You find your way home, and hear weeping as soon as you walk in. Your owner is sitting in a kitchen chair. She turns in your direction, but she doesn’t see you. You realize with a chill that her eye problems have caught up with her: she’s blind. A few months later, you’re back in Anchorage, standing proudly on the stage beside your owner as you “graduate” from guide dog training. The applause from the audience feels good, but not as good as when you lead your owner off the stage, making sure she’s safe. You are her eyes now. And it feels even better to live for someone else rather than for yourself. THE END.
