“I was so worried about you,” Maverick said, rubbing his face on her hers.

“Who are you?” Balto and Jenna seemed to ask in unison.

“I'm Maverick. I'm, uh...”

“He wants to be my mate,” Onyx said, her spunk returning. “And I want to be his.”

He smiled as Balto and Jenna looked at each other for words. Finally Balto found something to say.

“That's great news, Onyx...I don't even know how to tell you how happy I am.”

“Me too,” replied Jenna. “I was hoping you'd find someone soon. There's one down. Now, we just have to find someone for Aleu.”

“Oh, gosh! Don't even make me bring up Aleu,” growled Onyx.

“Oh, I love you,” stated Maverick.

“I love you too.”

“NO!” came a voice from the opposite end of the yard. Jasper lunged again, grabbing Onyx by the throat, shaking her. Jenna and Balto's expressions turned upside down, both too stunned to help. Maverick was the only one who hadn't lost consciousness. Grabbing Jasper's throat, forcing him to release Onyx, he swung him around, throwing him off balance into a snowdrift.

Onyx coughed for breath for a moment, then mustered up her courage and swung into Jasper again. Like hitting a nail with a hammer, Jasper pushed her aside. Lunging for Maverick, who was a few yards away, he put his speed into full gear. Just dodging Jasper, Maverick moved out of the way. Jasper sailed through the air, headed right toward a big, sharp rock.

“Jasper!” cried Onyx the instant he hit the rock. Everyone standing around was completely silent. Jasper did not get up.
