Balto the Puppy
Part 4
*Flashback is still going on…*
The morning sun shined through the windows of the boat. Balto’s eye lids began to open up carefully, and he saw the bright sun. The little puppy yawned and stretched his legs out. Boris was still sleeping, so Balto decided he would go to town all by himself. When he had arrived at Nome, the town was still quiet as usual in the morning. A warm breeze brushed against his fur, and Balto sniffed once. Then twice, and then a third time he sniffed. The scent was just like his, so he tried to track it down. The wind kept blowing, and continually Balto sniffed over and over again. He kept his nose to the ground the whole time, but he bumped into some one he never met before. He looked up, and he saw a black fur puppy with white paws looking down at him. He smiled at her, but then he sniffed again, and the scent was coming right from her.
“Sorry I accidentally bumped into you…” Balto said as he got up and met eye to eye with the pup girl.
“Oh that’s okay. My sister and I are new in town, but we live on our own.” Said the puppy smiling at him. Balto smiled back at her.
“So what’s your name?” Balto said curiously to the new puppy he had just met.
“My name is Shine. My sister is some where around here. Just hold on for a second. TAKODA!” shouted Shine to her older sister. A white fur pup with black paws and ear tips came running around from the alley.
“Yeah Shine.” Said the other pup looking at her sister.
“Takoda, meet….. Uh, what’s your name? I never asked you.” Said Shine looking toward Balto.
“Um, my name is Balto.” He said looking at Takoda. For some strange reason, Shine and Takoda looked very familiar, like they had already met before. Takoda smiled at Balto.
“What an interesting name.” said Shine with a grin. Balto smiled back at her complement, but then he just remembered about her scent. Her scent smelled just like wolf.
“Err, this might be a strange question, but are you part wolf?” asked Balto inquiringly. He kept on thinking they are, because Takoda and Shine both had the same scent like he did.
Shine and Takoda stared blankly at each other, then to him. “Yes, we are half husky and half wolf? Are you?” asked Takoda looking at him in an oddly way. Balto nodded his head tenderly as in a way of saying yes. Then, the two sisters looked at each other happily, and then wagged their tails together.
“We finally found him sis! We found our brother that mother told us to find!” Balto just stared blankly into space. He always knew he must have brothers or sisters, but also never knew if he would ever find them again.
“So sisters, where is mother?” Balto asked looking toward the two dancing pups.
“Mother needs your help Balto. She is very sick, and she might even die. So she sends the two of us to get you so we can look for medicine all together.” Some tears came down the youngest pup’s face, who which in fact is Shine’s face. Takoda nuzzled her youngest sister, and then looked toward Balto.
“We need your help; Mother needs your help too. So do you know where the medicine is?” Takoda said with some faith in her voice. Balto nodded his head to his sister.
“Follow me, I know where all the medicine is kept.” Said Balto in a whispering voice. Then, he led them toward the boiler room. He opened the door, and surprisingly no one was in there. The door creaked as the three entered in. Then, they went under a little whole that led underneath the only hospital in town. Then, the three crawled for awhile, and saw some light that lead underneath the room.
“Hey! That’s where the doctor keeps all his medicine!” cried Shine as she was jumping up and down.
“Shhhh! We don’t want anyone to catch us.” Whispered the two older siblings.
“Sorry.” Said Shine with a smile in a whispering voice. So the three siblings kept on looking through the gate in the floor that let them see what was going on up there.
“We need to push that gate up so we can sneak in.” said Balto jumping up and down to reach the handle on the wide gate.
“Here, go on my back Takoda. Shine, get on top of Takoda and push the handle on the gate.” Whispered Balto to his two sisters. They both nodded at him and did as they were supposed to. When Shine was at the top, she pushed the handle with her little nose. The gate opened, and no one was in there. Then, Shine jumped off of Takoda and into the room. She held out her paws so Takoda can enter the room like how she did. Takoda leaped off of Balto and held onto Shine’s paws. Takoda wasn’t that heavy, so Shine was able to easily pull her up and into the room. Next, Takoda held out her paws to Balto. Balto pounced very high into the air that he actually was able to catch Takoda’s paws. Takoda pulled Balto very easily just like Shine did to her. Balto shook his fur when he entered the room.
