffled closer to her, their fur brushing. “No wolf could have foreseen that attack coming.” His gaze traveled to the starry sky. “Storm was a powerful Gamma and you know that, but every wolf must join our ancestors eventually.”
“But of all wolves, why Storm?” Marina howled. Tears began to flood her vision and they began to roll down her cheek. She threw her head against Dakota’s chest in comfort. “Now that he’s gone, I am alone!” she sobbed.
The Gamma rubbed his nose against the she-wolf’s cheek. He knew the grief she felt after hardly remembering his own parents, let alone now an outsider within their own pack. A tiny sigh escaped him. “But you’re not alone,” he murmured. “You still have me…”
