Chapter One

I was running.. My tongue hanging out... my breath coming out in shallow huffs....

I was running..

But from whom?

I didn't know.. But for some reason I had to get out of there. My instinct was screaming at me to run and not look back... 

i looked back anyway..

And screamed....

A demon..

Running toward me with fangs bared, he had glowing red eyes..

and he was coming for me..

I tried to move my legs but they wouldn't budge..

I braced myself for the collision..

My eyes flew open. Someone was nudging me gently.

"Wake up little one!"

I recognized that  gentle voice. My mum's beta. My nurse, her name is Brindeclaw. She spoke again in a more hurried voice.

"Quickly little one get up!"

"Wheres mummy?" I whimpered.

"I don't know..but please hurry, we are in great danger!"

i detected some sadness in her voice. I struggled to get up. Then I heard it. Screams. what was happening? Where were my parents?

"Brindleclaw, wheres my dad?"

Brindleclaw chocked back a sob, but didn't answer.

"Be as quick as you can and follow me!" She snapped suddenly.

I did as i was told. I watched in surprise as we headed to the emergency exit tunnel in the back of our cave.

"why are we going here? What's happening?"

"I'll tell you, hurry! Stay behind me and DON'T stop whatever you do!"

I kept close to her. The darkness of the tunnel enveloped us.

"There has been an attack on our pack. We have to get out of here or they will kill us!"

I shivered and chills ran along my spine. Sixth sense was telling me something. But what? I wanted to cry. I did. I tried to control my sobs but they came out anyway.

"Brindle claw w-where a-are my p-parents?" 

Even in the darkness I could see a shiny tear fall down her beautiful brown fur  and hit the ground with a sharp plunk.

Brindle claw stopped and looked at me. her eyes were brimming with tears. That was all I needed to know. Gone. Both of them. She knew I understood the message. My eyes told everything. I started crying all over again.

'I'll take care of you.." She whispered. "Come on, we need to keep moving and put the past behind us."

How could I do that? Both my parents were dead. And here I was running from an unknown terror that was following us. And to crown it all here we were in a dark, tight tunnel. it was hard to breathe too. 

Brindle claw's breathe was coming out in short rasps. I wondered if we would ever get to the exit.  She looked behind her and sniffed the clammy tunnel air. I saw her eyes open wider than I had ever seen them before. "OHNO! Run,Run!!" she whispered. Then she and I both ran. I tripped over a rock and cut myself badly. i couldn't run anymore...

"Brindle claw help!"

She had run ahead of me. She gasped again and turned around. She picked me up by the scruff and ran faster than ever. The tunnel exit came into view and she kept running. It was a hard trip. She held onto me so tightly it hurt. She put me down and I ran with her, ignoring the pain in my cut leg.After about half an hour I noticed the sun's rays just peeking out behind the hills. Brindle claw then ran into an old cave that had been abandoned.

'We are safe for now.. I think.."she whispered urgently. "Now let me see that leg."

Besides being a beta wolf, she was also the medic. She carefully inspected the gash on my leg. She licked it trying to soothe the pain. I winced. She shook her head.

"This is worse than I thought. Stay right here, I'll be right back."

i didn't want her to leave me, even if she was just gone for 1 minute.

She came back though and I was very relived. She had in her mouth some assorted herb looking plants. She walked toward me and dropped them on the ground. Sorting through the mixture, she found a small, dull green leaf.

"Chew on this as much as you can and swallow it." She ordered.

I leaned foward and sniffed it. It smelled unpleasant and it tasted just as bad. i chocked it down, but only because she was watching. 

"That herb will soothe the pain and this will keep the cut from getting infected.' She nosed out a black looking vine and leaf cross, and proceeded to wrap it around the wound with her paws and nose. After she has finished the task, she lead me outside to a small brook outside the den. There she urged me to drink. i found some berries on a bush by the crick. I asked her if they were edible and they were. We dined on a few of the berries and drank some more water from the crick. 

"Get some rest." She urged me. "Our enemies cannot travel as fast by day."

"Why is that?" I asked her.

She didn't reply. She sighed and said

"Get some sleep little one. We'll need to run again tonight."

I realized I was exhausted. I drifted off. 

Chapter 2

The next thing I knew when I woke up was Brindle claw shaking me awake. The sun had gone down.

"Hunh? Brindle cla...??"

"Sssshhhh. Follow me quietly. Make one noise and it willl cost us both our lives."

I gulped.

She carefully made her way to the back of the cave. There was a small hole dug in the back leading to the outside of the cave near the crick.  

"Go through," she whispered.

I did. I went as carefully as I could. As soon as I was out, Brindle claw squeezed through behind me. She sniffed the air and beckoned me to follow her. She darted between the fallen leaves and twigs on the ground. I carefully followed her. We had not gone far when we heard a blood-chilling spine-tingling howl. We both froze. Neither of us could move. I started shivering uncontrollably. The howl sounded again. Brindle claw's fur bristled and she growled softly. 

"This isn't good. She whispered. "They are following our scent."

I wished she could tell me who "they" was.

The eerie howl echoed again through the forest. 

Brindle claw started to run at an alarming pace

"Follow me and don't worry about stealth! Run! Run!"

We crashed through the bushes and shrubs.

We ran and ran and ran...

I didn't think I could stop, the path we were crashing through went downhill;I tripped and started rolling. i was terrified. I could hear brindleclaw's scared yelps. I heard her scream.. I looked back. A brown body lay in a pool of blood.. 

"NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" I screamed!

At the sound of my cries, the 'things' that were chasing us looked right at me. I wanted to scream again. it was the demon from my dreams. The black wolf with blood red eyes...

They came for me.. Right behind me.. I couldn't run any more..I was done for..

I ran into some bushes and crawled into a log and out again.. I came to the edge of the cliff. the 'things' were right behind me..

I remembered my mom and dad.. slain..

Brindleclaw...slain

I had nothing left to live for. I closed took one last breath and hurled myself off the cliff....
