Balto the Puppy

Part Five

*Flashback again is still going on*

The little puppy, Balto, awoken from his nap after the night when he saved his mother’s life with the help of his two sisters; Shine and Takoda. He kept on thinking about them, but Boris woke up, and Balto knew it was time for him to ask questions to see what happened when he was gone. So Balto waited outside the boat for Boris to come, and when he came, he sat right next to Balto.

“Balto, I know what happened with you last night…. About your mother.” Said Boris as he paused to look at Balto’s reaction. Balto pointed his ears down in disappointment, but he wondered on how Boris knew.

“How do you know my mother needed help?” Balto replied in a confusing way.  Boris just grinned at him.

“An old bird told me.” Replied Boris as he headed to go back up the boat. He went to go mop up the floor again. Balto was still confused, but he turned around from the ship wreck and headed toward Nome. He hoped that no one would notice him from yesterday, but it was only Steele who did as usual.

“Balto, we meet again.” Said Steele in his childish, sinister voice. He circled around Balto like he did the night before. Balto just glared at him, and ignored him by turning away, but Steele pounced in front of him.

“You’re not going anywhere yet you mutt!” Steele barked in his voice. He flickered his tail in Balto’s face, and Balto gave a big sneeze.

“Bless you….. Or not!” Steele snickered and smirked at him evilly. Balto again glared at him, and he tried to escape Steele’s trap. But Steele was too fast, and he pounced on top of Balto, giving him a push into the snow. Balto tried to get out of Steele’s force from his paws pushing down his chest into the snow.

“Ughhhh…..” Balto replied as Steele had his paw right above his stomach. Balto was still lying on the ground from Steele’s vigor pushing him down, and when ever he struggled to get up, Steele pushed down on his chest harder, making him go down in the snow more.

“Get off me of me Steele!” Balto replied as he waved his paws to get Steele off of him. Steele ignored more, and he pushed his upper body harder. Balto was having hard time breathing as little air escaped from his mouth, but he gave all his force to knock down Steele.

“I SAID GET OFF ME!” Balto screeched as he knocked down Steele with his hind legs. Steele tripped, and Balto was now towering over him. Steele just smirked at him as he pushed Balto off. Now, it was an official fight. Puppies from all over town gathered around the fight in a circle.

“Steele, Steele, Steele, Steele!” The puppies said as they chant for him to win. Steele just smiled while he showed off his muscles before the fight could start. Balto ignored Steele’s vain, but then he was done showing off all his power.

“Let the fight begin!” shouted one pup in the crowd. Steele kept jumping up and down in front of Balto, but Balto kept backing away from the crazy malamute. Right before Balto could dodge him, Steele ambushed on him again, but Balto rolled Steele off with using his hind legs like before. Steele and Balto both got up at the same time, but an urge of pain ran through Balto’s body from the fall off the hill yesterday. He tried to ignore it, but that only made it worse, because he plunged to the ground by tripping over himself. Laughs filled Balto’s ears as he made the embarrassing fall to the earth’s surface. He got back up again, and tears swelled up in his eyes.

“Are you going to run back home for mommy? Oh wait; you don’t have a mom right now!” Steele said in a babyish voice. He too laughed at Balto.

“Get away from me now, Steele……” Balto said as he paused, but he was interrupted by some one. That some one was Shifter.

“Okay kids, you can go home now. There’s nothing to see here anyway. Besides, Steele, your owner is wondering where you are for training, so if I were you, I would head back home.” Steele rolled his eyes as he headed for sled dog training. He never liked being pushed around from Shifter.

“That pup would never learn……” said Shifter as he gazed when Steele was dragging himself to lessons. Balto just grinned, but Shifter looked down at him in disappointment.

“Balto, I am too surprised that you even wanted to go fight with Steele. You should have walked away from him.” Shifter looked away from him, but Balto was a bit in rage. How could I walk away from him when I tried to, but he kept pouncing on me. It’s called self defense. Balto kept thinking in his thoughts about that, but before he could talk about his story, Shifter again had interrupted.

“Balto, why would you even fight? I thought you were worth more than that. Remember how I said that I judge people on their personalities? Well, I have less trust in you.” Balto became furious at what his idol had just said to him.

