Prologue
It was really cold tonight to be summer. The air was thick with ominous, dark clouds, that sent chills through anyone's spine on whoever looked at them. It mostly rested upon a farm in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The farm was full of interesting things. Well, not very interesting, but probably interesting for a Las Vegas city dog that was brought to the farm for the very first time in his or her life. It had sheep, horses, cows, chickens and turkeys, a barn, fences, open space, and maybe a few other dogs, which would usually be Collies or Border Collies, unless it was a breeding farm of huskies.
In the open space on the farm, in a field fenced around, about twenty sheep slept peacefully, being guarded by a Border Collie male, who was laying down and keeping his eyes closed, but ears pricked and alerted.
He was called a watch dog. Watch dogs are dogs that guard something that anything can get their hands on without letting anyone know except a dog on anything. They could be on farms, or in the city. The city ones were usually dangerous though, because they would have to harm a human. Farm dogs didn't have to hurt humans, only wild animals that harmed the smaller animals on the farm.
There was a loud howl in the air, and the border collie opened his eyes. He looked up and listened, his ears twitching, at the interesting noise. It was a wolf.
The young male growled deeply in his throat, and got up, staring closely at a canine larger than him, appearing on top of a hill and looking at him. It climbed down the hill slowly and began to go very close to him.
He lowered his ears back and sunk to the ground when he realized that this was a female, and didn't mean harm. He crouched to the ground and let the new visitor smell and investigate him.
He gulped, and cleared his throat. "Who are you?" he asked. "Shouldn't a pretty wolf like you be with your pack, hunting other animals and leaving other animals here alone?" the male asked, muttering a little.
The female wolf stepped back, and sat down in front of him. "I'm not here for food," the female replied. "I just wanted to see what was so interesting on here to the otehr woves. I don't see anything at all. It's my first time here." She mumbled also. "I'm Ashlee, heir of the Alpha Male and Female of Blue Clan."
"Well, I'm Maxwell, Max for short. I'm heir of no one," the border collie, known as Maxwell, mumbled, and looked away in a bored voice.
Ashlee giggled softly. "Your kind of cute, you know," she flirted a little, but was being honest.
Maxwell glared at Ashlee. He just grunted with digust, and looked away again.
Ashlee frowned, not liking the fact that she was being ignored by a dog. "Listen, Maxwell, or Max," she growled softly. "What I'm here for is, all of my pack members having been getting killed by hunters and predators, and other rival packs, and we're looking for more. My father sent me to look for someone for the night," she explained the best she could. "I think your the right one to be looking for."
Maxwell smiled a little, and cracked a small laugh. "Why do you think so?" he asked, shooting a little attitude. "I'm only a dog, you know. I've got no expierence about wolves and their pack life."
Ashlee just raised a brow at him, and turned serious again. "Please, Maxwell," she begged. "Your our only hope! And my father will kill me if I don't get anyone. The only place I could find a wolf is in someone else's pack, but do you expect me to just walk on someone else's turf and ask an enemy to join us?" Ashlee barked in a serious tone.
"Well, what will my owners think of me when I run off with a stupid-" Maxwell looked at Ashlee and paused when he saw Ashlee making the 'puppy dog' eyes. He smiled a little. She looked kind of cute to him too. Maxwell thought as he looked at his paws. "Well.... okay then.... but if it doesn't go to well, I'll have to go back home," he said, getting up and padding over to Ashlee. "Lead the way, Princess."
Ashlee smirked back. "I knew you'd give up." She rubbed her nose against his, making Maxwell sneeze and glare at her, but she just ignored him. She ran off with the young border collie following behind. 'I hope it does work out,' thought Ashlee, putting on a worried glance as she and him made there may into the woods. 'This will be a rough week for him....'
Stars twinkled above the elder's head, as he stared into the dark of the night, waiting...
He sighed, and lowered his head, looking worried. "Oh, Ashlee," he said softly. "Where are you? It's been too long." He lowered his head again and closed his eyes, and thought. His ears pricked, when he heard paw steps. He looked up and opened his eyes, seeing a female wolf with a Border Collie male.
"Ashlee!" the older wolf male cried. He ran up to her and nuzzled her. "Oh, Ashlee! Where were you?" he asked, sounding frightened.
Ashlee rolled her eyes. "You worry too much, dad," she laughed softly.
Her father opened his eyes, and looked at the Border Collie. He growled at him. "Ashlee, who is this disgusting thing?!" he snapped.
Ashlee stepped back from the older wolf. "Well, you told me to look for some more wolves. Well this was all I could find."
The elder kept growling. "Ashlee, you know that we can't accept dogs in the pack. That's just wrong!"
Ashlee frowned at her father. "Well, this is all I could find, alright?!" Ashlee snapped. "Did you expect me to walk onto someone else's turf and ask an enemy to join us?!"
Ashlee's father glared at her for a moment. His eyes began to soften, when he realized that she was right. He sighed. "Alright, Ashlee," he said softly. "We'll give him one chance. If he does anything wrong for three days, we'll have to do something about him." He glared at the Border Collie, and then walked away.
The Border Collie male, just stared after him. He lowered his ears and whimpered.
Ashlee walked up to him and nuzzled him in a comforting way. "It's alright, Max," she said softly. "You'll get use to it soon." 'I hope so....'
The older wolf watched Maxwell and Ashlee as they padded into his cave and went to rest. He sighed and looked up at the stars again. 'Is this really going to work?' he thought worriedly to himself.
He shook his head. 'What is my father thinking of me now, as he is watching me from up above?' The wolf got up and padded inside the same den Ashlee and Max were sleeping in.
He laid down beside his daughter, and closed his eyes. He opened one and took a peek at Maxwell. He sighed again, and quickly fell asleep.
Chapter One
"Wait, Maxwell! Get back here now!"
Maxwell panted, his tongue hanging out as his feet carried him after a small white furry thing that blended with the snow and had a fluffy ball as a tail.
The rabbit jumped for cover in a hole, making it difficult for the excited pup to get him.
Maxwell growled irritably, and sat down, making a pouty look on his face. He looked up and whimpered when he saw a larger wolf walk up to him.
The wolf sighed, and shook his head. He growled at the dog. "If I told you a million times, I said a million times, don't chase after prey until I order you too!" the wolf scold him. "Your going to need a lot of patience to catch something for your family."
Maxwell snorted and rolled his eyes at him. 'What do you mean, 'family'? This isn't my family. Your only wolves, and I'm just a dumb mutt.' He thought with a mutter.
The wolf sighed again. "Come on, Maxwell," he said, his tone a little softer. "We can try again later." The wolf began to pad away, with Max trailing behind him with an upset body language.
It wasn't too long until they made it to a camp full of other wolves. No dogs of any breed though. Maxwell sat down and watched as the older wolf walked away and left him behind to a den, where no one was aloud unless,it was one of his offspring.
Maxwell growled, when he saw a trio and their leader, a female walking to him.
"Well, well. If it isn't failurewell," the leader mocked, with his three friends snickering annoyingly behind him.
"Go away, Lynnette," Maxwell snapped at her.
"Awe, what's the matter?" Lynnette kept teasing. "Upset because old man Brayden still won't accept you?" The other three kept sharing silent laughs with each other.
Maxwell kept growling, and got to his feet. "I'm warning you, Lynnette!" Maxwell growled even louder, showing his canines.
Lynnette growled at Maxwell, she saw his fangs showing at her. "Oh, so is that a challenge?" Lynnette
