Arctic Wolf
By Sam (Aljan)
Snow…
To some it is a nuisance, an obstacle that can not be avoided…
To others it is paradise…
To the artic wolf, it is a symbol and an advantage
A symbol for what the wolf really is…and a tool to help in the hunt…
When the snow is gone, an arctic wolf is exposed to all…
However, it doesn’t let the disadvantage let him down…
He hunts and kills his prey…protects what is rightfully his…
Guides and raises sons and daughters of his own…
All the while, waiting for the snow to fall…
Then he feels a change in the clouds…
The wind is colder for he can see his own breath before him…
Slowly, a grin appears on his muzzle…
The time…his time…the time of the artic wolf has come…
Snow falls in thousands…
Covering the land and trees with its soft embrace…
The arctic wolf’s pups watch on with wonder…
At their first snow fall…
“Come my children,” said the arctic wolf. “Come and explore the wonders of your symbol and most useful tool for the hunt.”
The pups tumble over each other, each trying to touch the white substance before the other…
With the patience and loving guidance of a mother, the arctic wolf’s mate nuzzled them toward the entrance of the cave…
Thus is the pups’ first time in the snow…
They yipped and pounced on each other laughing as they flung the snow into each other’s faces…
Feeling young once more, the arctic wolf and the she-wolf joined in the play…
They wrestled and tumbled in the snow till the sun was high in the sky…
As the sun set in the west, it looked back where it had watched the arctic wolf family play…
They were in their den now, snuggled close to each other…
If the sun had a face it would’ve smiled upon the family…
As the fireball went to its rest…
The family began to dream…
Of snow…
Family…
Companionship
And love…
