We weren't even ten months old when Delia and Paul passed on. Mother said they were old. One day they were there, Delia putting kibble in my bowl as my siblings and I came back in from the backyard and the next they weren't. Sandra, from down the street, came and took us to her apartment. I didn't want to leave Delia and Paul's, but Mother said we had too; we wouldn't be safe there anymore. Mother seemed to understand what was going on the  whole time, and I knew she wished she couldn't, so she could always imagine a better way for Delia and Paul to die. She kept us in the dark, my siblings and I, we were too young to know the truth.    It was hard at Sandra's. It was nothing like Delia and Paul's. No matter how much I pretended it was home, my mind kept picturing Delia and Paul's. Sandra wasn't mean, she was actually really kind to us, but we never saw her much to know if she was always that kind. We were only there a week, since that was all the Land Lord would allow us "pets" to stay. Sandra was gone most of the week working at some office a couple of block's over. It didn't pay quite well, so even though Delia and Paul had left enough food and supplies for us, Sandra only gave us rations.   There were seven of us in total, me, my two brothers and four sisters, eight if you count Mother. At nights w slept in a large huddle on Sandra's rug. Mother would tell us stories to help us sleep. Our favorite was the one about how Delia, Paul, Mother and Papa (whom was away in heaven with Delia and Paul, so says Mother) had all met. In the story, Mother told of how she had been Delia's pet, Delia had always called her "Morgan," since Mother explained humans gave you "pet names" when they adopted you. Anyway, Mother than goes on to tell us of how Paul had been out walking Papa ('Alex" was Paul's 'pet name' for him) on the same city street as Delia had been walking Mother. The two caught up with each other and it in short, was a real 101 Dalmatians moment.   We heard that story a good number of the nights we were at Sandra's. The rest of the days that passed by are a mix of random thoughts and memories that were so simple and close to what happened the day before that I'm not even going to try to remember what happened. Anyway, the next Monday, a total of seven days after Delia and Paul's death, Sandra packed us all in her car. All eights of us were lying in the back seats of Sandra's jeep, everyone except Mother was excited. We pups grew fast, so we were all almost like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, all squished together 9and we were brown). When I told Mother this comparison she laughed, but then her face went back to the scowl it had before.   "Where are we going Mama?" the youngest of my sisters, Tori, asked quietly, "Do you think it's the beach? Or maybe, the park? Delia used to-" Tori stopped, we had stopped mentioning Delia and Paul's names since out of all of us, it hurt Mother the most.   Mother gave a low sigh, but didn't answer. "I think everyone could tell we weren't heading to the beach or park. Tori's expression fell from the excitement of maybe going to walk along the coastline (which we had done when Delia was alive) to sadness of making her mother sad. I squeezed through my other siblings whom had started talking again, but not as excitedly as before and made my way to Tori. I am the second oldest and have always had a special place for Tori and Tori a special place for me in our hearts. I put my head over Tori's and calmly said, "It's going to be okay Tori, it's going to be okay."   "Mama's mad at me," Tori's voice whimpered, it wasn't a question.   "No." I shook my head, "She's just stressed, you just happened to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Everyone does it once in their lives."   Tori gave a small smile that took a lot of effort.   I was about to say something else, but the car gave a lurched and the hum of the engine stopped suddenly.  Sandra got out of the car and pulled the door open for us. Mother got out first, but not without giving an odd growl to Sandra. Sandra gave a sad smile and shook her head.   "I'm sorry Morgan," she reached for Mother's head, but Mother snapped hard at Sandra's hand until a river of blood ran down Sandra's sleeve.     "Damn mutt!" Sandra kicked hard at Mother, making Mother give a small whimper and be thrown hard at the cement ground parking lot we were in. I watched with horror as Sandra pulled a small black object from her pocket. She aimed it at Mother and I heard a click and then a soft groan from Mother. I thought I had seen two small balls fly from the object, but maybe it had been my imagination.   Sandra turned toward us, "I took you in, and you attack me. Delia and Paul should of killed you while they could, then they had to go and get themselves a heart attack!" Tori shivered beside me, "What happened to Mama? What happened to Sandra, Dodger?" Tori was right, Sandra had been kind to us all week, why had Mother attacked her and set her on a rampage? I looked at Mother whom was lying in a heap on the ground, she was barely breathing. Sandra walked toward us and before we knew what was happening, she snatched Tori up from our huddle.   "Dodger!" Tori screamed.   I looked up as Sandra pulled Tori close to her eyes. Tori gave a soft whimper and Sandra smiled, "Well now Delia and Paul can see you again!" She held the small object to Tori's head and pulled back the trigger.   "Dodger!"   Now as I mentioned before, my siblings and I (minus Tori whom was the runt) had gotten quite big over the week. I don't know what made me do it, I think it was Tori, but I threw myself hard at Sandra, snapping hard at her leg. The small black object flew from Sandra's hand and shot at Sandra's jeep. "Damn!" Sandra howled. Sandra gave a howl, dropping Tori in the process. I galloped over to my sister, "Are you alright?" Tori nodded her head. "She didn't release the trigger?!" Tori shook her head. "Good."   A low chorus of howls sounded from behind me and I noticed my other siblings were knelt around Mother. A sudden commotion from the building we were parked outside of us, made everyone including us and Sandra turn our heads. A man in a dirty T-shirt and jeans came running out from the large grey building; he seemed to have just turned twenty-one or so from the looks of him.   "What in the hell is going on?!" He shouted gruffly. He spotted Mother on the ground, and ran toward her, making my siblings scatter.   "What a beautiful German shepherd," he awed, then turning toward Sandra he repeated, "What the hell happened?! We could hear the commotion inside!"   "The mutts went insane!" Sandra shouted, inspecting her bleeding leg. I gave a low growl and was proud when Tori along with my sibling joined in.   "Well, what happened to this one?!"  The man held Mother in his arms, "What happened to her?!"   "She went rapid first, and then they--" Sandra pointed as us, "--followed suit. I've had them all week--"   The man held up his hand, "I asked how the Mother--i presume--is so badly injured?" He rose his eyebrow at Sandra, "you know Miss--" he had seen the small black object now, its little balls had cracked Sandra's windshield. "Abuse to animals is an evil thing and I’m sure--" He didn’t have to say another word… Before you could have said "Sandra," Sandra was pulling away and out of the parking lot. The man shook his head and spoke into a small microphone on his ear, "Backup." He ran his hands over Mother; I had to keep myself from growling...anyone whom scared Sandra would be better as a friend.   Two other men came running from the building; toward us...they were both in jeans and dirty T-shirts as well. "Well Chris?" one of the new men asked, "What happened?" Chris (the first man) snorted, "Look at the video tape...I have more important things to attend to." He lifted up Mother and my siblings and I followed him as he walked back toward the building. I saw some of my siblings questioning looks to hurt this "Chris," but when they looked to me, i mouthed, "no."   Chris looked from us to Mother, "Don't worry," he said, "She'll be alright..."     (PART TWO COMING SOON)
