Balto (The Revelation)

Chapter 3 – The Race Is Begun

Today was the day. At least, that was Kodi thought about. Yesterday, he had made promise with Reina to show her about his speed. It seemed he was very proud of it. Right now, he trotted at the edge of street, heading to the boiler room. With his smile, he entered the room slowly to find his friends were resting nearby. He then moved closer to them.

“Hi, guys!” he greeted, “How is it going?”

Inside of the room, there were 3 dogs. All of them looked like husky which one of them was brown female, and the rest were brown male and blue male. Even looked like husky, yet the male was a lot bigger than usual.

“Hi, Kodi!” What are you doing?” Kirby, the brown male dog, greeted back, “Don’t expect to deliver again because we’re still in holiday.”

“I know that,” Kodi replied, “Just there were no mails, doesn’t mean we have a holiday.”

“But, Kodi. We need a rest…” Ralph, the blue male one, continued, “Beside, my nails always hurt when I’m running.”

“You’re always hurt, Ralph!” Kirby interrupted, making everyone burst into laughing.

“By the way, Kodi. What makes you come?” Dusty, the brown female dog, suddenly asked, “Do you have a business?”

“Yeah…” Kodi answered, “I wanted you guys to race with me.”

“Race?” Kirby was startled, laughing, “Kodi, you sure have to rest. I will advise you not to run today.”

“Oh, c’mon! I had already promised to her…” Kodi replied back.

“Her? Who is she?” Dusty smiled, “Don’t tell me you already get your girlfriend.”

“Of course, not!” Kodi was taken back, “Listen me. She is a wolf, the one who saved my father. I just want to show her that I’m good at running.”

“For what?” Dusty asked, “You want to attract her?”

“In your dreams…” Kodi chuckled, “She is good at fighting, so I want her to see that I’m better than her. You know, just to prove the dogs are greater than wolves.”

“You got a point, Kodi,” Ralph added.

“So, are you guys in or…” Kodi began leaving, “Just sit down here and wait she wins.”

Everyone began looking each other. They knew their friend had a good point to deal. Even they wanted to rest badly, yet the desire of showing their kind was more powerful was so tempting. They then finally decided to come in, seeing how Kodi’s plan worked out. Quickly, they left the warm of the boiler room to the cold outside, heading faster to Balto’s home at outskirt.

“Hey, Kodi!” Kirby called, “What she looks like?”

          “You will see…” Kodi replied.

Soon, they arrived at their destination. Balto’s home never changed, even just a little bit. The broken woods were still there, crossing the entire living place. But, what they were looking for wasn’t it. Instead of seeing Balto, Kodi and the rest of gang noticed a female white wolf was laying down right at beside the entrance of boat. It seemed Reina was always there, guarding the place.

“Hi…” Kodi greeted at first, “Like I promised, I’II show you what I’m made of.”

“Hi there too…” Reina greeted back, noticing some unknown friends with him, “Who are they?”

“They’re my friends,” Kodi answered, motioning to each of them, “They’re Dusty, Ralph, and Kirby. So, guys… This is Reina.”

          “Hello, everyone…” Reina smiled.

“Okay, enough of talking…” Kodi began impatient, “Let’s get down to the business!”

“Hey, calm down, Kodi!” Ralph exclaimed, “You’re so impatient when it comes to race.”

“If I wait any longer, my legs will be itchy…” Kodi replied, making everyone at there fell in laughing.

“You know…” Dusty whispered to Reina, “He loves so much running.”

“Well…” Reina smiled, looking at Kodi, “I can see that.”

“Okay, then…” Kodi announced suddenly, “Let’s race! The one who reach that distance rock is the winner.”

All of them looked where Kodi had motioned. They could see a solid rock was there about 200 meters from them. Even the target was far, yet for Kodi, this was just a piece of cake. Everyone then set their foot, ready to launch themselves at ground. One by one was preparing the speed that they would achieve, except Reina who was still sitting and watching them.

“You don’t want to race too?” Kodi asked, looking at Reina.

“Me?” Reina seemed confused, “Should I join too?”

“Of course…” Kirby answered, “It’s not fun just sitting there, watching Kodi runs and stumbled.”

“Hey, I heard that!” Kodi replied, and then back to Reina, “Join us?”

At first, Reina was hesitated. She never really went into race. Slowly then, she joined them, placing her foot on what they thought as the start line. The time slowly counted down.

          “3…2…1…” Kodi counted, “Go!”

The dogs suddenly pushed their own foot, launching themselves into a race. They ran faster than usual, heading to single rock in front of them. At first, Kodi was on head, followed by Kirby, Dusty, and Ralph. They rushed quickly, leaving Reina behind.

          “Yeah…”Kodi thought, “I beat her.”

Meanwhile the dogs had been far, slowly but sure, the white wolf was chasing them. One by one, she passed all of them, except Kodi. She the began speeding up, going closer and closer to the running red husky until finally, Kodi noticed she was running beside him.

“You’re quite good runner…” Reina started, smiling.

“Ha! You don’t see my speed yet…” Kodi replied.

At that point, they had already reached half of the race, just a few more of hundred meters. Kodi used everything he had. He rushed like he never did, but Reina still could come up with him, even began passing him. Slowly, Reina was on head, leaving Kodi and the rest far away. Even Kodi pumped his muscle so hard, the white wolf rushed even more far. He felt hopeless, useless when Reina had already got there. He then stopped when he got there, followed by his friends. The dogs were panting hard, but Reina seemed fine enough.

“Wow! You’re so fast!” Kirby started, “You even beat Kodi.”

“Yeah…” Dusty added, “I bet Kodi must soon face his new rival.”

          “He sure must,” Ralph continued.

          “Thank you…” Reina just smiled.

“Hey, it’s not over yet…” Kodi suddenly interrupted, “How about going back to the boat?”

“Again!?” Ralph shouted, “Oh… I’m better staying here.”
