Wolf's Rain Two: Part 6

Someone To Call Her Own

Toboe and Rain grew steadily stronger together, including their relationship, which grew even faster. Rowan  would watch how every day the two would talk like they knew each other forever. She was half suprised that Toboe hadn't popped the question yet, even though they weren't ready to be mates until the next year.

Rowan had to push away her jealousy every time they were near each other. Sure, she had boyfriends before, but none were ever exactly loyal. They always ran off and then showed up with a female and pups at their side. Either that, or left her because she was...

Well, she had a bad past with males, so she wouldn't agree to going up to the 'next level' when they tried to make a move on her. Whenever that springtime came near, she was rather touchy and would prefer to be left alone by all of the opposite gender.

But she'd gotten over a little of that 'fear', and this year wished she could have someone to call her very own...

Sighing, Rowan sat down as the small group began to rest. Instead of lying down, Toboe and Rain threw snow clumps and chased at each other like lovestruck pups.

The jealousy grew over only the next hour, until she realized why she was feeling this way. Finally for once, she was a wolf ready to look for a mate and have pups. Rowan knew it happened to all females, but what if she wasn't ready? They were about to make a journey, and she was supposed to look for a mate?

Others in their small pack began to notice...especially the males. Even Toboe looked like he was half drawn to her. Rowan could tell Tsume tried not to get too close, but every now and then she would have to growl for him to back off a bit.

A few days later she was trying to sleep a little later than usual. When she opened an eye, she was suprised. No one had bothered to force her to get up as they usually would. Instead they were laying around like nothing had happened. Except Rain, who looked a bit steamingly at Toboe.

Ever since it was known that Rowan was ready to mate, all the males hadn't spoken to her, and Toboe had stopped playing with Rain as well. Of course Rain didn't understand exactly why he did, but got the basic idea of it.

When they saw the entrance of the familiar old beat up town, Rain's eyes widened. She'd never been away from her territory before. Asking so many questions, Toboe had no choice but to start ignoring Rowan and talk to Rain again.

For some reason Tsume didn't seem so tense when there wasn't two males following Rowan around all the time. Does Tsume like me...? The thought made Rowan blush.

Then something hit the white wolf. If this Hige guy was as bad with females as they had talked about, yes Rowan listened to their talk every once in a while, Rowan was in for some trouble. Since Hige was 'always looking for a girl', she imagined him to be like the jerks she'd been with before.

"...and that used to be a place where all the humans ate food..." Rowan decided to block the two chattering wolf pups out of her mind. She was still worrying about Hige meeting her.

But then an idea came to her. If Hige was flirting around with Rowan too much, maybe a certain wolf would come to her defense? Then again Tsume didn't seem like the type to be 'the hero' with females, so Rowan didn't count on it.

Toboe took off running when the scent of two wolves hit Rowan right in the nose. JEEZE! Did these two OWN the place?! Rain ran right after him and easily caught up, but Tsume kept his own pace a little ahead of Rowan.

"I thought you were good friends with these wolves. Wouldn't you be glad to see them or something?" She wondered aloud.

He replied without looking back. "I don't get over excited, unlike the runt."

Rowan shrugged and followed, but was sure to keep a few yards behind him. Lately she learned that her scent distracted Tsume. Trying not to laugh, Rowan remembered the other day when he walked straight into a tree. All she had done was step up to his side and he nearly broke his nose over it.

Tsume began to speed up just slightly when Rowan pricked her ears, hearing talking, nearly yelling. Peeking around the corner after Tsume went ahead, she spotted a tan and golden wolf staring at Toboe and Rain, then Tsume. A black female by his side blinked with wide eyes.

"Tsume?!" They both yelped.

The grey flicked an ear and just sat down. Toboe dipped his head. "Hige, Blue, this is Rain." He turned to look at Rain, who did something of a quick bow. "Now didn't I tell you I would find everyone? Well of course we still have to find Kiba...but still, it's possible, I've proved that. Why won't you guys come along?"

Hige, who Rowan suspected was the tan and gold one, glanced at Blue. "I...well..." He looked up at Tsume, almost in fear, but more suprise than anything else. "If Blue wants to go, alright." Right when he said it, Blue wagged her tail. Obviously if Hige was going anywhere, this wolf was too. Great, so this guy had a mate? Maybe Rowan should have never worried after all.