“I couldn’t escape from Steele! I was ignoring him, but he kept pouncing on top of me! He pressed down against my chest so hard that I almost stopped breathing for air! You don’t even know what it feels like to be me! You don’t even know what it feels like to be an outsider! YOU also don’t KNOW what it feels like to be WOLF!!!” cried Balto as his eyes filled up with tears. Shifter looked at him in astonish. Never in his life had any one talk to him like that. Balto just frowned heatedly at Shifter, but he walked away from him.

“Balto, wait…..” Shifter said as he hesitated to find more words. Balto wouldn’t listen, so he ignored him. Shifter was becoming farther and farther away from him, and Balto didn’t care if he kept walking to the dangerous, outskirts of Nome by himself. Balto found a tree to go lay under a rest. He lied himself down, and he took a little nap. In his dream, he found himself running to his mother. “Mom! Your back!” he cried when running closer to his mother. It seemed like Balto’s mother was ignoring him, but when he got closer and closer, her figure was changing. When he stood right in front of her, his mother wasn’t there any more. It was Steele towering over him.

“Ahhh!” he cried when Balto woke up. He was breathing heavily from his nightmare. The puppy hybrid had no clue of what to do. Then, a little girl was walking toward the puppy. “Aren’t you soooo cute! Your name is Balto. I only know this because my cousin is Rosie, and she told me everything about you!” The ten year old girl picked him up gently into her arms. Balto snuggled, never having the feeling to be hugged. Her body was warm, and he pressed his head more into her arms. The girl giggled at Balto’s cuteness. As the girl strode to her house, she said in a cheerful voice, “My name is Alex. I am the only child in the family.” The two entered, and only a lady was at the table, which didn’t seem to mind that Alex brought the wolf- pup to her house. All day the two were playing upstairs. The game was dress- up. Alex dressed herself up crazily, and Balto laughed as she put on a floppy hat with a pink feather on him. Balto never knew what it felt like to have someone smile and care for him. At night, Alex let Balto sleep on her bed with her. The two both had good dreams, and Balto never felt this happy before.

Alex and Balto trotted down the beach during the morning. The sun was rising, and the d morning felt great. While Alex was skipping stones, Balto went to the shipwreck where Boris lives. He noticed the Russian goose mopping the floor as usual. “Hey Boris. Sorry I wasn’t home last night, a girl named Alex let me in her house to give me shelter.” Boris looked very tired, and he replied back, “Thank goodness you’re here! I vas vorrying about you! This girl Alex you speak seems like a nice girl. You could live vith her for, but promise to see me once in avhile?” Balto smiled at Boris. “A promise is a promise Boris!” and after saying that, Balto did go visit his first friend all the time everyday. Alex gotten to meet Boris, so she knows him pretty well. At night time, the three would go sit on a hill and watch the beautiful Northern Lights up in the sky. They would be amazed to see all the different colors weaving itself in the night sky with the shiny stars glittering. Sometimes, they would laugh and make up their own constellations.

Alex and Balto were sitting on a hill again at night. She was lying down in the snow, and Balto was lying down right next to her. Boris was at the ship taking a snooze. “Look Balto! You see that shooting star! Let’s make a wish! First, I wish we would always be friends forever!” after Alex made her wish, she hugged Balto very tightly. He too wished they could be friends forever.

A few days later, Alex started to cough very horribly. Balto was becoming worried. Alex’s mother had to take her to the only doctor in town, and Balto followed with them. “Looks like she has a high fever. Whooping Cough I think is the case, but there is no medicine that we have to cure her. All we have to do is pray our hardest and hope she will make it. Ever since Alex was in the hospital for a few days, Balto never left her side. Day and night he would never get up for anything, but then one day a nurse had to check up on Alex. The lady gasped. “Doctor! Doctor! Come in here!” the doctor ran into the room. What they saw was the last event of Alex’s life. Tears came down everyone’s eyes, including Balto. Then, the ten year old bent toward Balto to whisper her last words. “We would always be friends forever. Promise…….?” She mumbled very lowly, but Balto
