Snowstorm: The Beginning
In the beginning my pack lived deep within a forest of magic. But then we were put under a terrible curse, one that my pack shall never forget. It put us under harsh winters and hot summers. Game became rare when the great Kipchak visited us. He is the source of our pain. He is the reason our pack is feared from others. Because of him, we are now direct descendants of Liona, the grandmother of Balto.
Liona bore two pups as different as day and night. Her son, Kipchak, was Jet Black with piercing yellow eyes. However, as Kipchak grew, Liona saw her son’s temperament as “different” and “harmful.” When Kipchak was old enough, Liona exiled him from her pack. Kipchak then began to travel south.
During his travels Kipchak discovered he had magical powers. “This must be why mother threw me out.” Kipchak thought. (Kipchak didn’t know, however, that his sister had powers too. She was exiled a year after him. She mated with a husky and gave birth to Balto.) Kipchak now had to powers to transport himself, see into the future, and his senses were strengthened. Kipchak could run faster then humans’ trains, hear a field mouse a mile away, and taste a prey’s blood on the wind. He was invincible, although his heart was not.
It was that after a year of traveling and hunting alone, that Kipchak stumbled into my packs territory. He walked up to the alpha, Kark, and asked for a place to rest. Kark kindly told him that he could stay with his pack. Kipchak stayed with and hid his true powers.
Now Kark had a beautiful daughter, Mira, with a pelt as golden as the sun. Her eyes were like the river, a flowing blue. Every male in the pack tried to court her, but when Kipchak saw her they immediately fell in love. Kipchak stayed with the pack and eventually Kipchak and Mira mated. They had three pups, two daughters and one boy. The daughters looked exactly like Mira herself. The boy, however, looked like Kipchak and had an Alpha’s muzzle. The family lived together and was very happy.
A year later, Kipchak had gone with the pack on a hunt. His children were at the den with Mira and Tin Ear, the guard for the day. Kipchak decided to leave the hunt early to go see Mira. He came across his pups playing in the field who said that their mother was down by the stream. Kipchak padded through the trees but when he saw Mira frolicking and licking Tin Ear, Kipchak was enraged and heartbroken. He killed Tin Ear and Mira on the spot and dragged him back to the den. When he saw his daughters and their resemblance to their mother he killed them too.
When the pack returned from the hunt they found the four corpses lying on the ground in front of their cave den. Blood was seeping into the forest floor. Kark found his grandson, Kodak, lying by his mother weeping. “The curse shall come, like father said, the curse shall com,” Kodak mumbled. Then, lightning flashed across the sky as Kipchak appeared to them. It began to pour and Kipchak howled. He looked down from atop the cave den and smiled his crooked smile. Then he recited the curse which is known to all of my pack.
A broken heart cannot be mended,
Decades from now you must all be well defended,
For a year will come without rain,
Lost lives, and much pain,
But a pup may save your pack
And use her powers to defeat the monsters of the nightly black,
the pups pelt is mostly white,
But her spot of black will stop your fright,
She is a part of me,
The one that will set the curse free
With his final words, Kipchak was struck by lightning and killed. The pack mumbled and was very frightened by Kipchak’s words. Kodak was cared for by Kark. A year later Kodak told Kipchak the secrets of the curse. He told Kark who the “monsters of nightly black” were. The monsters happened to be a pack that Kipchak started of seven black alpha wolves. He placed a curse on the pack so that the wolves may live forever. When the cub in the curse was born, the pack would attack my pack. Kodak told Kark that the cub would have the same powers as Kipchak. Kark soon feared for his children and grandchildren and so forth.
Kipchak’s son, Kodak, is my mother’s grandfather, and I am the pup the curse speaks about. I am Snowstorm, the bringer of drought. The birth of me brought back the Night Pack. They feed on wolves and their cubs. No one has defeated them, and now it is up to me. My brother is a traitor who has joined the Night Pack. And my friend, Crimson, does not believe anything I say. How can this go on? The pain that I will endure, the stress the others must face is incomprehensible. I am only a pup. How can I figure this out? It is just the beginning.
