Balto’s Surprise Litter.
Part two.
Balto was going after Orenda, hoping she didn’t go too far. “Orenda! Orenda! Where are you?” Balto said with fear in his voice, but then he heard something crept up behind him. It was Orenda. “I’m right here Dad.” She said, looking kind of confused. Balto turned around too face her, feeling relieved that she didn’t run away. “I thought you ran away, like your older sister Aleu did. She was irritated when she found out, but then she found her home…” “I didn’t run away. I woke up this early morning to look at this thing. I studied it, but I have no clue what it is.” Orenda said, still sounded confused with a frown on her fluffy, white, furred face. Balto cocked his head, and then said, “Can you show me this ‘thing’.” Orenda nodded, saying, “Yeah, it’s over by the outskirts of Nome though. I will show you now.” Balto followed his young, curious daughter to the place she lead them. Then, right in front of them was a huge totem pole, standing tall and proud. Orenda circle it, and then replied, “What is it dad?” Balto chuckled at his daughter’s question, knowing that it was just a totem pole with carved animals on it. “That, Orenda, is a totem pole. Totem poles tell stories about every animal on there, and why they are so important and what their meaning is.” Orenda nodded, and she repeated the word “totem pole” under her breath. “So why is this totem pole confusing to you?” Balto asked his daughter, and Orenda replied back, “In my dream, I saw the totem pole in front of me. All the animals came alive from the carvings, and there were whispering voices all around me. I couldn’t make up what the voices were, but it was weird listening to them.” Balto nodded his head, seeming confused of what her dreams meant. “So, you’re not going to run off, are you?” Balto said, still hoping that she won’t. “Well, why would I run off? There’s nothing to do out there in the wilderness.” Orenda replied as she nuzzled her father. After visiting the “mysterious” totem pole, the two head back to the boat.
Dark clouds loomed over Orenda. The totem pole was grounded in front of her, towering like a giant. Then, harsh wind blew in, and lightning struck the totem pole, leaving flames all over it. Then, one by one, each animal came alive. The raven, fox, wolverine, bear, caribou, and last, the wolf. Every animal circled her and one animal stepped up to her, the wolf. It was white furred like her, and it howled, trying to send a message to her. Orenda cocked her head, wondering if she should howl too. Then, Orenda howled with the white wolf, but then the dream was interrupted. She opened her eyes and saw that her father was snoring in the corner of the boat. But what awoken her from her dream? She got up, and walked around the boat, until she sniffed the air a couple of times. Something was near, but she didn’t know what it was. So she gotten out of the boat and walked over to the totem pole again. She studied all the animals, and she heard some whispers behind her. Orenda turned around quickly, and she saw a white wolf behind her. She stood frozen still, and the wolf walked up to her. “I see you are still curious about this ‘totem’ pole.” Orenda nodded slowly, and the white wolf sat next to her. “I’m Aniu, and who are you?” Orenda just kept on starring, but finally said, “I’m Orenda.” Aniu smiled, and replied back, “Orenda means ‘spirit’, and you have a wild one.” Orenda had her eyes wide- open. “A wild one?” Aniu nodded with a soft smile. “You sure do. And with a wild spirit, you need to start an adventure.” Orenda glanced at the white wolf, and then looked down at her paws. “An adventure of what?” Orenda said confusingly, but the white wolf was gone. Orenda looked every around the totem pole, but Aniu wasn’t anywhere to be seen. “Aniu! Where are you?!” Orenda shouted through the cold, morning air. Nothing was said, and Orenda headed back toward the boat where her father was sleeping happily.
By afternoon, Orenda went into town just to check up on her mother. Down to last house on the block, Orenda leaped on top of the roof and peaked through the window. “Mom…. Where are you?” she said in a sluggish kind of voice. No one responded. Orenda then flicked her tail and jumped off the roof, sniffing out for her mother. All day she kept trying to find her, until she saw her walking with her older brother, Kodiak. “Mom!” she said as she ran to Jenna, giving her a nuzzle. “Hi Orenda. What have you been up to lately?” Jenna said to her younger daughter. “Oh, nothing. I was trying to find you all afternoon.” Jenna nodded, and she began to walk with Kodi again, so Orenda thought she could join the two. Her brother Kodi would take his glaring eyes at her, for maybe it was the way she looked. Jenna heard her name being called by Rosie, so she said, “Bye you too. Don’t get into any trouble.” Then the mother trotted off toward her owner’s house. Kodi just turned around, glaring at her still. “Why are you staring at me?” she said as her ears pricked down. “You look different from the rest of town. You don’t belong here. I bet you’re not even worth like a sled dog, or even make it on the sled team.” This made Orenda frustrated. “I bet I can beat you in a sled dog race older brother! Heck, I’m going to join the team!” Kodi bared his teeth. “You can’t even run fast!” “You want to have a bet?” Orenda said as she flicked her soft, snow fur in his face. “Yeah, I would like a bet. How about this; who ever makes it to White Mountain first and back is the fastest. The loser will have to run away forever, and never come back.” Orenda looked into his brown, gleaming eyes. This sounded dangerous, but dangerous is fun for her. “Yeah, let the bet begin tomorrow at the edge of the town tomorrow at 8:00 in the morning.” Then, after she said that, the two stormed off from each other.
I do not own all the character that belongs to Universal. They respectfully own them.
