The howl of the wolf... Part 1 By: Geothe54wolf The gray wolf pup growled at the russet she-wolf playfully and leapt high into the air aiming for her back, but fell down on the empty frosted-cold ground. The she-wolf was his friend that had been born a couple minutes earlier than him and yet she was still faster! His troubled him deeply what if I’m not as strong as she is in a couple of days? The russet she-wolf whimpered anxiously and nudged him with her little rose-pink nose. Suddenly, the little gray pup jumped to his feet and bowled the startled she-wolf over onto her stomach. He placed a firm front paw on her back and lifted the other up to his chest and howled to the baby-blue sky and scrambled off of her. The she-wolf crouched down in mock-terror and tucked her tail between her legs. Then came a sound and out came a black and white malamute, he snarled, lowering his head and glowering at the two pups, they both cowered, they knew who this was, their mothers had warned them of him, this was Steele, the evil malamute who liked to pick on the weak or small of the pup’s pack, the elders of the pack had told them the story of how a husky-wolf had saved Nome and Steele hated him for ‘stealing his glory’ and he liked to vent out his anger on their pack. The little gray pup let a feral snarl rip through his bared teeth, this snarl wasn’t just the regular growl, this was a growl that came from deep down in his belly, and most of all, his heart. He was in love with the she-wolf beside him, and he would never let anything touch her, especially not this jealous, mangy, old potato sack. The she- wolf whimpered and crouched lower and she nudged the gray pup and whined gesturing towards the comfort of the trees, but, to her dismay, he took no notice, but bunched up his hind legs, preparing to spring at the old dog, the she-wolf thought they might stand a chance, they were both an ok size, but enough to take on a well seasoned sled dog like the legendary Steele? She couldn’t be sure the answer was no, so with every ounce of courage she could muster, she stalked bravely up to stand beside her love. Meanwhile, at the pup’s pack gathering grounds it was chaos, there were wolves scrambling everywhere, sniffing behind every bush, searching for the two missing pups, a deep brown she-wolf bellowed out a howl, silencing every wolf there, this was the pack leader, and so, every wolf lowered into a crouch, although they were still anxiously whimpering and whining, the pack leading barked at them, ordering them to stay calm, and that they would do this in groups instead of on their own, two pairs of parents, who happened to be the pup’s parents, still whimpered. But, the leader took no notice and howled, as she was doing this, the pack split into five groups they looked like this... Back sentry (loud howler) traveled at backàright sentry (sharp eyes and powerful nose) on right sideàleft sentry (same as right) àleader (sturdy legs and has authority over others)... The gray pup started to bristle and with one small grunt of effort he leapt at the old dog, Steele was ready, and as the gray pup advanced, he closed his teeth around the pup’s front leg, the gray pup yelped in surprise and pain, and struggled against the dog’s broad jaws, then out of nowhere, the she-wolf attacked, she was bigger than the gray pup, and Steele was distracted, so, the old dog dropped the injured gray pup on the ground, and they both fell backwards over the cliff of a deep trench. The gray pup was frozen in horror and pain but when he heard the loud thump of bodies hitting the trench floor, he immediately scampered awkwardly over to the trench edge. He looked down, but all he could see was a big motionless lump of black and white fur, that he knew must be Steele, but where was the she-wolf? He paced along the edge of the trench looking for a safe way down and found a narrow little path, just right for his small body. He ran down the trench and stopped halfway when he heard a deep welcoming growl, coming from a cave on his left, he trotted along a ledge to the entrance and saw the she-wolf! He ran forward to rub noses with her and when they broke apart, the gray pup saw a brown-and-cream figure sitting right from the entrance to the cave. The gray pup snarled, but the she- wolf nudged the other pup on the side and crooned, saying this is him! This is balto! The little gray pup seized up in shock and glanced at the she-wolf the she-wolf briefly retold the story of her fall to the gray pup in dog ‘speak’. I was falling through the air at a tremendous speed, everything was flying by so fast, it felt like a nightmare, and I scrunched up, waiting to feel the smash of pain and I closed my eyes all of a sudden, the rush of wind stopped! I had been caught by someone and i looked up, and saw BALTO! I thought it was amazing! How he caught me that fast! Balto, over in the corner still, snickered, anger flared through the gray pup, but almost immediately calmed down, why should he be angry with the one who saved the love of his life? The gray pup growled, asking if Steele was dead, but Balto shook his head, saying no, he’s just knocked out, but you two should stay closer to your parents, I won’t be able to save you a second time! He got up and stalked over to the two pups, do you want me to escort you home? To be continued...
