Ch. 1

“Saydee, your doggie shoe’s untied.”

My sister, Nuell sat on the edge of our bed, grinning at me. Another one of her dumb jokes.

I’m not an idiot. I know better than to look down at my doggie shoe. If I did, she’d slap me or something.

“I’m not falling for that old trick.” I told her.

Momma had just called me and the brat downstairs for a snack. An hour before she had made us go to our room because she couldn’t stand our fighting anymore.

It was impossible not to fight with Nuell.

When it comes to stupid tricks, Nuell never knows when to quit. “I’m not kidding.” She insisted. “Your doggie shoe’s untied. You’re going to trip.”

“Knock it off, Nuell.” I said. I started walking to my bedroom door.

My left front shoe seemed to cling to the floor. I pulled it up with a jerk.

“Yuck!” I’d stepped on something sticky.

I glanced at Nuell. She’s a skinny little squirt with teeth like a wolf, stringy fur and a tail that looks funny.

Everyone says she looks exactly like me. I hate it when they say that. My pure snow white fur is not stringy, for one thing. It’s short and thick. And my teeth are normal sized. No one has ever said I have teeth like a wolf.

I’m a little short for my size, but not skinny.

I do not look like Nuell.

She was watching me, giggling. “You’d better look down at your shoe.” She taunted in her singsong voice.

I glanced down at my shoe. It wasn’t untied, of course. But I’d just stepped on a huge wad of gum. If I had looked down to check my shoelaces, I would’ve seen it.

But Nuell knew I wouldn’t look down. Not if she told me to.

Tricked by Nuell the Nausea again.

“You’re going to SO get it, Nuell.” I grumbled. I tried to grab her, but she dodged out of reach and ran downstairs.

I chased her into the kitchen. She screamed and hid behind my mother.

“Mommy! Hide me! Saydee’s going to get me!” She shrieked.

As if she were scared of me. Fat chance.

“Saydee Warner!” Momma scolded. “Stop chasing your little sister!”

She glanced at my shoe and added, “Is that gum on your shoe? Oh, Saydee, you’re tracking it all over the floor!”

“Nuell made me step on it!” I whined.

Momma frowned. “Do you expect me to believe that? Saydee, you’re lying again.”

            “I am not!” I cried.

Momma shook her head in disgust. “If you’re going to tell a lie, Saydee, at least make it a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very good one.”

            Nuell peeked out behind Momma.

            “Yeah, Saydee.” She whispered.

I growled at her and tried to grab her again, but Momma caught me and quickly got in front of the little termite.

“Saydee Annette Warner! You go up to your room! Now, young lady!” Momma yelled angrily.

I stomped up to my and Nuell’s room. I slammed the door loud enough for the whole earth to hear it.

I got out my doggie iPod and listened to a little bit of music.

“Saydee, come down! Dinner!” Momma called.

“I’m not hungry!” I called back.

“It’s meatloaf! Your favorite!” I absolutely, positively LOVED Momma’s meatloaf. I dashed downstairs.

Daddy came home just before we started eating. I went over to him to nuzzle him, but Nuell the Nausea was quicker than me.

I said hi to him, but he didn’t respond back. I tried to nuzzle him, but he shooed me away.

I felt a stream of tears in my eyes. I let them stream down my face.

“Saydee, why are you crying?” Momma asked, but by the time she had finished, I had already dashed into my and the brat’s room.

I got into bed. I snuggled under the softness of my blanket, crying silently.

“Saydee? Are you awake?” I heard Nuell’s voice ask a couple of hours later.

“Go away. I never want to see you again!” I yelled.

“Listen, Saydee... I just wanted to apologize for earlier. I just got carried away and... I’m sorry.” Nuell apologized.

            I sighed. “Apology accepted.”

“Did you know that tomorrow, Mommy and Daddy are going to Forks, Washington? They’re going to visit Riley, Edward, Bree, Bella and the rest of the Cullens, except the girls.”

“What are they going to do up there with them?” I asked.

“They’re going to play a bit of games and then, Mommy and Daddy are going to take turns racing Riley, Edward, Carlisle, Emmett and Jasper and then, they’re going to eat lunch and then, Mommy and Daddy are going to invite the Cullens, Bree and Riley to LIVE WITH US!! Oh yeah. Dibs on Emmett.” Nuell said.

“Well... if that’s the way you want it, dibs on Bella and Bree.” I challenged.

“Are you... challenging me?” Nuell questioned.

            “Yeah.” I growled.

“Dibs on Emmett AND Jasper.” Nuell said.

“Oh yeah? Dibs on Riley, Carlisle, Edward, Bella AND Bree. Isn’t Riley sexy?”

            “No. Emmett