Tsume growled. "Good, because we didn't travel all week to find you guys and leave you behind."

"Nice to see you too," Hige smirked. Blue sat down and curled her tail over her paws. "Why don't you guys rest her for a couple days, then we can get moving. You all must be tired-Toboe what are you doing?"

The red wolf was looking around with a tipped head. "Where'd Rowan go?"

"I'm here." Rowan hung her head slightly and only showed her face from around the corner. She was not used to so many wolves. Not at all.

Rain blinked. "Come on, I haven't known you to be shy!"

Rowan rolled her eyes and padded forward, but kept her distance thanks to Hige's stare. His mouth was completely open, the jerk! Gaping straight at her...she should've smacked him.

Blue turned to glare at Hige, looking at him disbelievingly. He'd restrained from staring at Rain, but then again she was a little young to be staring at.

Rowan backed up a little and faced them completely. What made her blush was that now two of the males were staring directly at her. She even saw their tails start to wag!

Rowan dipped her head. "Greetings." And sat down before they could get a look at anything else.

How embarassing...

As it turned out, Rowan and Blue became pretty good friends. Rain joined in their conversations alot, but usually it was just Rowan and Blue. Most of the time Toboe was playing or talking with Rain.

Hige learned to keep his distance from Rowan as soon as he caught scent of her. If he made the wrong move, he might lose Blue forever. He's not as stupid as I would have thought, Rowan decided.

However Tsume talked to absolutely no one. Mostly he watched the clouds, walked around the deserted town, or went to sleep. However much Rowan tried to hide it, she was now the one who couldn't keep her eyes off a wolf.

Blue saw her staring when Tsume was asleep, and poked her. "Whoa, you like him?"

Rowan jerked around with wide eyes. "Me, never!" Though they both laughed at that.

But Blue looked around, then turned back to Rowan when she saw everyone asleep. "So how long have you liked him?"

Rowan flattened an ear. "Well...since I met him, but I never really thought about it until now."

"Well of course, it's obvious why. When you're ready to have pups, it's kind of hard to figure out what's love and what's instinct. Luckily I don't have to make that choice. I already did." Blue flicked an ear.

"You're having Hige's pups and you didn't tell anyone?!" Rowan's eyes widened even more.

Blue shrugged in embarassment. "Well I can't just stay behind. Don't worry, I'll tell them soon."

"I'll keep your secret until then." Rowan promised.

The first night they stayed at the alley, Rowan couldn't sleep. Finally she lifted her head and stood up to leave. Spotting Tsume almost awake, she quickened her pawsteps until she was out of sight.

Rowan sat down by the street light and looked up at the moon. A full moon! That's why she couldn't sleep. Then why were the others soundly at rest? Sighing, the white wolf just flicked the thought away.

She leaned against the pole and nearly fell asleep, before she heard a voice. "Why are you up?"

Whipping around in suprise, she relaxed only slightly when she saw the grey wolf heading towards her. "I can't sleep," she muttered, and looked away when she felt her face grow hot.

Tsume padded over and sat down beside her. Rowan's eyes widened slightly. Whoa...That was the first time he'd done anything like that...

"Me either," He sighed and looked up at the stars. Rowan looked away in embarassment. Feeling a bit uncomfortable, she almost said something, but decided against it.

"I wish I had a friend here..." Rowan sighed, but blinked when she realized she said it aloud.

"You will, they're just a bit reserved. We haven't been in such a big pack for a long time." Tsume flicked an ear, as if that wasn't a wierd comment at all for Rowan to say.

Before Rowan had any control, she began padding down a deserted alley. Suprisingly, the grey followed rather close behind...

Rowan opened a blue eye, the dull morning light waking her up. Suddenly she nearly yelped, and jumped up to find Tsume lying asleep not far from her. In fact, very closely.

Did I...Oh how could I? Rowan pinned her ears back and started heading to the streets on quick paws.

Settling down beside a building far from both allies, she sniffed to be sure. Sighing, she realized Tsume's wolf scent was all over her. What she suspected was true, it was no dream.

Embarassed and humiliated for doing such things with a wolf she barely knew, she tried to get rid of the mixed scents. Finding a small pool of water, she rolled around in it until it was gone, then waited for her to dry off.

Now she needed an excuse, or the wolves would wake up and know why Tsume and Rowan were gone...But there was no way to have an excuse. If she went back, it would be obvious.
