The Secret She Kept Hidden

    “Jenna, I never  thought once this would happen to me.  For a second I thought… I thought I loved you, and you loved me back.  I never know you were seeing someone else, and to top it all off it’s the brother of my evil nemesis.  But who knew lies could destroy our relationship.”  These were the words Balto last said to Jenna as he left her life forever.

October 28, 1926

    It was the start to a very cold winter, or as Jenna’s owner would use to say   the beginning to a freezing summer.  Jenna had just woken up and was on her way to Balto’s boat.  As she was walked she noticed a very skinny dog whimpering at the side of the street.  Jenna decided to help the dog out.  As she came closer she saw the fear in the poor dog’s eyes.  “Get away, I’m warning you!  I’m not afraid to fight!” yelled the male dog. 

    Jenna came closer to the dog.  She could see that his paw was truly wounded.  The street dog growled at her as she took her bandana and wrapped it around his paw.  “Why are you doing this, you should be like most dogs?”
    “Because,” the dog whined as she tightened her bandana around his paw, “ I’m not like most dogs.”
    The dog gave a chuckle and stood up.  This male husky was black and white, his black colored fur made him look absolutely cuddly and soft.  Jenna helped the limping dog to Balto’s boat.  It seemed that Balto was out probably out on another errand with Duke.

    “So, who exactly are you,” Jenna questioned him. “ Your not from here I take it?”
    “Nope, my name is Raphael, I came to this little town of Nome seeking a mate.  I had heard rumors that my ex-mate was living here now.  But not only did I come here for a second chance. No, I came for a fresh start.  I came here from Juneau.  I have a brother somewhere here.”
    “Oh, who is that?” Jenna asked.
    “Steele, a husky named Steele is my brother.” Raphael replied as he took off Jenna’s bandana.
    “My stars, Steele is your brother?  Is Steele a large black and white husky, wearing a collar?  Blue eyes and a really deep voice?” stuttered Jenna.
    “Yup, that’s about Steele.  Wait a minute how in the world did you know that?” wondered Raphael.

    Jenna looked at the creaking wooden floor,” Well, In Nome I would say I’m very well known.  Steele was intending on pursuing me.  But I was the least interested in seeing him.  For me I was very interested in another dog.  Actually, he’s half wolf and half dog.  He was my own admirer form a far.”
    Jenna told Raphael all about Balto and his journey to becoming a hero.  She told him how Balto was an outcast and how Steele hated him just because he’s a half wolf,       

    There was an awkward silence as the two were leaving the boat.  “Wow, I never heard the story of my brother like that.  He truly was a monster.”
    The two kept talking on their way back.  Jenna accidentally slipped on the ice and slipped towards Raphael.  Raphael and Jenna’s noses were touching and then he kissed her.
    Jenna and Raphael said they’re goodbyes and returned to their homes.  At exactly eleven o’ clock Jenna heard sound coming out of her window.  Who was it she asked herself and who would come by her window so late.  She tiptoed her way out of the house just to see Balto sitting down.  He approached a very sleepy Jenna with a very beautiful and fragrant flower in his teeth.  He smiled and nuzzled Jenna.  “Why are you visiting me so late at night?”  Jenna yawned as she took Balto’s gift.
    “I just wanted to see the love of my life.”  A blushing Balto said.

    That night Jenna and Balto took a midnight stroll together.  The only bad part of the date was that Jenna had seen Raphael and Steele approaching them.  Balto noticed Jenna wasn’t paying attention so looked back at the same direction Jenna was looking at.  He saw Steele and walked towards him.  “What are you doing here Steele?” growled Balto.
    “I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d take back what was rightfully mine.  That victory was mine Balto!” an angry Steele yelled.
    Just then Raphael jumped on Balto’s back and took a gruesome bite into Balto’s skin.  Steele just laughed and kept taking his paw and clawing Balto’s face.  Balto fought back and bit Raphael’s leg; in return Raphael bit his arm.  Steele was really angry since Balto just bit his brother that he bit Balto other arm.  Jenna couldn’t do anything she was shocked at what was happening.  Raphael realized Jenna was watching and came towards her.

    “Get away from me.  Why would you do that to my mate!  Why Raphael, why?”  Sobbed Jenna.
    “Don’t you understand, I did this for us so we can be together.  Jenna I love you, and Balto was in the way so I had to get rid of him.” Raphael said.
    “What you did was cruel.  You hurt my only love, what were you planning to do after Balto was out of the picture?” Jenna screamed.
    “I WANT YOU TO FORGET ABOUT HIM!” hollered Raphael.

    Balto coughed and bled.  He turned to Jenna and stood up.  Steele looked at Balto and saw the same hatred he had within himself.  Balto couldn’t barely walk that he collapsed along the way.  “Why would you do this to me.  I heard everything.  I guess I could never be famous and have a good relationship.  What else could I possibly lose.”  Balto quietly whispered.

Jenna collapsed on the floor, crying, wishing she would have never met Raphael or Steele.  Steele laughed as Balto limped into the darkness of night. Wickedly Steele said in an undertone, “ You could never lose what you never had.”
