You dont have to have a pedigree to be something in the world, all you need is the the courage to keep on believing. Thats what my father told me when I was just a pup, and even though I didn't know then what he meant by it, I took it to heart. Those words were the words that echoed in my ears for the rest of my life, and I eventually had the chance to find out what he meant.
My father was a pure wolf, Tall, lean, and full of affection. He met my mother when he was about a year old. She was a dazzling, beautiful blue eyed marvel, as he put it. She was small and delicate, and she looked so misplaced next to my father, but when they were together, you could tell that they were in love and nothing would ever change that.
So here I was, with both Husky and wolf running through my veins, and it confused me. I had the markings of my father, which were brown and grey all mixed in, with an off white chest. When it came down to my eyes though, I definately had my mother's bright saphire blues.
When my father first explained to me, what I was, I didn't know how to take it. I mean, before I had thought I was just like all the other pups of the pack, I was just as tall, just as fast, but something was different, and then my father told me. Micha your part husky.
It wasn't really a shock I mean it's not like mom looked like a wolf anyway, you dont have to be a genius to see that, but when it was said out loud it just made it real for the first time. I didn't know what too think. No one in the pack really treated me differently, it was just a look in thier eye. I mean don't get me wrong, they were all kind and loving and never treated me or my family wrongly. It was just when ever I looked into the eyes of one of my playmates, from the time I was a pup to when we grew a to be young wolfves ourselfeves, there was always that look. The look of your a dog and I"m a wolf, the boundary line that I always felt.
I told my father that I knew already, and life went on, but still it ate at me like a disease, I was never going to truly belong here, with this pack, at least I didn't think I would. I wasn't a wolf, not even a dog really, and that confused me to the point of no end. This had been my home once long ago, but now...
These were the times when my father stood by me the most and I was glad for his instruction. Mom listened as I poured out my problems, and was understand through out my confusion.
Lately though I had been thinking, maybe it would only be better if I left, and figured things out for myself, I just didn't feel right here anymore. When the pack went hunting, I found myself longing to go past our territory, get away, past the trees and see what lay to the horizon.
"Micha!" Rusty called
"Yea?" I asked, not looking up
"Comon, we're all going down to the river, I think Evert's planning on taking on the rapids." He said exictedly
"You go on ahead, I think I'll stay here for while." I said looking up quickly with a smile, but he saw right through it, he had always been a great friend.
He made a signal that said go ahead, we'll catch up, and the others went on ahead. He sat down beside me and smiled, his carefree grin.
"Whats on your mind sport?" He asked
I smiled, he always had some nickname picked out for me too.
"Nothing" I blurted out, trying to sound truthful
"Comon Flash, what is it" He said giving me a playful shove, and I smiled "If you can't tell your best friend, who can you tell?"
"It's just.. I"ve been thinking lately" I stuttered " I've decided I"m leaving the pack." I said looking at him, to my suprise he showed no amazement at all, only smiled and sighed.
" I understand" He said calmly "You know I"m gonna miss you Micha" He said serious for the first time.
I smiled "Yea, I"ll miss you too Rus"
He smiled and then all was quiet " You wanna catch up with the others now?" Rusty chimed in happily trying to break the saddness of the moment before.
"Yea" I said exictedly
When we got to the river everyone was sitting on the bank and Everet had'nt moved either.
"Hey whats goin on?" I asked coming up to them
"I think Evert's chickened out on going on a death trial today" Mac said
" I did not it's just.. Well I forgot how big they were" Evert's said
"O" I said with a sly smile
"We'll do it" Rusty said "Wont we Micha?" He asked coming to my side
I shrugged "Why not one more wild thing!" I smiled and everyone just looked at us like we were crazey, which we were.
The next moment me and Rus were wading out into the rapid of the river, pushing all our weight against the current.
"Hold on tight" Rus screamed to me over the sound of the water. I was on his shoulders for more power against the waves for the both of us.
"You ready?"
"Yea" I screamed back, and we were off.
The rocks hit us left and right, and we went yelling down the bank. The guys follwed and then we came to the waterfall, we went yelling over it, and when I came up, Rus was on the opposite side. The guys had ran down the bank barking wildly as we climbed onto the bank, happy and out of breath.
"Are you guys ok?" They asked
"Yea, that was the funnest thing I"ve ever done in my life" Russ said
We alll walked home and Rus gave details on our events as we passed down the river. I walked along behind them, letting him have all the glory. My mind was heavy as I walked into the den where my parents were sitting together talking. Mother laughed at my Dad's jokes, and still after all these years he was flirting with her. She laughed more and they smiled together. I stood there for a moment just watching them, and wandered if I would ever be so happy, one thing I did know though, I needed the chance to find out....
