Jenna lay inside a shed, in her basket, about to give birth. Balto waited outside the door, tail slowly wagging. Jenna smiled to herself, remembering how surprised Balto had been when she had announced that she was pregnant again. Jenna grunted. The pup was almost out. Then it slid out. Jenna let Rosy and Rosy’s father dry it. “Good girl, Jenna” said Rosy. Jenna sat up and looked at the pup. Then she lay down again. Another puppy was coming. Jenna closed her eyes. She imagined that she was sleeping by a nice warm fire. Relaxing, Jenna felt the puppy slide out. “Well done, Jenna” said Rosy, stroking Jenna’s smooth head. Jenna opened her eyes and saw Rosy’s joyful face. She smiled. After a few minutes, three more puppies were born. Jenna sighed sleepily. “Come on, Balto” said Rosy’s father, letting Balto inside the shed. Balto smiled and walked over to Jenna. “Oh, Jenna, they’re beautiful” he said, licking Jenna’s cheek. Rosy and her father went out and left Jenna with Balto. Then Kodi, Dingo, Saba, Max, and Sophia came in. “Meet your new brothers and sisters!” said Balto. Sophia and Kodi went up to the basket. Dingo, Max, and Saba hung back. “Wow” said Kodi. Then Saba, Max, and Dingo went forward too. “They’re lovely” said Sophia. Balto licked Jenna again. The first pup was like Aleu, but he was red and white. “We’ll call him Jake” said Balto. The next puppy was like Balto, but she was red and cream. “How about Sierra?” said Sophia. The third pup was like Aleu, and he was gray and cream. “Let’s name him Akiak” said Jenna. The fourth puppy was like Jenna, he was bright red and pure white. “I’d like to name him Luke” said Kodi. The last pup was like Balto, but he was dark red and cream, and fat! “How about we call him Nanook?” said Saba. Everyone loved the names.
As Akiak grew up, Balto and Jenna realized that he’d never be accepted, unless he did a great thing like Balto had to do. Steele picked on Akiak the most. “Half-breed!” laughed Steele. Akiak growled, the hackles on his back rising. “Back off, Steele!” he said. Steele chuckled evilly. “Get out of here, wolfy” he said, “You’d better get back to your pack!”. He spat on Akiak’s nose. Just then Balto came over and stepped between them. “Leave him alone, Steele” he growled. Steele laughed and walked off.
One morning, Balto and Akiak went to the races to see who’d be on the sled team. “Dad, can I race?” asked Akiak. Balto sighed. “Ok, but be careful” he said. Akiak ran to the starting line. “Ready, set...” said the man. The gunshot ringed in Akiak’s ears. Stunned, he paused. “Run, Akiak!” yelled Balto. Akiak ran after the huskies. His brother, Jake, looked over at him as Akiak sped up beside him. “Akiak?” he said. Akiak grinned at him and ran on, passing Dingo too. Akiak raced past the other dogs. “Go Akiak!” yelled Balto. Akiak’s heart was pounding. He knew he had to win. Pulling alongside Steele, Akiak turned to look back. “Hey, out of my way!” Steele growled. Akiak sped ahead of the big malamute. He crossed the line, panting hard. “Akiak, how did you learn to run like that?” asked Jake. Akiak grinned. “Well, I’ve been practising lots” he said. Balto ran over and nuzzled Akiak.
Akiak was accepted on the team, and placed as lead dog. “Good luck, Akiak” said Jenna. Akiak smiled. “Marks, set...” said the man. Bang! Akiak leaped forward. “Mush!” he yelled. Everything went well, until they were almost at the finish line. “Mush, mush!” said Akiak. His team was winning! Then he tripped on a rock and fell over. “Arrrggghhh!” yelled a black husky from behind him. Balto gasped. Akiak came down flat on his face. He gave a howl of anger. The huskies smashed in to him from behind. “Whoa!” said the musher. The other team raced past them. Shaking themselves free of the tangle, the huskies got up. Akiak felt tears in his eyes as he stood up. Jenna, Balto, and Sierra came over. “Oh, Akiak, I’m sorry” said Jenna. Akiak turned away. He felt so ashamed and worthless. He had let his team down. “Leave me alone!” he said, running away.
Akiak ran to the forest. He didn’t stop until he reached a cliff. Panting, he sat down. I’ll never be accepted, he thought sadly. He stood up. Why do I even bother to live? He sighed and prepared to jump off the cliff. Suddenly a girly voice from behind him said “Are you new here, wolf?”. Akiak turned, growling. “I’m not a-!” he said. He stopped. A lovely white she-wolf with light purple on her ears and around her blue eyes stood in front of him. “Hi, I’m Lillie” said the wolf. “Uh, hi” said Akiak, “I’m Akiak. But I’m not a wolf”. Lillie smiled. “I’m a husky cross wolf/husky actually” Akiak said. He smiled back at Lillie. “What brings you out here, Akiak?” she asked. Akiak told her the whole story. He spent two days with her. On the third day, Lillie said to Akiak, “You should be going home”. Akiak sighed. “But nobody likes me there” he said. Lillie licked his nose. “I’ll come with you” she said. Akiak nodded. “Ok, I’ll go” he said.
Akiak’s family were pleased to meet Lillie, and they loved Akiak even more than before. Akiak went back to his team. For two weeks they trained in speed and endurance. “Ok, mush!” yelled Akiak, once again racing as lead dog. His team seemed to fly over the ground. They beat the other team by miles. “Yay, Akiak!” shouted Rosy. Akiak stopped. He was unhitched from the sled. Balto, Jenna, Lillie, and all Akiak’s family came to celebrate. All the huskies on Akiak’s team smiled.
A few weeks later, in the boiler room, Lillie announced the good news. “I’m pregnant!” she said. Akiak grinned and licked Lillie all over. Then he ran towards the door to go tell Balto and Jenna. But just then Kodi opened the door. Akiak crashed on top of him. Lillie ran over. Akiak leaped off Kodi. “I’m going to be a dad!” he shouted, speeding over to Balto’s boat. Kodi smiled at Lillie. “I can’t believe that I did that a few days ago” he said, “When Dusty said she was pregnant with my pups”. Lillie sighed and smiled as she watched Akiak talking to Balto. He’ll be a great dad, she thought.
