Shira furrowed her brows, finally catching up to Steele, who had ventured down an empty alleyway. He stopped and plopped down his rump with a huff. Shira frowned. ''Listen to me, Steele!''
''Listen to the woman who stole my job from under my nose? Of course!''
''I didn't even know it was your job!'' Shira retorted. ''All I knew was that he needed a lead dog and I just so happened to be- you know what, this isn't about me. It's about us. No matter how much you whine and cry it's not going to change the fact that in two weeks you and I are going to have to breed.''
''Like hell I will.'' Steele looked away.
''As shameful as you think it might be, it's your job. And I understand. I'm more willing to do this and I'm not even the one who has to do it! Why can't you just suck it up?''
''Because I wasn't made for breeding!'' Steele yelled. ''I was made for racing!''
''Well you can't!'' Shira yelled back. ''So get over it! You've been using your weak little stump as a handicap for too long and I'm not going to stand for it! Be grateful you're even useful enough for breeding! Do you know what mushers do to dogs unable to mush?''
Steele stared down into the chocolate eyes of the small dog. His own teal orbs flashed with a hidden fear.
Shira stepped closer, craning her neck to stare directly up at him. ''Steele. You may not like me, but I like you. I don't want to see you tossed out like yesterday's news.'' Silence.
''How can I trust you?''
''What?'' Shira asked.
''Breeding is the most shameful business anybody could be thrust into, you know. It's degrading. Knowing that all you are to people is a decent bag of genetics.'' His brows creased. ''How can I trust that you're not going to make a mockery of me afterwards?'' Shira could hear the faint undertone of distress in his voice. She shook her head.
''I don't care what you do, or who you were back then. All I care about is who you are now. And who you are now is actually a pretty decent guy compared to the one you were before, from what I've heard.''
Steele regarded her silently. Shira sighed.
''Nobody's looking at you anymore, Steele. Nobody's judging you, nobody's cheering for you, nobody cares. There's no stress like there was before, when you obviously must have been conformed to be the best. I'm sorry, but it's true. You're... just a normal dog, now.''
Steele's scowl became a gentle frown. His eyes closed, and his expression softened to the point of an almost relaxed bliss.
''...Finally.''
