Old Memories Return Part 3
By Ahura Werewolf
Note: Everything that is written Italic is a flash back or a memory. Also Parker and Jenny will switch from their current identities to that of Balto and Jenna.
The next day Parker left his apartment early deciding to take a stroll through the park. The morning was a little cold from the previous days rain, a thin layer of mist covered the ground as it gently made it’s way through the trees. As he rounded the corner leading to the monument he spotted Jenny standing before it. She was reading the inscription then raised her head as she saw him approach. She says “hello fancy seeing you here?” he smiles and says “so what are you doing here?” she says “well yesterday when you and I met something funny happened to me. All these memories entered my mind and I didn‘t know where they came from. But I felt that I should have known you from somewhere I just can‘t seem to recall.”
He shuffles his feet “the same thing happened to me when I looked at this monument” she blinks and says “really” he nods. She says “why do you think this is happening to us?” he shrugs his shoulders and says “but you weren’t the only one that this happened to me” she says “yeah who else?” he replies “when I was visiting my client down at one of the police stations more memories came but not of the same dog this one was male but had the same coat color.” She says “that could have been those dogs son” he says “that is certainly possible” then he says “do you know of any psychics or people who know about past lives” she nods “my friend Tiff owns a shop were she reads palms and tarot cards and trust me she really has a gift and isn’t fake like that John Edwards guy on the TV” he says “is she open at this time of day” she nods her head. He says “can you take me to her” she says “yes and we will both go together.”
They took a cab to the small fortune teller shop. It was a small brick building, there were assorted plants in a window. The sign above read “Inner Eye.” Parker raises his eyebrow and looks at Jenny who blushes looking away. Parker opens the door, a small bell clangs as they enter. Something stirs in the back of the shop and from a bead draped doorway comes Tiff. She is wearing an old faded T-shirt with the barely visible words that reads “Yellowstone.” She has on a pair of hip hugger jeans with a tear in the right knee cap on her head sits perched a New York Yankee ball cap that has been turned backwards. Her hair reminds Parker of a really red carrot that has had a bad hair day. Her eyes are the color the ocean, her face is pale and heart shaped. She looks curiously at him then looks at Jenny. She rushes out from behind the counter and hugs Jenny tightly saying “it has been far to long Jen why don’t you call” Jenny chuckles and says “we only had dinner together yesterday” Tiff lets go and says “oh I forgot but it feels like that happened a lifetime ago.” She turns her attention to Parker and says “I thought I felt something approaching my humble little shop and I was right” Parker looks at her and says “what do you mean?” She replies “I could feel your souls calling for me to answer it’s questions” he backs away and says “my soul?” she nods.
Parker leans back on the balls of his feet. He tightly clutches his jeans saying “What do you mean you could feel my souls call to you?” Tiff says “your soul called to me and it said it wanted to know who you really are but you aren’t the only one I have felt this call with. Just yesterday a young lady probably around sixteen came here and the calling I feel with you was the same as I felt with her. She was most anxious to figure out these dreams she was having about being a wolf and leading a pack in a forest somewhere.” Parker says “I think your nuts and what makes you think I would believe any of this?” Tiff replies “well you must be curious about why you have memories that aren’t yours and why you feel a strong connection to people you have never met” Parker stands there quietly and says “fine I will admit there are something’s that have been happening lately that are strange and I would like to know why.” Tiff turns to Jen and says “unless I am mistaken you have been feeling the same thing right?” she nods and says “it only happens when I am around him” she points at Parker. A large smile appears on her face and Parker says “what’s so funny?” Tiff replies “don’t you get it’ they both shrug their shoulders, Tiff says “both of you must have been lovers in your previous life and by what I felt also dogs or at least one of you was a dog and the other a hybrid” Parker says “which one of us was the dog and the other the hybrid?” Tiff points at Jenny and says “you were the dog specifically a husky” then she points at Parker “you were the hybrid half wolf and half husky.” She then asks “where was it that you first had these visions” Parker replies “by a monument to a dog named Balto” she says “what was written on it?” he says “it told of how the dog had brought medicine to a town in Alaska that was suffering from some type of disease.”
