You hear your owner’s tears as she leaves the house. You almost rush back to her, but you stop yourself. She doesn’t need you as much as she thinks she does. And you’re needed here in Nome. When you know she’s gone, you dash out from under the front steps and run towards the house where you know a miracle is taking place. Helpless cries shoot out from inside the shed. Without a word you barrel past the father of the pups who is waiting outside. Inside the mother looks up at you, pain scarring her face. You pad over quickly to her and act as the midwife, calming her with whispered words and commands. You help with the birth, and when it’s finally over, you stand back and admire the six new pups and the radiant mother. You’re more proud of helping deliver those pups than any new fashion accessory. Giving Blade your collar opened up something inside you; now giving your help is your life, in a town you’ve come to love. THE END.
