Evolution: Part 1
I could see what was happening, all of it. I could hear the screams of my fellow companions. I could see their blood run off the tables and land on the stone floors in pools. I could smell the wretched scent of burning flesh...
My claws had sunken so deeply into the metal floor of the cage, human hands had to jerk me out harshly, causing my shoulders to go sore. But that didn't matter, they were going to kill me, I knew it. Just like they had to my friends, my family.
As I was strapped to a cold, flat space, I felt something cool wipe on my throat. Before I understood what was happening, a needle had been shoved into my neck. Everything was black after that.
When I awoke, I expected to be dead. Instead, I was laid out on something soft. I couldn't tell what it was, because my sight was gone. I'm blind! I nearly yelled, until I realized there was a rag tied over my face. Near to taking it off, I stopped when I felt my face throb. Better not, my concience said.
So I went back to sleep. These humans obviously didn't want me dead yet, I was safe; for now.
Again I felt myself wake. But by hands. Snarling, I snapped at anything in reach, and my jaws clamped down on something soft, but it tasted horrible. A cloth...which contained the scent of blood. My ears pounded, my paws stung, and I heard yelling all across the room.
"Get him down!"
"How the hell did he wake up?"
"Do something!"
Something told me I was coming to in the middle of some sort of surgery, for everything smelled rather bloody, yet alchohol was in the air somewhere. Not to mention when I bit something, it tasted like rubber. Rubber gloves? Rubber gloves...and blood. My own.
But all the questions racing in my mind came to a halt when something sharp got my neck....and then I was out; again!
I opened my eyes, and saw a darkly lit room. Wait...I opened my eyes! Trying to jump to my feet, I felt paralyzed, and couldn't move an inch. Looking downward, I saw my paws wrapped up in white cloth, with little specks of blood on it.
My gaze traveling, I saw that the room looked more like a...well, a pet hospital. I was lying in a cage, but on soft, warm blankets. Other animals behind bars across from me, on the other side of the room, tried to make either mews or barking noises. But they didn't! The world had gone completely silent!
After nearly panicing, I felt something tight wrapped around my floppy labrador ears. But it hurt...what were these people doing to me? First my eyes, my feet, my ears?! What had I done to human kind, to deserve this?
I was in so much pain, self sympathy, I didn't realize that my eyesight was even better than before I came here.
Suprisingly, they didn't do anything else to me for several days. Every morning a human hand would place a bowl of food and water in my cage, as it did to all the other animal cages. And at the end of the day, it did the same. I still couldn't hear, and my paws weren't useful at all.
I missed my home. With my two, married masters, and their seven year old daughter...My little girl, my best friend...Why couldn't I go home? I hadn't done anything to deserve coming here. The last thing I could remember was playing tug-of-war with the neighborhood dogs, and then men heading towards us with some sort of gun that didn't shoot bullets.
After that, being thrown into a cage and watching my friends die before my eyes. Did I do something wrong...? Did my owners not want me anymore? Suddenly I realized how lucky I was to be alive. How...very, very wrong I was. For what I was to become, I'd rather be dead.
When they took met out of my cage, I resisted by yelping and whimpering. My ears were better, I could hear again, so I noticed how loud and what a fuss I was making. A rough hand shoved a muzzle over my jaw, and I continued to plead in a doggy-like way. I didn't want them to take me into more surgery!
But instead they took me to an examination room, and set me on the table. I hung my head and tucked my tail between my legs, not only in fear. My paws still ached, and they hurt from standing up with all the strength I could muster.
A human who wore some sort of glass over his eyes made me lie down, and began to unwrap the cloth from over my floppy ears. When he finished, my ears sure didn't feel right...I decided they just weren't used to being wrapped up.
He took off the rags over my paws, which had been replaced only once since I had been in surgery. But that one time was when I fell asleep in my cage, so I didn't expect what I saw.
My once small, not very large clawed black paws were large! And the claws hung over so they would make a clanking sound when I walked! Big, black, and shining like blades....
The human saw my once-dark brown eyes widen, almost as if in suprise. He pondered if he should continue the surgery. Not that he cared for me, however. He just wanted to know if I'd live through it.
So of course, I was put through months more of that torture, and didn't even find a mirror to see how I had changed.
Authors Note:
Yes, it was a bit short. In case any of you are wondering, the dog that is in this story is indeed a black labrador who had brown eyes and cute floppy ears...which he doesn't now, but you'll see about that in Part 2.
Can you guess what they are turning him into? You may have a good idea, but it's not exactly right. You're all thinking " wolf! duh! of course! " but nah, not really. And even if they turned him into a wolf, what good would that do?
Oh no, I'm spoiling it. Leave comments please!
