Where do I belong?
By: Aljan (Sam) 2006-Foever
I have seen a bird fly from its nest
Free and happy
Oh do I wonder
What it is like to be free?
For many days have I been here
Here where steel surrounds me
I am not harmed
For I am not a prisoner of war
The blue sky is above me
And the grass is beneath me
The air is clean and the water crystal clear
But why do I wonder: What is it like to be free?
I have been raised here since puphood
Where my sire and dam had been
Long ago have they passed on
I do miss them…
The bird sings again yet so far away
My heart longs to be out where she has flown
The wind that blows on me urges me on even more
When I try to follow my heart I find myself before the thing that has kept me from doing so…
The thing is silver that is wrapped around itself
It goes around the grass and trees of my area
It is higher then I so I cannot leap over it
It goes deep into the ground so I can not dig
It is my guard though lifeless and unmoving
As I see my reflection in the metal bar in front of me
I do wonder: Am I supposed to be here?
Do I belong somewhere else?
I am not alone
Two males and three females live in this enclosure as well
When they hear my thoughts the males scoff and laugh
The other two females do so as well but the other female listens, wonders the same as I
Humans come and go with each passing day
They come, point, and move on
Thus raises the question
Do I belong here?
Is it my purpose to stay here and be looked at?
I hear the bird now, yet so far away it seems to be coming from a dream
Do I belong here where I am fed by creatures not my kind?
Do my children deserve the same fate?
I am a wolf
A wolf who is a prisoner
One who can not escape…for I have already become tame
My future will be the same like that of my dam and sire
Though I am different to our cousins the dogs
I am equal to what they are looked upon in wolf society
I’ve been fed and trained by Man
For I live in a zoo
