Old Memories Return

By Ahura Werewolf

The idea for this story came to me some years ago. At first I was hesitant to even attempt to write it because it seemed so unusual. But eventually it convinced me that it was ready to be written and I agreed so enjoy this one of a kind story.

Chapter One: Back To The Office

The sky was rather grey with a slight overcast. There was hardly any sunlight so everything looked rather dull. Cars rushed past to unknown locations except known by those who were heading to them. It was the usual rush of city life, so many comings and goings one could get lost in the fury of activity. The subway was packed and he didn’t feel like taking it while being crushed like sardines in a can. So I decided to take a short cut through Central Park to get to my office on time.

Even with this inclement weather it didn’t seem to phase anyone. Tourists held umbrellas tightly in their hands while watching the street performers fascinating acts. The rain started to make me feel like a drowned rat so I increased my pace. He watched as a mother and her daughter passed. The daughters hand was tightly wrapped around her mother’s this reminded me of when my own mother brought me to the local carnival so many years ago. Something was telling me that today was different and he didn’t know why? Was it the coffee he had this morning before he left home that was making him feel this way. He silently shrugged my shoulders wondering what was the cause of this. He took a different path than the one he would normally take. The sounds of the city just seemed to melt away as I entered into this area I had never been before, as he rounded the corner a large statue came into view. Stopping in front of it, he read the plaque. “Dedicated to the Indomitable spirit of the sled dogs. That relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, treacherous waters, through artic blizzards from Nenna to the relief of stricken Nome in the winter of 1925. Endurance Fidelity Intelligence.”

This was an interesting monument alright, most you see are dedicated to some war or individual but never a dog. On top a heavily harnessed husky with it’s tongue hanging out as if it were panting stood frozen in time. While regarding this unusual monument, flashes of memories entered my head. It was like watching a movie that wasn’t of your memories and certainly nothing that he ever recalled.

A white wolf stood before me he felt as thought he might as well give up and let the winter cold cover him. But this wolf held his gaze then disappeared. This was followed by a beautiful red husky with deep amber eyes smiling at him. He felt as though he should know here but he had never encountered a dog like this. Eventually the torrent of memories subsided and he shook his head saying “what the heck was all that about?” By this time so tourists were passing by admiring the monument then looking curiously at the silly man talking to himself. He heard one of them say “my aunt told us New Yorkers were crazy I just never expected her to be right.” He chuckled thinking “you have no idea.”

Taking one last look at the monument he left wondering what had just occurred to him. When he arrived at his office a few minutes later he opened the door. As usual the secretary Peggy with her large head of dark brown hair. Looking up from her computer screen she says “Hello Mr. Jones a fine day today isn’t it?”

“Really I thought it was rather a wet day”

“well it is but it won’t last” she replies. He shrugged his shoulders and headed to upstairs to his office. He own a small law firm, it wasn’t exactly his first choice of work when I graduated from high school he wanted to be a teacher but after he was mugged at gun point he went into the law practice. Originally he started off as a wide eyed idealist but after awhile he lost that point of view.

He had many clients and he always made sure that he worked with those who were in the lower classes of society or that is how society had deemed them. Sometimes when his clients could pay for anything he didn’t charge them for his services. Around the law circles he gained the reputation of a crusader for the weak and under privileged. This suited him just fine, he got a great deal of satisfaction helping people who needed him. Sitting in his overly large charge he turned on the computer and looked at the stack of folders on his desk. Sighing he grabbed the one on top. Opening it he saw the mug shot of a young man he was in custody for petty theft. His name was Ben Leclair he was sixteen. Apparently he had been caught for trying to lift an Ipod from a store but as he went for it he knocked over a large shelf of digital cameras and the store manager saw what he was doing and immediately phone the police. The weird thing was he didn’t try to run but the other two who were with him did. The kid had three prior arrests one for assault of a classmate and the other two for breaking and entering.

He said to himself “well this aught to be a pretty open and shut case.” Just than the phone rang. The caller ID showed his fiance’s cell phone number. He reluctantly picked up the phone. Her voice crackles through the static saying “Hi hunny”

“Hey Liz what’s up”

She replies “I was wondering if you wanted to go out to night to eat”

“I don’t know I have a lot of work to do”

“You always have a lot of work to do can’t you take the day off or something”

He shook his head no saying “you know I can’t do that” she replies “So I want you to bring me out tonight” he replied “I will think about it but for now I am unsure” he heard her sigh then she says “well goodbye”

“Goodbye.” He hang up the phone. His  mind wandered back to those memories of that experience in the park. He wondered why they would come and what had triggered them to come. Meanwhile across the city a women with red hair stepped out of her apartment and made her way down the street. Little did they both know that their lives would soon cross in ways they both never expected.
