The Wolf Inside
By Noblewolf
“Jenna, Jenna wake up!!” prompted Balto. He nudged her again, but she just rolled over and fell back asleep. Balto licked her face, and tried again. “Jenna! You MUST wake up! I have to show you something.
Balto wagged his tail gently, and smiled as Jenna slowly raised her body from the ground. She yawn and stretched, then looked curiously at Balto. “Oh Balto. What is it?”
“Come on.” Balto whispered. He slowly trotted out of the boiler room and led his mate outside.
“Jenna,” he whispered. “Look at the moon.”
Jenna looked at the moon. Nothing out of the ordinary. “Balto, nothing’s changed to it.” Jenna mumbled sleepily.
“No, no…look.” Balto said. Again Jenna looked, and saw it. Within the moon She could make out the shape of a wolfs head. The Northern Lights cause this effect.
“Balto…” she whispered. She felt a strange longing inside, something she has never felt before. Balto stepped out into the snowy ground, closer to the woods.
“Jenna…have you ever howled?” Balto asked her.
“No, I’m not a wolf.”
Balto growled. Balto then smiled, and raised his muzzle. He let out a clear, eerie howl. “Try.” He coaxed Jenna.”
Balto, I do-“ Balto cut her off her sentence with a short little howl. Jenna looked to the moon again, and felt that uncontrollable wild urge again. She couldn’t hold back any longer. She let out the most beautiful howl Balto had ever heard.
Jenna stopped, and felt stunned. “Well, I never felt that felling before, Balto. I felt almost… Wolf.”
Jenna looked to the ground ashamed. “Jenna, don’t be ashamed. We are all part wolf in a way.” He nuzzled her.
Then he whispered, “You sing beautifully.”
“Sing?” said Jenna. “Balto, that was a howl.”
“Yes, but it was singing to our wild brothers.” Jenna smiled. Balto did too. They sang for the rest of the night, the moon shining down brilliantly.
The End
And now my other short story
Noel
The moon was just raising, and billions of stars appeared. The sky slowly transformed from purple to midnight blue. It was snowy and cold outside, but inside the boiler room it was toasty and warm. Jenna rested her head on Balto’s shoulder. The two dogs gazed calmly into the fire before them.
Balto shifted his weight, which woke up the sleepy Jenna. “Oh,” said Balto seeing he had awaken the sleeping husky. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to wake you.”
Jenna smiled warmly, and laughed. “Balto, you worry to much. I’m fine.” She laid back down.
“Jenna,” said Balto suddenly. “How do you think Alue is? I mean, do you think those wolves are treating her Ok? You know, she is half husky and they might not like that.” Balto sounded worried.
Jenna raised her head again, and looked into Balto’s eyes. “Balto,” She whispered soothingly. “Alue is fine. Mist is fine. Dingo is fine. Kira is fine, and Whisper is fine. They are ALL fine. Now, will you please go to sleep?” She rubbed against him lovingly. “Come to think of it,” said Jenna in a strange voice. “I enjoy our pups, and I miss them dearly. We could have more to give to the humans…you know how it makes them happy when they have puppies in their arms.”
She smiled. Balto looked at her curiously. “Jenna … are you saying you want to have pups again?”
Jenna nodded, and said, “Balto, almost every dog in this town has at least three litters…we’ve had one.” Balto smiled at her. She smiled back. They began to nuzzle, and later that night Jenna’s stomach began to grow with new life.
Jenna awoke the next morning, felling very ill. She threw up at least five times, and finally she had to go to the vet’s office. Balto peeked worriedly into the window. The vet was feeling Jenna’s stomach, and shook his head. He turned to Rosie’s dad and said, (although Balto couldn’t hear him) “Has she been breed before?”
Rosie’s dad nodded, saying “Yes, with that stray Balto. We didn’t mean for it to happen…it just did.”
The Doctor sighed, he said “Well its happened again.”
Jenna looked up at Rosie’s dad, expecting him to be happy like the first time. He wasn’t. “Jenna, why did you have to go and do that?” He sounded angry. Jenna whimpered. She didn’t understand.”
You don’t have to worry, said the Doctor. “This one is a miscarriage.” Jenna didn’t understand these words, but could tell by Rosie’s face that she wasn’t going to be having pups. She cried and leaped painfully off the table and out the door to the waiting Balto.
“Oh Balto,” She could hardly get the words out. “They’re…They’re…Dead!” She cried again, and Balto comforted her sadly. “Oh Jenna.”
Jenna went the next morning to have the died puppies removed from her. As the medicine took affect, a single tear escaped her closing eye. After about 30 minute of removing the died pups, the doctor froze. He said “Oh my gosh…” He turned to the waiting owners of Jenna, and in his hands was a live pup.
Just one, Rosie’s dad couldn’t help but smile just a little. Later that day, the medicine wore off, Rosie put the pup in front of Jenna’s nose, and let her smell it. Jenna leaped up, and began licking the pup. “Balto,” she said softly, “What shall e call this angel?”
Balto looked right into the blue eyes of his daughter and said, “Noel.”
“Noel,” repeated Jenna. “My little angel Noel.” She nuzzled the pup, as did Balto.
“I guess miracles do happen…huh dad?” Said little Rosie
Rosie’s dad just smiled, and ruffled the pup’s fur. “Hmm,” He laughed. “Yes, miracles do happen with these two angels.” He petted Jenna and Balto. The parents smiled and nuzzled their pup.
