The Birth of a Hero

A she-wolf wakes up in the night

Her pack asleep, their slumber deep

Assuring she’s in no one’s sight

Into the dark she begins to creep

Walking on a little while

She wonders if she made the right choice

But as she walks she can’t help but smile

As she remembers his comforting voice

Saying:

Come away, come way, with me now

To a place so safe and warm

I promise to make our love endure

And keep our dreams safe from harm

On the outskirts of town he waits for her

By a little sign that read “Welcome to Nome.”

He could see her coming back to him

Like a lover long away from home

She is a bit nervous as she comes closer

She says, “Do you think we’ll be alright?”

But he just smiled and nuzzled her softly

And whispered coaxing her fears to flight

And he whispered:

Come away, come away, with me now

To a place we shall make ours

Our love will last an eternity

When eons become days, and centuries hours

A pair of eyes was on them

As they walked out of his sight

A shady wolf, who loved her not

But, whose heart was full of spite

To see her go away with him

Was simply a disgrace

So when she came back to her home

He met her, face-to-face

And he screamed:

You mongrel, you wretch, you filthy mutt

Have you no sense, what’s wrong with your head

You say you love this common dog

Let’s you love him when you’re dead

He drew in close to kill her

She knew she’d meet her end

But out of the brush her love rushed out

Her life he would defend

He told her “run”, she did not want to

But she ran and stayed on course

Returning only hours later

To find her lover’s lifeless corpse

Where she cried:

Come away, come away, that’s what you said

            Beckoning me into love’s bliss

But now that you lay before me dead

I’ve nothing left, but to wait for death’s kiss

But there was more than she could see

A tiny spark of life unknown

For through this love’s tragedy

She gave birth to his son outside of Nome

She could not go back to her pack

And could not raise him on her own

So she decided to take him to her friends

To leave her son with his father’s own

But as they made there way to new life

Her lover’s killer attacked on the way

And she knew if something was not done quickly

Her son would not live to see another day

And so she took him to the outskirts

To an old, abandoned fishing boat,

And when she made sure he was safely hid

She turned back to face him, and he slit her throat

Her son crawled out to his mother’s form

To find her long gone and deceased

The tears wasted no time in shedding

And seemed like they would never cease

But not a syllable could he whimper

Not a word his mouth did sigh

Not a single word could he utter

All he could do was cry, cry, cry

And he cried

And cried

And cried

Over the place where his mother died

Very sad. You're an exceptional poet. The verses were well written, and you managed to rhyme everything and make it sound amazing! (I have trouble rhyming anything, so hats off to you) Another brilliant description of Balto's early life. ;)