“It feels good to shake your fur.” Balto said as he giggled to his sisters. Shine and Takoda snickered, and they imitated their brother. When they stopped shaking their fur, they investigated the doctor’s office for any medicine for animals.
“How can we read the labels for animal medicine?” said Shine looking toward Balto. He just grinned at his two sisters.
“You’re lucky I am surrounded by humans sometimes, because I can read their writing.” Balto replied as he was climbing up on some shelves.
“Is there any animal medicine up there?” Takoda said looking up to her older brother. Balto was scanning through, but then a pill bottle caught his eye. This is what the bottle had on it; SICKNESS CURE FOR ALL ANIMALS. A FEVER, COLD, OR FLU WILL WORK BEST.
“What is mother sick of?” cried Balto to his sister Takoda.
“She has the flu.” Replied Takoda as she was pacing around the office. Balto grabbed the medicine into his mouth. Right before he could jump off the counter and shelves, the office door opened. The three all knew they were in trouble. A man walked in and gasped.
“GET OUT OF HERE YOU THEIVES!” He said chasing Balto, Shine, and Takoda out of the office doors. Balto jumped off the counter and landed on the man’s head. The man screamed and shouted with his hands waving hysterically. Then, Balto leaped off the man’s head and headed toward the door. Everyone in the one room hospital started to shout at the three wolf-pups. One nurse grabbed the broom and started to shoo off the siblings. The three ran out of the hospital door and into the allies.
“We better hurry to give this to mother, because they are right behind us now.” Takoda replied with a running start. Shine turned around and saw some humans right on there tracks.
“Let’s go now!” said Shine leading the way. Balto followed his two sisters. The medicine bottle was still dangling in his mouth. Right before Balto reached the outskirts of Nome; Steele pounced on top of him out of no where.
“Where are you going, Balto!” said Steele as he spat on him. Balto shook his nose to get the slime dripping from his face. Then, Balto noticed the medicine flew out of his mouth and onto the snow.
“I have to give my mother medicine, so get OFF!” cried Balto, pushing Steele off him. Steele backed away from him.
“How do you even know your mother is sick?” said Steele in his sly voice. Balto eyed him and gave him a nasty look.
“My sisters told me. The black and white fur pups over there running away from the humans that might catch us soon.” Said Balto as he grabbed the medicine into his mouth from the snow. Steele just smirked at him.
“When you come back, Balto, I will rip you into pieces…….” But Steele was interrupted as Balto kept running and running toward his two sisters. Takoda and Shine slowed down for him, and Balto caught up with them easily.
“Who was that?” replied Shine as she was running toward the forest. Balto couldn’t manage to speak with the bottle in his mouth, but Shine just figured that out.
“Well you could tell me later, but now mom really needs us.” She said to Balto while running in the cold, hard, and icy snow. Takoda was still leading the way, and they had finally reached the forest. It was only afternoon, but the light was completely gone when the three entered the forest.
“Mother is on top of that large hill over there.” Replied Takoda looking the way were the large hill was. Balto just grinned at his sister. When they arrived shortly to the hill, they started to climb on top of it. Of course, they struggled and trudged through the thick snow.
“Errr….” Replied Shine as she was behind the two oldest. Balto finally became in the lead, and he too was having problems climbing up the hill. His feet were becoming frozen, but he still had faith in himself and sisters.
“Balto…..” replied Takoda as she tripped in the snow. Balto looked behind and saw Takoda trying hard to make it.
“Mother is in that cave on the very top.” She said getting up from her weakening legs. Balto nodded, and he forced himself to run in the snow. He tripped a few times, but he always gotten up. When he reached the cave, he saw a white wolf in there. The white wolf was in pain, and her eyes were weakened to open.
“Mom….” Said Balto as he dropped the medicine to her. Luckily, the lid broke off, and a few pills landed right in front of his mother. The white wolf looked up to her son weakly, but she was able to manage to get the pills in her mouth and chew them. Takoda and Shine finally made it to the cave, and they saw their mother eating the pills