Tiff looks at him and says “I have heard of that before, my cousin goes up to Alaska every year and runs in the Iditarod dog sled race and he explained to me the history of the event.” Parker says “is there any way you can help us understand these memories” she nods and says “yes follow me” they go with her into the back of the store. They enter into a small room, a few book shelves stand against the far wall. On the shelves are books about animal totems and astral projection, a couple of large posters show a Native American standing behind a wolf while the other one shows a black panther. On the floor are a couple of couches and in the center of them is a table with incense. Tiff gestures for Parker to sit on one couch and for Jen to sit on the other. Taking their places at their respective couches Tiff tells them to hold hands when Parker asks why she tells him since they both knew each other in their past life that the connection would be a lot stronger if they held hands. Jen blushes while Parker stares aimlessly at the ceiling. Jenny outstretches her hand and Parker takes hold of it.
Tiff tells them to close their eyes which they do. She then goes over to the book shelf and pulls out a book on past lives. She turns the page and begins to chant. The sound of the chant slow begins to relax both Parker and Jenny. Their thoughts melt away, Parker before slipping into unconsciousness notices that his identity slowly fades away until it is gone. She says “let the past that lives in these two individuals come forth and walk in the world anew.” Parker opens his eyes and looks around he says “where am I?” at the same time Jenny wakes up as well. Parker looks at Jenny then at Tiff saying “who are you and where am I?” she replies “you are in New York City and who do you think you are” he says “my name is Balto and why am I in New York City” she says “Balto, my name is Tiff and what years is it?” he says “1930.” She says “Balto the year isn’t 1930 it is 2009” he stands up and Jenny says “Balto is that really you” he looks at Jenny curiously and says “Jenna is that you” she nods and he says “yes it is me.” The both of them turn looking at Tiff, Balto says “what is going on here why do we look like humans?” Tiff replies “I am afraid that the both of you have been dead for 80 years.” Balto sits back down on the couch he stares at his hands saying “I am dead” a searing pain surges through his head. Something flashes in the back of his mind, “Cold, I am so cold. Looking around he sees the lifeless bodies of his son and the other members of the sled team. Thinking back to what had happened he wondered what had gone wrong. They had been delivering mail to White Mountain when a blizzard set in. The snow was coming down sideways and he could see a foot in front of him. Nothing made any sense, all the scents were mixed up and he could no longer see the trail. All of a sudden the ground disappeared from under him, he crashed all the way down the cliff coming to rest at the bottom. The dim light from the lantern shined over the scene. The musher was slumped next to the sled. While some of the other dogs were moving slightly. His son’s eyes were closed, when he tried to go over to him something went crunch in his back leg. Turning around he saw the pearly white of a bone sticking out. Pain rushed up his spine causing him to gasp. He tried to drag himself over to Kodi but only made it a few feet before he collapsed. He was exhausted, every movement caused him more pain.
Eventually Kodi opened his eyes, he says “Dad are you there?” he replies “yes I am” Kodi looks around and says “what happened, is everyone ok?” he says “I don’t know I am not sure.” Balto is able to see that Kodi has a large gash on his forehead that blood slowly oozes out. As time passes by Kodi’s eyes change, the light of life slips away from them the dullness of death replaces it. Balto slowly loses feeling of his body. He would drift in and out of consciousness always fighting to come back. He looks around, time seems to slow around him then nothingness engulfs him.”
As the vision ends Balto shakes his head and looks around saying “I really did die” tears form in his eyes and Jenna embraces him. She says “it is ok Balto at least we are together again” He looks at Jenna and says “what happened to you?” she replies “I waited for you to return we received a message from White Mountain saying you and the team hadn’t arrived. So I knew something was wrong, a search party was sent out to find you and the missing team. A couple of days passed before the search party returned. They came back with the bodies of some of the team including your’s and Kodi’s. I didn’t know if you were alive or dead but when I approached you I saw that your fur was completely frozen. I uttered your name but you never opened your eyes and I couldn’t hear your heartbeat, it was the same
