Author's Note : This fic was inspired - in a way - from a Linkin' Park song : Numb (obviously).  It was written in just one day, being a "quick fics" just to keep me writing.  The main point of this fic was to actually put my emotions and everything to something semi-useful.

The names of the two characters - as you might be able to see - aren't English, but Arabic and Italian; "Farah" being Arabic for "joy" and "Orfeo" being Italian for "darkness of night".

This fic has been rated PG-13 for more "mature" content.  While there is no cussing or a large amount of violence, there is a character that does self harm to them self.  So if you do not like scenarios like that, you cannot say you weren't told so.

A young lone she-wolf walked slowly through the snow covered woods, her head hanging low.  The bitter wind blew at her light grey and black coat, causing a shiver to run down her spine.  She clamped her teal colored eyes shut as tears started to form, wishing for them to either go away or just all run out.

As she glanced around her surroundings, she spotted a small clearing, illuminated by the shine of the full moon.  Sighing slightly, she made her way over to it, making sure there were no other creatures around besides the lone owl, calling out to its mate a few trees away.

Sitting alone in the moonlight, her fur appeared to be almost white.  Her tail gently was curled around her body, trying to help hold back a shiver.  Looking into the sky, she felt a tear slowly slip out of her teal eyes and hit the snowy ground beneath her.  Thoughts of how she had gotten to where she was flooded back to her.

---------------------

The young she-wolf sat atop a hill, gazing out across the rolling snow covered landscape before her.  This was where she always came to day dream; as well as to get away from the pack of which she reluctantly called her “family”.  None of them actually accepted her for the way she was but instead wanted her to become exactly like them – a ‘normal’ wolf as they would put it.

“Farah!” a male’s voice called out, anger over flowing it.

She winced as she heard her name called.  Slowly standing to her light grey paws, she turned to see a much larger wolf than her.  His thick black fur and dark piercing yellow eyes made him look even more menacing.

“Yes… Orfeo?” Farah asked, her tail tucked under her hind legs and up against her stomach.

He growled, showing his brilliant white teeth clashing against his black fur, regarding the smaller female.  “What have we told you about just wandering off to this … stupid hill?”

Farah kept her teal eyes averted from her leader’s as she crept forward, touching his muzzle with hers, trying to show him her submission.  “I'm sorry, sir…  I just had to come up here to clear my head a little.”

Orfeo snapped at her, fire blazing in his eyes.  “At the rate you are going, you’re not going to be around long enough to have to ‘clear your head’.  You are supposed to be helping the pack.  Not wasting your time here!”  He twisted his expression into a smirk.  “Or have you forgotten the only reason you are here still?”

The light grey she-wolf backed up a few steps, shaking her head.

“The only reason I allowed you to stay with this pack is because of your mother.  But now that she’s dead there is nothing that can make me keep you here.”

As the large male reminded Farah of her mother’s death, she felt that a bullet had just ripped through her.  She bit the inside of her mouth, attempting to hold back the hot tears that were trying to break free.  She turned her head slightly, wishing that Orfeo would just go away and leave her be, but at the same time she knew he wouldn’t.  He was determined to drive her out of the pack.  Or worse.  She knew he would have no greater pleasure then leading her to her death one way or another.

Taking a deep breath, she spun around to face him.  “I’ve tried to make you happy!” she barked, her voice betraying the fear she felt.  “I’ve tried to fit in and be what you wanted me to be!  But I cannot change who I am!”  She gulped down more air, not caring about the tears streaming down her face.  “Anymore, though, I don’t even know what you are expecting from me.  I'm tired of it now…  I'm done, Orfeo.”

The black male looked taken aback at her outburst.  Never had he expected Farah would reach her breaking point so quickly.  He quickly got over his surprise and took a few steps toward her, backing the she-wolf against a tree, his teeth inches away from her muzzle.  He could smell her fear.  It almost made him laugh, how she was nothing like her mother.

“If you don’t like things here, leave,” he said bluntly.  “There is nothing keeping you here.”

Farah stared him right in the eyes for the first time, anger coming to the surface.  For the first time, she didn’t care what he would do to her.  She didn’t care if he killed her or not.  In a way, she was surprised to realize she almost hoped he did.  Then it would be over.  She wouldn’t have to worry about anything ever again.  The pack would be better off.  She would finally be with her mother again.  Everyone would be happier.

Coming back to reality, the she-wolf growled softly, shoving the large male away from her, tensing, ready to be forced to the ground or back against the tree.  But nothing happened.  He stood a few feet away from her, his eyes narrowed and his teeth still barred.  Farah could tell he would love to attack her and kill her now, but for some reason he wasn’t.

Deciding she should take advantage of the situation, she spun around and ran as fast as her paws could carry her.  She ran from Orfeo.  She ran from the pack.  She ran from her pain.  She ran from herself.

---------------------

“I can’t believe it…” she whispered out loud.  She shut her eyes again, forcing yet another tear to fall.  With a sad sigh, Farah stood to her paws.  Walking out of the clearing, the only sound she could hear was the soft crunch of snow under her paw pads as she slowly trudged back into the trees.

As she walked forward, she fell over a rock concealed by the snow.  If it hurt, she couldn’t even tell.  Standing back to her paws and shaking the snow off of her fur, she glanced at the rock again.  After a few moments, she noticed a slight throbbing in her right leg.  Walking back a few paces, she tripped over the rock again, falling to the ground once more.  This time the pain seemed to come quicker, but it still wasn’t much.

She glanced at her right leg, trying to figure out what had made her want to hurt it again.  Shaking her head slightly, she continued forward, not bothering to keep her full weight off of the leg.  With each throb, it seemed a little of the hurt she had been feeling disappeared.

At the edge of a row of trees, there was another small clearing.  Farah made her way over to it, still trying to sort through her thoughts all mixed up in her mind.  Making sure there was no one around, she laid down, giving her leg another quick glance.

A thought quickly dashed across her mind.  Slowly, she picked her left paw off the ground and set it on her right leg.  Taking a slow and steady breath, she began to push down with her claw, barely feeling it dig into her skin.  The only way she knew for sure it was, was from the blood that slowly surfaced.

She was surprised that it didn’t hurt.  Part of her brain told her it should, but another part told her it didn’t.  Farah pushed a little harder, wincing only from the expectation of pain; but it didn’t come.  After a few more minutes, a reason why came to her.  She had become numb to pain.  After all of it that she had felt lately, it just seemed it was no longer there.

Farah sighed, shifting herself.  The snow under her right leg was a crimson color from her blood.  She didn’t care, though.  It didn’t seem real to her, anyway.  The past weeks had seemed like a never ending nightmare with no end in sight.

“I wish I could just see my mother one last time…” Farah said to herself.  Her mother had been the one thing keeping her sane; had kept her from doing what she had just done.  Her mother had kept her safe from Orfeo as well as the rest of the pack.  It was only because of her that Farah had even been allowed to be a part of the pack – not that she had even wanted that.  But her mother was gone.  And with her mother gone, so was her anchor in life; the thing keeping her held down.

Impatiently, she let out a huff.  She was hungry, but had no will to hunt.  Even if she had a will to hunt for food, she knew she wouldn’t be able to catch anything.  Farah had been the worst hunter in the pack.  She couldn’t even help fall a sickly caribou.  It wasn’t like any of that mattered anymore.  She was done with the pack.  Done with everything.

Closing her teal eyes again, she let her mind drift to some far off place.  A warmth seemed to envelope her as the sound of her mother’s voice reached her ears.  But she knew it wasn’t really her mother, just a trick of the wind still blowing around
